    Mornin’ everyone. Happy Fourth of July.

    I just got up a little while ago. My neighbor next door had a party last night, with VERY loud music and fireworks. I decided at the beginning I was not going to call security and have them shut down. So, I turned up my TV full blast, put on my earphones and ignored them as much as possible. It was rather jarring when they set off fireworks, which are not supposed to be used here in the apt complex at all. I thought a bomb had been dropped on us. These were not the little ones that people usually set off. They were finally shut down about 2:00 AM. It is supposed to be quiet after 11:00 PM.

    I was just thinking about the 4th of July 1967. I was in Vietnam and the base commander really wanted to have a celebration so he got in touch with the EOD unit. Now when you give an EOD unit an order to schedule some things being blown up for fun they don’t disappoint you, and in this case they didn’t.

    We’d picked up beer and booze and gathered by the flightline early waiting for the show. We were pretty happy by the time the show started…it began sloooooowly with some booms on the otherb side of the runway…then it got interesting. The booms got bigger and bigger, there were more of them and then the incendiaries kicked in, it was as if they’d saved all of the stuff they were supposed to blow just for this. There were regular explosions, white phosphorus, napalm and (I swear) a few 250-pound bombs, we were well over a mile away and those biggies blew our hair backwards. It went on and on and by the time it was over just about everyone was blasted sober.

    I’ve been to some big commercial shows and while they’re organized and enjoyable nothing will ever compare to that improvised 4th show. RIP Sal Coniglio.
