On June 29, 2003, Katharine Hepburn—a four-time Academy Award winner for Best Actress and one of the greatest screen legends of Hollywood’s golden era—dies of natural causes at the age of 96, at her home in Old Saybrook, Connecticut.

Her career as a Hollywood leading lady spanned over six decades. She was known for her headstrong independence, spirited personality, and outspokenness, cultivating a screen persona that matched this public image, and regularly playing strong-willed, sophisticated women.

Ms. Hepburn earned four Academy Awards for Best Actress—a record for any performer. The first was Morning Glory in 1934, then in 1968 for Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner, 1969 for The Lion In Winter, and 1982 for On Golden Pond.

Katy and John Wayne were cut from the same mold! Glad I lived to see a few of the films they starred in! To me, that was when the boob tube and movies were prime!

Have a lovely day, Stellars! It’s a Thursday visit to islands off the California Central Coast, though a lot of citizens who live in Los Angeles County would consider the Channel Islands as part of southern California.

Although there are other “channel” islands elsewhere in the archipelago such as Catalina, in 1980 the National Park Service designated Anacapa Island, Santa Cruz Island, Santa Rosa Island, San Miguel Island and Santa Barbara Island as the “Channel Islands National Park.” This chain is in the Santa Barbara Channel near Ventura (aka San Buenaventura).

Santa Cruz…the largest island in California at 96 sq.mi., is 76% owned by The Nature Conservancy which manages it in collaboration with the NPS which owns 24%.  Along with the other Channel Islands, it’s pretty much a BYO-everything adventure.

Santa Barbara, beautiful from this angle and in this fortunate timing.

      The rest of the story….

San Miguel requires a special permit to visit.

The original surfers reside on San Miguel.

      Establishing Channel Islands National Park….
“In order to protect the nationally significant natural, scenic, wildlife, marine, ecological, archeological, cultural, and scientific values of the Channel Islands in the State of California……there is hereby established the Channel Islands National Park. – Public Law 96-199, signed March 5, 1980”

Is this not where the UFO’s were filmed entering the water? Runs in my mind it was the Catalina area? If memory serves me right, it also was in the Atlantic in the area of Nova Scotia where UFO’s entered the water. Pretty quiet since then, LOL!

Grew up in Cali and only visited Catalina!
      Remembering this tragic event:
On Labor Day weekend 2019, the ‘Conception’ left Santa Barbara, California, for a diving trip to the Channel Islands. Six months later, authorities are still trying to determine how what should have been a routine excursion became one of the deadliest maritime disasters in U.S. history.

Good day, weather! I never visited the Channel Islands either, but did visit Catalina. It was always a joy to discover a fogless day revealing the outline of Catalina as seen from my Santa Monica office windows.

Re the 2019 Conception disaster, when reading at the time that the ship had only one exit from below, it seemed to me the vessel with full crew and passengers aboard was quite unsafe. Thirty-eight people are a lot to cope with when the inevitable panic sets in. The key seems to be that the fire had such a head start that the outcome was inescapable. Finding out why it was not discovered in a timely manner is essential. Negligence toward the safety rules by owner and crew was a huge factor in the tragedy.

Supreme Court Strikes Down Affirmative Action in College Admissions
    By Spencer Brown – June 29, 2023 10:23 AM

The United States Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that admissions systems which factor race into decisions — specifically those used at Harvard and the University of North Carolina in this case — violate the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution.

Afternoon, All. Going for dinner with my kids. I had trouble sleeping last night and finally nodded off and slept in late. It is going to be a warm day and I think it is possible that my air conditioner is going to run today. It is already 74* inside. It hasn’t been that high since the end of last summer.

Here’s hoping you all have a great day.

The Rat mayor of NO has offended a lot of people, but not enough to get her a recall election. Big scandal was staying in a city owned apartment in the FQ with her body guard for many hours at a time, and of course charging the city for the officer’s time. (Officer’s wife has filed for divorce…)

She also puts pressure on various people to get personnel where she wants them. The current scandal is the director of the 911 Center, whom she appointed after having the prior, competent, director ousted. New guy has had three bad late or no-show 911 call errors recently, spent money to have the department name embroidered on their chairs, and now was in a VERY problematic accident in a city owned car then apparently changed to dept. policies to favor his not reporting it. City Council wants him ousted, but mayor (social worker by profession) said they “must give him time to heal mentally, physically and emotionally” (!!!??) so to let him stay in the position until his resignation date in Sept.

Also seems there is no second in command to move up to run the dept. if he goes. I’m sure she has someone in mind.

    Have you ever?
