NASA is geared up to cover the eclipse on its TV channel and online. Viewers around the world will be provided a wealth of images captured before, during, and after the eclipse by 11 spacecraft, at least three NASA aircraft, more than 50 high-altitude balloons, and the astronauts aboard the International Space Station – each offering a unique vantage point for the celestial event.

I’m honestly confused as to why this eclipse is such a big deal. I mean, yeah, it’s cool and all, but it’s no different than any others we’ve had over the decades, other than it’s path this year. Even the scientific monitoring is done every time, though of course, the technology has changed and improved. Then there’s all those declared states of emergency.I find myself wondering what we are being distracted from.

Just as big a deal was made over the eclipse in 2017. It’s a harmless event that lots of people enjoy.

The 24/7 media circus is creating and feeding itself. They have the power to control what we see and know, and they have an event where they can do both.
Some places are expecting loads of people more than they ever have had to manage.The ones around here (near Dallas) are saying on their TV interviews they expect 10x what usually shows up for their county event. Traffic will be a mess afterward since people will want to get outta there right now. Also, toilet facilities have to be provided. So it is a big deal for them, and Americans are used to all necessaries being provided.

According to Mrs. T, the mood in Kerrville, TX is very subdued. Substantial cloud cover predicted for the entire day and the expected crowds have not materialized as hoped/expected/predicted.

I need Weather or some astronomer type to explain why the path of the totality arcs from southwest to northeast. I get the west to east part due to rotation of the earth, but neither the sun nor the moon move across the sky on any day at an angle.

Re-Farmer,
I think part of the build-up is an attempt to bring some economic revitalization to the service economy, including small businesses.
It’s also, in some ways, a training event for local governments to assess the ability of various areas to respond to increased demands on infrastructure or to emergencies on a larger scale.
And it’s a way for the public to enjoy themselves, while doing both of the above.

Animal behavior – ducks got weirded out and took off, other birds and squirrels deadly quiet. My dum bass cat didn’t notice a thing… and yes, he was outside.

The cat stayed near me, but Tucker whined a bit. That could be because I kept getting up and going outside.

PS: He went outside with me when it was almost darkest, and it didn’t seem to bother him.

The sky had scattered but fast moving light clouds right up to the totality, when almost all cleared and we saw all the corona and the diamond ring.. Wind virtually disappeared , sky was greyed but not totally dark for about 2 minutes. Did not feel colder. We could see everything in the surrounding area but like dusk. Everyone was excited and happy ( ages 21-74).
