Fermenting Apples, Preserving Spiced Apples for Nutrition

I have never done this, but Ruthann recommends apples as a delicious way to start fermenting. She lives in Iowa, and was brought up Old Mennonite. She and her husband have left the Mennonite faith, but still follow many of the Mennonite ways.

I like to watch Ruthann. I think she is a kind and accomplished woman. Hope you enjoy this one! PS: She also has instructional videos about making cheeses.

I think you would have to either pick fruit from your own apple trees, or buy them from a local orchard. Don’t they coat apples that we buy from the supermarket?

There is a thin coating of wax. Apples have a natural waxy coating (you wouldn’t believe how shiny our crab apples. straight off the tree, can buff up to!) that gets lost when the apples are washed after harvesting, so a new coating is added to keep the apples from drying out. It is a food grade wax and is so thin, only a drop or two can coat an entire apple.

I have had apple trees, so I know what you are saying about home grown. What I’m wondering, though, if the coating would interfere with the fermentation process.
