JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu easily won a vote to keep the Likud party helm, the party said on Friday, in a boost ahead of what is likely to be a hard-fought general election in March.
Netanyahu won 72.5% of votes in Thursday’s party ballot, against 27.5% for challenger Gideon Saar, who conceded, tweeting that he would now back the incumbent “for the sake of a Likud victory in the (general) election”.
Netanyahu declared victory in a speech at Likud’s campaign headquarters near Tel Aviv, telling supporters: “The future is in our hands”.
“The sweeping decision in the primaries was a major expression of confidence in my path, in our path,” Netanyahu said, adding: “Now is the time to bring a sweeping victory to Likud and the right in the elections.”

Good news.
I hope he can overcome the “Witch hunt” he faces… and… it’s 3rd time LUCKY for some sort of majority coming out of an Israeli election. (March 2)
I think the difficulties in getting a stable result in past 2 Israeli elections should give people reason to PAUSE when they call for a “Proportional” election system. Even a large party ends up having to form “coalitions” with small parties, and that can result in appeasing the small party and so giving them a DIS-PROPORTIONAL influence on government policy. A lot of people in UK are currently calling for “Proportional Representation”, for one reason so that a Party like Nigel Farage’s “Brexit” Party might get at least a few MPs and have some influence in Parliament.
In NZ we had referendums and ended up opting for a Proportional system (MMP) (Mixed Member Proportional). IMHO is has not worked out too well. There was a second referendum to go back to FFP (first past the post) but that failed.
Here is the example of NZ’s last election…
