Aerial view of faulted road on the China Lake NAWS base. Total measured right-lateral offset of about 6.5 feet and approx 3 feet vertical. Large offset at bottom of pic is ~5 feet. This rupture was caused by the M7.1 earthquake on 7/5.

Friend’s comment:
Note the offset alignment from the Ridgecrest quakes. This is on one of the base roads and a little closer to the epicenters than Ridgecrest proper. Rather substantial offsets. Imagine the energy expended in doing this.

Great shot! That’s definitely a lateral and not a vertical.
I may have mentioned it before, but in the 1971 southern California earthquake I’m sure it was a vertical (I’ve never read one way or another). My evidence…I had a tall decorative glass vase (at least 2 feet high) which had a lid that went down into the vase about 2 inches. The lid ended up across the room, while the vase remained standing on my bedroom dresser, virtually unmoved. So the quake hit like a hand slapping the underside of an object, making objects go up into the air. Why just the lid flew up and off, I haven’t a clue. Nothing else in the apartment was broken except a small knick-knack which fell off a shelf.
