General Discussion, Monday, July 1, 2019

Today is the last day of the first half of the year. It is also Canada day.

Detroit, MI and Windsor, Ontario have a joint celebration this time of year to commemorate the Canadian and American holidays of July 1 and July 4; it is called the International Freedom Festival. From Wikipedia:

The highlight of both festivals is the fireworks display in celebration of the United States’ Independence Day and Canada’s Canada Day. It is one of the largest and most spectacular firework displays in North America, lighting up the sky over Windsor and Detroit. This annual spectacle draws more than 1,000,000 to the Windsor and Detroit river fronts.

The fireworks are launched from three barges anchored in the Detroit River, and took place last Monday, June 24. Here they are.

The current fireworks sponsor is Ford Motor Co.

Try this one: the first person says “I’m driving to (where you are going) and Im bringing an (item which starts with A)”. Next person says, “I’m driving to (where you are going) and I’m bringing an (item first person said starting with A), and a (item starting with B). Each person has to say the phrase and all the prior items then add one in alphabetical order.

I also like “My father owns a grocery store and in it he sells something that starts with (alphabet letter, or animal, veggie or mineral)”. Sort of like 21 questions, but with no limits.

You never can tell about next door. I was sitting down watching some pundits talk about the last Rat Pack of candidates telling us what’s wrong about America and I flashed back to the few minutes of it I watched before I ran out of Tums. I just got POd and scrawled off this little piece, it was done from concept to ‘post’ in about 5 minutes. I wasn’t looking for applause, just venting:

It’s a small thing but as I was watching the last Rat Pack whineathon…just a few minutes, my stomach and common sense brain-part can’t take much more, I watched the candidates complain about America.

I’m in deep Mississippi and I just got on my cell to order a couple of pizzas for my son from his local independent pizza parlor…in Denver. I can order pizzas over 1300 miles away. Now that doesn’t move most folks, we’ve become used to this, but in how many countries can you do this? I can have a x-ray done in my local small town hospital and have it read by an oncall radiologist in Australia, all in minutes. We can get medical visits, buy almost anything and have access to volumes of information that even 20 years ago was unavailable. All on the internet invented by America (Sorry, Al) with a galaxy of applications all invented by Americans.

We have an existence envied by most of the world, we’ve flooded the world with things that have made life immeasurably better for much of the world and the best the Democrats can do is complain about how horrible we all are. Screw ’em all, bring on the cultural civil war.

So far it has 35 likes and they’re still popping up. I post something I researched and footnoted on, let’s say, a Mideast issue and I get 2 ‘likes’ and a ‘your paragraphs are too long’.

Our country is extraordinary, πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ , in spite of the miscreant politicians who have been trying to destroy it for far too long. They are trying to remake it into a Muslim like repressive nation where celebrities and politicians are the Imams, liberalism is the religion, child sacrifice through abortion is their holy mass and depravity is their Allah.

Screw ’em all, bring on the cultural civil war.

      Amen

There are still enough of us to stop them. They can’t have my country.

    Ten A Time To TalkNap

    By Robert Frost

When a friend calls to me from the road
And slows his horse to a meaning walk,
I don’t stand still and look around
On all the hills I haven’t hoed,
And shout from where I am, ‘What is it?’
No, not as there is a time to talk.
I thrust my hoe in the mellow ground,
Blade-end up and five feet tall,
And plod: I go up to the stone wall
    For a friendly visit.

Yes. My friend has the Med. Power of Att. for her other friend. Let me say, not as a criticism, but to help understand, this woman is a total liar and you never know when or if you are getting the truthful answer. Anyway, she is in diapers, won’t change them, has somebody else to do it. She says she can’t walk and never gets out of bed. Her paid caregiver is having a nervous breakdown over the whole situation. The woman smokes and says she can’t breathes………………..but keeps on smoking. Won’t leave the bed even to eat. Won’t sit up to eat. Ended up in the hospital over the weekend for breathing problems but came home yesterday. Who knows how she got out. She has left twice before without being legally released. She doesn’t bathe or even eat unless somebody comes to make her. Also, she makes doctors appts. and then says she is sick and doesn’t go. When they talk to her she can answer the questions seemingly well enough, but my friend thinks she needs to be in a home because she lies to them. Any suggestions about how she can go about helping her?

If problem patient has a disability your friend can contact adult protective services for help not just for problem patient, but to make sure she herself is covered from blame. If problem patient has asked your friend to make medical decisions your friend should have a copy of the signed document to know the extent of the decision making. Most just say the responsibility comes into play when the patient is unable to make medical decisions, like comatose or due to a medical cause like encephalopathy, but a decision about a medical procedure is needed right away. It could also be to make an end of life decision. If problem patient is cognitively able to make reasonable decisions, understand consequences, etc., the power of attorney does not come into play, and the doctors must have the patient make the choices. Even if the patient is smoking, missing appointments, not bathing etc. A competent person can decide to name people to help and can change them at any time. Someone who is already incompetent will have to have a lawyer and go before a judge.

Most POAs are limited to one area such as medical, but for people who are truly incapicated like mentally ill, retarded or severly brain damaged, they can be for other areas. Most do not include legal, because of the problem person hurts someone, the peson named to have POA would bear the responsibility.

Friend may want to withdraw if she is uncomfortable with the situation. Contact the problem patient’s hospital social work dept.

“Contact the hospitals social work dept.” Now, I think that will help a lot, too. My real concern is that it is really making my friend almost ill. She shouldn’t have this on her shoulders.

Also, friend must remember that we cannot save everyone, people are autonomous and can make their own decisions unless legally deemed incompetent, and some people make decisions we think are terrible but they are just human. Even people who are mentally ill and living under bridges on handouts and in grave danger from other mentally ill people can legally decide to live that way.

Well, now, you definitely have the crux of the problem. This is exactly what is going on. My friend is too compassionate. She took on the Med and Financial Power, and it was all drawn up and legal years ago, because she knows this woman doesn’t have anyone else. The woman’s own daughter won’t have anything to do with her. She has two cousins who hate her guts. But, what you just said is what I have tried to tell her. “Mentally ill and living under bridges” fits, in my mind. πŸ™„ I think you answered my questions. Thank you. The real danger in the situation is that the woman has a lot of money. She just hired the person who took care of her mother before she died (and did a piss-poor job of it) and who will probably manage to get most of the money that she could use to take care of herself. But, there really isnt anything to be done.
