    Outside-outside cat (AKA ‘Outside Mickey’ to differentiate him from ‘Inside Mickey’) is in the vets today for cystitis. They’ll operate today and he should be home early in the week. He was a walk-up cat who moved right in and started racking up vet bills right off the bat.

    When I had an older male cat, the vet told me that chronic UTIs (a.k.a. cystitis) are a common problem in older male cats. In females the urethra (the tube from the bladder to the outside) is short and straight; in male cats it is long and serpentine, which easily leads to infections. He jokingly referred to the surgical solution as “a sex-change operation” (this was long before the era of transgender everything) because the procedure consisted of giving the male cat a short, straight urethra. He said it usually works very well.
