Mother’s Day Meme

A friend once told me that she knew her marriage was over when her husband gave her a vacuum cleaner for her birthday.

I told my husband when we first married never to buy me something to work with as a present. This mystified him, because he used to love getting really high quality tools for any gift occasion. I never bought them for him, just sent him to Home Depot with the money. He was too picky for me to be able to buy them right drill or even wrenches or screw drivers.

One year he got all excited about getting me a gun for Christmas. After dropping hints, and even pointedly showing no interest, I finally just told him I didn’t want a gun for Christmas. He was absolutely shocked.

He’s the greatest husband in the world, but most of the time he sucks at gift giving. On the other hand, when he gets it right he knocks it out of the park. My beloved black lab pup Riley was a gift for our 30th anniversary. This year’s Christmas present was great too, and he came up with it all on his own. Last year Wee picked it out for him!

While we were still engaged, I saw some commercial making a joke about clueless husbands buying their wives kitchen appliances.

I turned to him and told him, flat out, I would LOVE something like that as a gift. I like useful things. I don’t wear jewelry much at all. I don’t see the point of giving flowers that will just die and need to be thrown out (a potted plant or a tree, on the other hand…). But tools or appliances… these are things I absolutely would love as gifts!

Last year, for Mother’s Day, he got me a drill and driver set, a variety of tips for both, then an impact driver. I absolutely love them! They have saved me so much work!!!! Especially when building the cat isolation shelter.

My husband is the best. πŸ©·πŸ’•

Czar bought greeting cards en masse for most occasions, wrote clever things on them and left them all over the house for me. And bags of Fritos. He figured out early I preferred to pick out what I wanted. He was generous with gifts throughout the year, small, meaningful things he sometimes got right, sometimes wrong.

It took me longer to grasp I had no idea what to buy for him, and usually got it wrong.
