We certainly have our challenges in this Country since we’re being “led” by a bag of skin and his sidekick who can’t put more than two words together that actually go together in a sentence………….but we’re not as bad as Great Britian. Looks like they could be going for their 4th poobah just since Brandon took office. Maybe that should be Joey’s new motto.

On a different road to ruination, Nick Saban, the recently retired football coach at the University of Alabama has opined on the can of worms that college athletics has become. Whether you love him or hate him, I think he’s definitely right on this one. I think the NIL programs, where college athletes get “sponsorship” deals with alumni or other businesses is now driving the bus for most of these athletes and we will soon see something more akin to watching minor-league football on Saturdays as these guys put a little polish to their skills before signing for the big money at the next level. We are seeing the fruits of the “ME” generation.

Good day, Czarina. Love fresh pears but otherwise…meh! There must be something to celebrate Kansas for…a prize to anyone who can name five items…besides likely everyone wearing shoes.

        5. The people. Even as a kid, I knew that the South was known for her hospitality, yet I still have never met more salt of the Earth, kind, good people than Kansans.
        6. Bonus: Dodge City and the wonderful cattle history. Destination of many a northward cattle drive, an important and epic era of our history as a nation!

You win, Menagerie! In 1963, I visited my mother’s relatives in Kansas and was super excited to discover a female cousin’s hobby was going to farm and estate sales to purchase antique bureaus, desks, glass-doored cabinets, china, pottery. Her entire house plus full basement was filled with these delightful treasures.

Well, Lucille, there must be some beautiful stuff there. I inherited a wonderful old secretary which belonged to my grandparents. I still think the old pieces of furniture, which contain a curved glass fronted bookcase, along with a fold down desk that hides cubbyholes, is one of the neatest ideas ever!

When we moved I passed it on to one of my sons.

I once read someone took the phrase “Kansas is s flat as a pancake” and did an analysis of the terrain, discovering Kansas is FLATTER than a pancake.

Sure looks that way, until you walk it. My cousins and I used to laugh when we got together one week in the summers, our parents coming back to Kansas to visit our elderly grandparents and each other.

Our parents grew up on the old family farm and walked to the one room schoolhouse out on the plains, pretty far, actually from their farm, as it serves a far flung community.

Tales included ice skating to school, and of course, the usual “uphill both ways” banter.

When only two of my uncles were left, we started the Fall Walk. We went from the old farmhouse to the school, with my uncles, the oldest in his eighties, leading.

It was brutal. Starting by crossing a creek, one we crossed several more times to get there. And in Kansas, water cuts huge, deep gashes in the land when it floods. We cousins were looking for a foot bridge when my uncle, came in hand, went down about an 8-10’ bank, and we see him bob up the other side a minute later.

The fields disguise some pretty rough terrain, and you never know when you’re going to walk up on a big cut in the ground.

We shut up about the school walks, but we kept it up while they were able. Took us three to four hours, but the uncles said it was usually under an hour, except in the most severe weather, when they were kids. And they really did ice skate it in the winter.
