If any of y’all have an older dog with hip problems/arthritis, I’m trying out a new med on Daisy, the ancient and slightly fluffy Border Collie mix. It’s a curcumin extract, about the same thing I’m taking for mine.

So far she’s eating the tabs right out of my hand (then again she eats anything), there’s bo stomach problems (so far), it’s not really expensive ($22/30 days) and seems to work. As she’s over 80#s she gets 4 tabs a day but smaller dogs take proportionately less and the price drops.

The Rimadyl she’s also on can have side effects requiring us to have her get blood tests about every 6 months and she can develop a tolerance to it. It’s also quite expensive.

I got onto curcumin after reading tests conducted on the NIH site. It seems to not only reduce inflammation, and thereby the pain from OA, but doesn’t have the side effects of the pharma OA stuff, or ever the OTC stuff they pawn off on you. Also, in testing it on diabetics, they’ve found it has a protective effect on capillaries, a major problem for diabetics and I’m hoping it will have the same effect on Daisy.

She’s getting into the ‘ancient’ range now and whatever we can do to keep her healthy is worth it, she’s been a great friend, companion and alpha dog.
