    I was waiting in one of those interminable lines in the grocery store and watching a child in the cart ahead of me. She couldn’t have been more than 3 years old but she had a real cell phone – possibly Mom’s – and was working the dickens outta it. i started working with computers in ’65 when the one we had was a big yellow box in the middle of the floor that was ‘programmed’ through a bank of toggle switches and lights.

    We took a computer to Vietnam in ’67 – it used drum storage and had less memory capacity than my cell phone does now. When I was working an NSA node in 79-80 we had a computer that used 8-level tape, punch cards, tape drives, disc-packs and a printer that had about 160 print bars on it. One night we were told to take two days off, a new system was being installed, and when we came in it had been replaced by an IBM desktop system that took up about 1/10th of the space the old one did.

    We moved to IBM PCs with the original DOS (and WOW, 20 meg hard drives!) in the early 80s and it was just ZOOM from then on. Now I have a 2008ish desktop for my work station (because it’s not connected to the internet and is ‘familiar’, a laptop for regular connected stuff and Czarina has an iPad. Our GGS frequently chides me for not using this button or that function – I chide back with “You wanna keep your butt in the will?”.

    I say that because I just received a package in the mail today – a bottle of exotic Asian sriracha with no English on the label – straight from Indonesia. I ordered it on my laptop after a search, more easier than haunting the big-box Asian stores in NOLA. Only took five days to get here and I could restrain my enthusiasm that much and now I know how long it takes to get here so I can plan.

    Back in the dimly remembered dark ages (you remember, when you had local and toll calls and sometimes you paid for both) you were sorta stuck with what local groceries had, you had to drive all over to find something ‘exotic’. Now without leaving my recliner I can conjure up real foreign foods and order them from real foreign grocers, even order custom kielbasa from maker in Chicago and have it overnighted. Sorta makes me sa bit sad I’ll check out before I get to see how much farther this will go.

      Sriracha is de-vine, but ALAS I’m not allowed it anymore. Half my pantry is full of things the doc says I have to give up…yeah, mmmhuh, like who wants to live forever!

        True dat. This sriracha is the very thin variety from fermented peppers and is redolent of garlic (U-Know-Who says ‘reeks’). It’s heavily a ‘nose’ product.

        I’m thinking of making my own next year from sweet red Italian peppers with a touch of heat from the red TAM jalapenos. It’ll be more for taste than hot. We’ll see how things work out.

        I finally saw Bohemian Rhapsody. What a horrible movie. It is quite a feet to fail at making a movie with such incredible potential in a character like Freddie Mercury.

        I had to close my eyes to enjoy the music because the actor who played Freddie looked slightly grotesque to me.

      Something I do miss about Chicago is the abundance of everything at your fingertips.

      China Town was dandy with all its markets and restaurants, we ordered 24 different things at the restaurant and everyone enjoyed the food. Tea was a green tea, I asked for gun smoke and they obliged. I can’t even begin to name all of the dishes we had…

      The computer is so easy from argon oil to tea to Zotz to books and on and on..

      I live in a relatively small city (around 60,000 folks) I can drive to Milwaukee and get just about anything I want, but sometimes it’s nice to just push a few buttons and have stuff magically appear on the doorstep.

        But now, I get aggravated when it doesn’t show up quickly! Ordered some LLBean shirts on the internet last Friday, info stated they would be here Monday. Still not here Tuesday. Used to be satisfied for it to take a couple of weeks to order by mail then wait for some kind of USPS shipping. 🙃

        I find that Amazon and the ability to dig around and find sources for my foreign cooking ingredients is amazing. I couldn’t find real Sicilian sardines and anchovies in NOLA before Katrina, now I have to decide which ones I’ll try. Only thing I can’t get is alcohol on line Mississippi’s still one of those states that has the limited booze industry by the throat.

    Over the weekend I watched Mr. Sardonicus. It is a B Horror movie. I don’t think it will appeal to everybody, but I found it very interesting and entertaining. I don’t like the new slasher, chase somebody around the house movies. This is about a man whose face becomes distorted in a horrible way and he wants to make a doctor fix it. I think it is a good movie for the Halloween season.

      My mother didn’t want us kids to watch horror movies, so they were a special treat when we got old enough that we wouldn’t end up scared in my parents’ bed! When I was in college in Tampa in the 70’s the late Friday night movie was my favorite, all the cheezy effects, women screaming ineffectively, monsters only seen in the shadows….

        Same here. Only we were not allowed in my parents’ bed, ever. My mother would just say, “Quit being scared and go to sleep.” But, when I was a little older and would watch the old Frankenstein or some other horror movie, the screen was so snowy, I really couldn’t see much. LOL I think that is why I like them now. But I don’t like slasher movies……….you know, like Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Still don’t want to see that one.

    Stopped at my Cosmic Punishment Mickey-D’s with my GGS on Sunday, it’s his favorite dining spot.

    As usual there were problems with the orders, mine was for six mechanically molded unidentifiable chicken parts and I only received 4. Now the serving box had ‘4’ printed on it, my receipt had ‘6’ printed on it and it took two frontend people and a manager whose voice was still changing to go into conference and determine that yes, there was an error.

    Instead of just grabbing me two and slamming them into the box we ended up waiting 10 minutes while they threw my ‘4’ into the trash and cooked ‘6’ new. I tried to explain that room temp with a chicken-squeezings was no worse than hot but their deductive abilities were so strained by the counting issue it fell on dead ears.

    I returned to the car where GGS had finished his burger and fries and found they given me a free small fries…room temp. They matched my large fries that were still in the car and the half of a bag of fries GGS hadn’t eaten as they were too cold. Neither of us wanted to go back and do the fry issue so we took off.

    Finally getting to the denouement. We stuffed the cold fries into a bag and put them in the back seat where I forgot about them until I got home. When I cleaned out the car – there they were: at least 4 hour old cold, dead Mickey-D’s fries. Well the garden’s down for the season and we throw our kitchen compostables out there to rot in so I thought “Why not the fries?”. I made a nice scattered field of them and left them to compost.

    About an hour later I came out (it was dark) with a bowl of compost to toss out and there were a dozen possum eyes staring back at me – the carrion eaters were scavenging up the fries like mad, even arguing over them. So if anyone asks you who eats Mickey-D’s fries you can now say possums who’ll pass up carrion and compost for them.

    The old dog’s been on the SAMe and curcumin for a few weeks now and the change is obvious. She’s still on the rimadyl, don’t want to take her off until the vet can do some blood tests to see what her inflammation markers are on and then off. She’s noticeably more active and engaged and moves more easily.

    I’m finding that with the curcumin I have less pain and stiffness and aggravations to arthritic sites doesn’t hurt as much, I recover more quickly and can go longer before I need I have to take a pain reliever. Not scientific but I ordered it again – it’s working for me and Daisy.
