09.11.01: The towers are hit

As it happened. I think each of us remembers when they first realized what was happening. I was at work. When the second plane hit, my boss ran into my office and said, “It’s terrorism!”

It’s Doggityday!

Denise Corliss is pictured with her search dog Bretagne at Ground Zero in New York City in September 2001. It was their first deployment together.

In 2016, the last of the New York ground zero search dogs died at age 16 with her longtime handler and best friend by her side.

Photograph from September 11

By Wisława Szymborska
Translated By Clare Cavanagh

They jumped from the burning floors—
one, two, a few more,
higher, lower.

The photograph halted them in life,
and now keeps them
above the earth toward the earth.

Each is still complete,
with a particular face
and blood well hidden.

There’s enough time
for hair to come loose,
for keys and coins
to fall from pockets.

They’re still within the air’s reach,
within the compass of places
that have just now opened.

I can do only two things for them—
describe this flight
and not add a last line.

Melania Trump releases new video, asks why didn’t law enforcement arrest Thomas Matthew Crooks before assassination attempt

Former First Lady Melania Trump released a video on Tuesday criticizing law enforcement for not arresting gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks before he was able to open fire on her husband at his Butler, Pennsylvania rally in July.

“The attempt to end my husband’s life was a horrible, distressing experience. Now, the silence around it feels heavy,” Trump said. “I can’t help but wonder why didn’t law enforcement officials arrest the shooter before the speech. There is definitely more to this story and we need to uncover the truth.”

The video closed with a photo of Melania Trump’s upcoming memoir, Melania, which “invites readers into her world, offering an intimate portrait of a woman who has lived an extraordinary life. Melania includes stories and images never before shared with the public.”
