Good to know π I figured as much that is why I have never shared my tea π Imagine trying to replace the coffee with tea? Providence’s dancing cop says he was fired over protest
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) β Providence’s famous dancing cop said he was fired Tuesday from directing holiday traffic for organizing a protest last month against a Dunkin’ Donuts worker who wrote “#blacklivesmatter” on another police officer’s coffee cup in Rhode Island.
I forget why I ran across that, but while posting it here and not coming up with anything very funny as a caption, I started wondering if anyone was still maintaining a text based web browser. Turns out yes they are. It’s very funny to read this site without graphics or advertisements.
At the moment I am not receiving ad revenue, so if you want to use an ad blocker here I won’t be upset. I would love to receive ad revenue like SD does at the Tree, but I don’t have enough traffic to qualify (yet).
I was just fooling around with it. It would be such a pain to work with due to website designers and programmers not following conventions ignored 20 for years.
I renderer when IBM opened retail stores with showrooms. While standing around in a three piece suit waiting to talking to the manager about a job, I would exit them out of Lotus 123 and into the BASIC interpreter, then I would program them to fill the screens with “Hire him! He’s great!”. Never worked. The DEC store told me to stop in and even asked me to leave. π¦
When PC’s at home became “the thing,” DH insisted we must have one. “Why???, said I, they’re not worth a shiite at work and wth would I DO with one at home??? I don’t want to work at home…..”
The Mrs. doesn’t want me working at home either. She asked me today if I was going to be a man and get a real job. I’m like, ‘So you want me to stop what I’m doing and get a job at 7-11?’ She says, whatever gets you out of the house…..
My first home computer was supplied by my company, because I needed to access the IBM 38 (remember those, nyet?) computer via modem. By then, my home computer had a hard drive. Norton Utilities was the big deal. No Windows yet.
Also had a crt that was built in to the console – not separate. I had one go bad not long after I first started working with the old 38, didn’t have an alternate console set up, and tried to operate blind. Just called service and quit that nonsense after a bit.
I didn’t work with the System 38 for long – we moved to the first AS400 series (Silverlake). That was about 1987? My desktop was an AT&T, I think, but it didn’t have touchscreen. So glad we don’t have to use modems any more.
Isn’t that the model that came with all the memory already installed but you had to pay a huge fee for a tech to come in and flip a switch inside to use it?
“…. So glad we donβt have to use modems any more. “
Actually everyone with a mobile phone is using one without knowing it. It’s completely hidden from the user/owner. Same AT/Hayes command set as the dinosaurs used.
I guess the thing I hated about modems was the speed – or lack of – rather than the technology. The funniest thing I ever heard was a modem at my cousin’s house. He lived in the country and didn’t have touchtone service. The modem “dialed”.
No kidding?!? Wow! I have to think about how that worked. I seem to recall there was something about older switching stations, but I never ran into it myself.
I’m sure you could still do it (not that I could think of a reason). If one can still hook up an old rotary phone and dial out, there is no reason pulse mode on a modem wouldn’t work.
Remember when the automated messages for customer service would end with ‘…or if using a rotary phone, please stay on the line for the next available operator.’
Heh heh. If I had a choice in the matter, I’d add that to the voice mail greeting I currently have. Sigh. It would be deemed unprofessional and removed.
In my former job, we had something similar (or you may remain on the line, and someone will assist you) because the phone systems in some other countries are not compatible with ours, and the tones don’t always match, so they can’t use the automated attendant.
