Day FORTY-FIVE of Presidential recovery.

Today is Ash Wednesday, the first day of the Lenten season. This day is observed with fasting, and the application of ashes on the forehead as a sign of repentance and mortality. Lent is the time before Easter when Christians prepare to commemorate Jesus’s Resurrection through prayer, penance, and fasting.

In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

Genesis 3:19

Lutnik: Zelenskyy is a troublemaker

This is the best explanation I have heard so far of what happened in the White House with Zelenskyy last Friday. Howard Lutnik explains that there was a 40 minute meeting BEFORE the cameras turned on and then another 45 or so minutes with the cameras rolling. Lutnik itemizes the demands that VZ was making – hundreds of millions in reparations from Russia, security guarantees, all of the land back to pre-war boundaries etc. It is obvious that he has no intention of compromising in any way in order to obtain a peace settlement.

It is clear that VZ is not truly desiring a peaceful end to the war in his country, and he hasn’t come to terms with the fact that there is no way that Ukraine can win this war unless some other country does the fighting for them. He doesn’t care that it would probably start WWIII if the USA and/or NATO puts troops on the ground to oppose Russia.

What can be done? Exactly what President Trump is doing: cut off support to Ukraine, at least temporarily, and let VZ experience the results. Not just money, but arms and material support.

Pączki Day (Detroit’s Mardi Gras) aka Fat Tuesday

Pączki are a tradition in Detroit and other midwestern cities, one that I indulged in for many years. I intended to just keep them as a memory, but I broke down and bought some. Lemon and Bavarian cream.

It’s Pączki Day, and in Detroit that means you should be sure to wear your stretchy pants or, as my old friend Denise used to say, your expando clothes!

Pączki, or Polish doughnuts, are eaten on Fat Thursday in Poland and Fat Tuesday in the United States. It’s the last splurge before Lent begins.

When I was still working, my employer provided huge boxes of them with every available filling next to the coffee machines in various areas of the building.  Considering that the company is owned by Italians, I thought that was darned nice of them. My personal favorites are custard-filled and lemon-filled, but they are all delicious (and fattening.) Yum!

Day FORTY-FOUR of Presidential recovery

Today is Shrove Tuesday, the day immediately preceding Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent in Western Christian churches.

Shrove, derived from shrive, refers to the confession of sins as a preparation for Lent. Although the day is still used for self-examination and introspection, Shrove Tuesday eventually acquired the character of a carnival or festival in many places and is often celebrated with parades.

Also known as Mardi Gras which is French for “Fat Tuesday”, it is the last day of consuming rich, fatty foods in preparation for the Christian fasting season of Lent, during which such foods are avoided.

Some traditions, such as the one in New Orleans, Louisiana, consider Mardi Gras to stretch the entire period from Twelfth Night to Ash Wednesday. Others treat the final three-day period before Ash Wednesday as the Mardi Gras.
