        The building with the arches is the Presbytere and flanks the St Louis Cathedral on the back side of Jackson Square. On the other side of the Cathedral is the Cabildo, a twin of the Presbytere.

        The red brick building with the balcony was the Chart House restaurant for many years, gone now. The building on the right of the old Chart House is one of the Pontalba apartment buildings which also has a twin directly across the square.

        One the first floor of the Pontalba you ‘;see’ used to be the la Madeleine cafe and bakery. It used to have wood-fired ovens and made the most fantastic assortment of French breads and pastries. We’d go in and have a cafe au lait and some evil sandwich or sweet or just plain bread and spread. That’s gone too, moved uptown to where the bike riders live, no more wood-fired ovens but still some good stuff.

      I like the details like the huge King Cotton sign in one picture, and in another if you look at the traffic light post there is some kind of head at the top, one like you see on folk art jugs. Maybe voodoo? Who knows, but it sure is cool.

      A lot of these pix were completely recognizable right up to Katrina, that’s what changed everything.

      When these pix were taken the Quarter was still largely a residential area with some tourist spots. The French Market in the Quarter was still a large open air grocery store supplying the needs of the residents, now it’s mostly tourist trap.

      I recognized a house on the edge of Washington Park at the ‘east’ end of the Quarter that Czarina and I ate in about 25 years ago when it was a restaurant (Spanish, I believe) – it looked the same then as it did in the picture and the same as it did recently when we went by – though it’s no longer a Spanish restaurant.

      The first pic with the police motorcycle’s lined up is in back of the St Louis Cathedral. I’m betting it’s the yearly spring special mass in the Cathedral held for police, firemen and other 1st responders.

    I like the daffodils. I was just discussing ours here – gone now – and how as a kid in early elementary school the teachers would bring them in and set the flowers in a vase with diluted ink or food coloring. The flower would pick up the dye as it took in the water and the veins in the flower would stand out in a different color. Not much now but it impressed us then.

      Good morning, Nyet! I’ve already had breakfast, topped off with 100% whole grain Sun Chips from Frito-Lay. So I’ll have the delicious plateful of goodies for lunch with a nice cup of sweet coffee and a donut before I head over to the Florida coast…

    Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.

    Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
