    Bobby belonged to John Gray, a night watchman in Edinburgh. After Gray died of tuberculosis on February 15, 1858, he was buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard cemetery. Bobby became known for spending the rest of his life guarding Gray’s grave.

    Attention to Bobby began when Edinburgh residents noticed the little terrier steadfastly keeping vigil at his owner’s grave. This was particularly noticeable to the cemetery caretaker, who initially tried to drive Bobby away. Despite his efforts, Bobby persisted and kept returning to the grave. Finally, the cemetery caretaker gave up and built Bobby a small shelter out of sacks between two gravestones to protect him from the weather.

    Bobby’s devotion soon attracted the interest of the local population and visitors to the cemetery. Every day at one o’clock in the afternoon, exactly at the time of the one o’clock shot, Bobby briefly left the grave to have a meal at a nearby cafe called Traill’s Temperance Coffee House. This regular routine attracted many spectators who admired Bobby and often brought him food.In 1867, a new law came into effect requiring all dogs in the city to be licensed or face euthanasia. The Lord Provost of Edinburgh, Sir William Chambers, paid for Bobby’s license and gave him a collar with a brass plaque reading: “Greyfriars Bobby from the Lord Provost 1867 licensed”. This collar is now on display in the Edinburgh Museum.

    Shortly before Bobby’s death in 1872, Lady Burdett-Coutts, a wealthy philanthropist and president of the RSPCA’s Ladies’ Committee, commissioned the sculptor William Brodie to create a bronze statue of Bobby. The statue was placed at the southern end of George IV Bridge near Greyfriars Kirkyard. It has since become a popular tourist attraction and a symbol of loyalty and loyalty.

    Bobby died on January 14, 1872 at the age of 16. He was buried near his owner’s grave, and his gravestone bears the inscription: “Greyfriars Bobby – died 14th January 1872 – aged 16 years – Let his loyalty and devotion be a lesson to us all.”
