Good day, weather! Likely most of us had ancestors from small towns. They emigrated to the U.S. to start afresh. Now many descendants wish that their families had maintained ties to relatives who stayed behind. We just might need somewhere else to live if things really go full tyrannical in North America.

Mornin’ all ya’all! Travel day. In Orlando, heading for Atlanta. Then to Gulfport. Missed two days of bad rain and storms in NO, but looks like it’ll be gone by the time I get home.

I never knew anybody who lived in Russia, but I did work with a couple who escaped from Bulgaria. I’ll never forget the stories they told. People who lived under such regimes recognize the evils.

Good day, Stella! In the late 70s there was an accountant in our offices who had emigrated from the USSR in one of the releases the Soviets allowed for Jews. She and her family could choose either Israel or the U.S. They chose the U.S. because they were not religious and felt no kinship to Israel. We gave her an office party the day she became an American citizen.

Hi Lucille! I worked for an Italian-based company for 43 years. I worked with many Italians, as well as Yugoslavs and Bulgarians, and some Germans. The Yugoslavs (some from Serbia, and some from Istria) were very interesting. It was more Socialist than Communist at the time in most of the country. I got the impression that it made a lot of citizens criminals as they hid earnings etc. from the government. Also, since private property was not totally private property, people didn’t put as much into their land as they might otherwise.

One of the things that surprised my co-worker about America and Americans was that people generally did not slack off and do as little as they could get away with on the job. Giving an honest day’s labor was a matter of pride for those Americans she observed. Apparently her former countrymen weren’t as diligent.
