Good morning! It’s time for coffee and whatever for a little breakfast. Maybe just an apple. I ain’t cooking breakfast today.

Good morning, Menagerie! I’m not feeling like cooking for a long time. I ache all over, and I feel like somebody beat me up. Dinner was delicious, though, and there are lots of leftovers, so there’s no ebelskivers for me today!
I told my DD about your diet and exercise plan, and how well you have done this year, and particularly about your success with walking. She offered to buy me a Fitbit for Christmas, but that I should choose which one, color, etc. Any suggestions?

I have read a lot about them. Years ago, when at Staples I got a great deal on their cheapest model, the zip. I thought I wanted one of the bands, especially the charge HR, which reads your pulse, good for when you really want to get your heart rate up. I am a member of a group on Facebook who share tips. People love them but the bands crack all the time, and many people get a rash under the band. Fitbit has excellent customer service and will replace the unit (it’s all one piece, band not replaceable) but it likely will happen again. Therefore, I still love my clip on zip. I would recommend either it or the Fitbit One, also a clip on. I lean toward the zip because you don’t recharge the battery in it, just replace it every 6-8 months.
Others read heart rate, if you climb floors you’ll want at least the One as the zip only counts steps, time, miles. Others record your sleep patterns. None of those appeal to me. Also, with any Fitbit you are going to set it up on your computer, and have a dashboard. It has an excellent food diary you can use if you choose, you can record additional exercise and it keeps up with your calorie burn vs intake if you log your food. I don’t usually log it, because when I am eating my usual stuff I know I can have almost as much as I want. It’s when I eat something not in my usual fare that I check it in the log to see exactly how much sugar and sodium is in it.
I finally had to replace my Fitbit last summer, and I was tempted to upgrade, but I chose the zip again. I bought a twelve dollar watch that monitors my heart rate (no chest strap, which I hate) from Groupon. It’s very accurate and no where near the cost of the more expensive Fitbit and other devices. It’s a Sketcher’s Go Walk.
I really like the friends and challenge groups in the app. You can find friends at your level and join daily, weekly, or weekend challenges if you want.
For more info the Fitbit Challenge Group on Facebook is excellent, and the Fitbit site is also good. It clearly shows the features of each device.
To make a decision this is what you need to decide. What do I want to measure? Steps, miles, time active only? Zip. Floors climbed and sleep? The One or one of the bands such as the Flex, Charge, or Charge HR. The Flex has no display. You read it on a smart phone. I don’t like that. Heart Rate? Charge HR. I believe all except the zip must be charged and the Charge HR frequently.
You can get nice pendants or bands for the flex or one, which gives them a jewelry look, and I kind of like that idea, but it didn’t overcome my desire for a display and no recharging.
Hope this helps you decide. I love mine and I have made some friends in the groups. Every day I am more active because I am measuring myself. I think it will become a favorite gift for you.

I am quietly taking notes of everything you said. I especially like the idea of sharing the experience with others in a FB group. Dieting is a miserable thing to do alone.

I simply don’t have it in me to diet anymore, and I wouldn’t keep weight off if I did. I had to find something that works without measuring food. I am keeping the calories at around 1400 – 1600 most days, with usually one treat day a week. I eat a combination of Paleo cooked foods with lots of raw fruits and vegetables. I try to stay away from sugar and limit salt and when I do those two things it really elimates cravings.
I usually walk a minimum of two hours a day, some days more. That alone helps burn calories, more so if you walk fast enough to get your heart rate up.
Basically I’ve concentrated on trying to find what works for me instead of trying to force myself to do what I hate and can’t maintain. 😀

I’m so danged short that I can’t go much above 900 calories a day if I expect to lose anything. 1500 is what I can do to just maintain my weight. My biggest problem is a love affair with sweets…..I just crave the stuff in just about every form. I really need to get out and walk for at least an hour a day. Back when I played tennis I never gave it a thought.
And you’re right. It’s got to be a diet that’s easy enough to become a way of life. If not….it just goes right back on.

One thing I have found out this year. You just a outs cannot eat enough vegetables and fruit to get over in calories. I make that the bulk of my meals. And smoothies often satisfy my sweet tooth. I like to have one piece of very dark chocolate at night too.

Here’s what’s bad. I’m cooking a turkey on the grill right now. I don’t cook the meat for the big dinner, so we don’t have leftovers. I wanted my brined turkey by golly, and I can use it for lunches next week. I think some of the menfolk are gonna raid the kitchen after the day’s shooting. But I told ’em last night I was busy with party prep for Conner so they gotta eat and leave. Ain’t I a nice mama”

Speaking of Michelle….why is it we only seem him appearing with the kidz as of late? When she stepped out to accept the Nat’l X-mas tree today, she said “Merry Christmas” like she was spittin’ nails too.

This is a grandma brag. My older grandson, high school sophomore, earned straight A’s for his first grading period. He is taking advanced placement classes, math and science, and I give him full credit for hard work (and credit to my DD, who keeps him on track). Also, he’s becoming a nicer person, which is a good thing because he is now about 2″ taller than I am, at 5’10”.

Great job to mom and son both. These years are so important. And wow, he’s becoming nicer when most teens are getting crabbier. Much to be excited about and proud of!
How is the younger one? Isn’t he the one who just had a birthday?

Milo is the younger one, and he turned 12 on Wednesday. We had a small party here for him.
ADD: Milo is a schmoozer. He will be a salesman, no matter what field he chooses.

James just got a big disappointment too. He was planning on going on the trip to Japan with his class next year, but there were so many applicants that he was cut from the list, while his two best friends made it. Jen said that his teacher more or less said (without saying it outright) that the other boys were given preference for what I would call “affirmative action” reasons.

I guess the selection process was a big deal. Each person wrote an application as to why they should be chosen, and they went through personal interviews.
