Pass the SAVE Act!

There is a great deal of disinformation being broadcast on social media. The best way to confront it is with the facts.

First, read the SAVE Act:

https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-bill/22/text

Its stated purpose is “To amend the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 to require proof of United States citizenship to register an individual to vote in elections for Federal office, and for other purposes.”

Important Facts:

  • The SAVE Act applies to REGISTRATION to vote in FEDERAL elections, not to voting, if you are already registered.
  • If you are registered to vote, you will need a photo ID that is accepted in your state.
  • If you have an ENHANCED ID (available in only five states at the moment), it is proof of citizenship. The REAL ID/Driver’s License is NOT proof of citizenship, because it is also issued to legal residents. Again, proof of citizenship is required to REGISTER to vote. I have an Enhanced ID. To obtain it, I presented my birth certificate and marriage license (name change), and was asked questions about info on my birth certificate.
  • If you really cannot obtain the documents to meet the registration requirement, the SAVE Act mandates that “each State shall establish a process under which an applicant who cannot provide documentary proof of United States citizenship under paragraph (1) may, if the applicant signs an attestation under penalty of perjury that the applicant is a citizen of the United States and eligible to vote in elections for Federal office, submit such other evidence to the appropriate State or local official demonstrating that the applicant is a citizen of the United States and such official shall make a determination as to whether the applicant has sufficiently established United States citizenship for purposes of registering to vote in elections for Federal office in the State.
  • If you need to obtain documents (birth certificate, marriage license, divorce decree) to prove citizenship, you can go here to find out where and how: https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/w2w/index.htm
  • Also, from the Act “in the case of a State which permits an individual to register to vote in an election for Federal office at a polling place on the day of the election and on any day when voting, including early voting, is permitted for the election, the applicant presents documentary proof of United States citizenship to the appropriate election official at the polling place not later than the date of the election.”
