Written by a snow bird.

Florida is the sunshine state.
When Fall comes around, we can hardly wait
To walk the beaches and bathe in its rays.
It tans and warms for days and days.

Now in every life a times comes round
That the sun doesn’t shine. You should see the frowns!
They walk around with a pout and a glare;
If you mention the good days, they only stare.

They pile on the coats and cover their knees,
Forgetting that back home it’s ten degrees,
With snow piled up and a frosty breeze.

So smile Mr. Sun in the sunshine state,
And bring out grins, banish the hate.
The skin must be tanned by early Spring,
To take up back home to the land of lakes,
Where the sun will shine when it darn well pleases,
And happy we are if we escape the freezes.

      We had a number of dogs reunited with their owners years after Katrina and they all get ‘Awwwwws’ when the stories hit the news.

        microchip microchip microchip….and keep your registry phone number updated if you get displaced or move…..if you love your pet, keep it safe and identifiable….rescue folks will do anything possible to get these lovies back to their homes…..make it work for them and the babies.

          Yes yes yes but until recently verts made the chips so expensive that a lot of folks just couldn’t afford them. The price of the chip and the office visit would cause a lot of people to balk bur as private groups and humane societies drove the prices down thru non-profit sales.
          Also, it’s generally forgotten that those who for various reasons couldn’t drive out and had to be evacuated by the government were forced to dump/abandon their pets at their pickup points or were refused evacuation. There were no humane society services available anywhere in the area and it was about two months before outside services could come in and pick up what abandoned pets they could.

      Hi Lucille 🙂 I went to buy the dvd’s of the 2 versions of Nero Wolfe, but if I remember right there were problems with both – or they were discontinued – or just ridiculously expensive [1] Do you have a copy of either version? Are they OK?

      [1] I wanted a copy of The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh, but it’s hundreds of dollars because Disney owns it, and will not re-issue it!

        I watched whatever was available on YouTube. I’ve never owned any of the dvds.

        The actor playing Wolfe in this version was a Canadian actor, now deceased. Absolutely perfect for the part. Timothy Hutton was very good, too. It’s an ensemble cast with the various actors playing different roles each episode, showing the versatility of the cast.

    Valentine’s Day is coming up so here’s The Kiss (Lovers) by the Austrian Symbolist painter Gustav Klimt painted between 1907 and 1908.It is the highpoint of his “Golden Period”, when he painted a number of works in a similar gilded style. A perfect square, the canvas depicts a couple embracing, their bodies entwined in elaborate robes.

      Had no idea what an Oxford comma was, but seem to remember way back when learning my punctuation in grade school, that the last comma was not supposed to be there, and in fact would be marked down on tests, homework and reports.
      Rule works for the last sentence above, and have since repeatedly gone back and deleted the last comma. In all cases.
      I stand corrected. Defend away!

        Throughout the endless self-editing required to get my farm narrative published in 2013, I used the Chicago Book of Style to attempt to impose consistency on my way of writing. Having written something in excess of 30,000 words when my older brother first read it, I was chagrined to have him come back to me with only one gentle and monotone criticism (the way older brothers talk when they don’t want to hurt your feelings but feel compelled to say something), “Well, the only consistent problem I see is that you’ve left out the comma in every list of three or more – you might want to make the effort to go through and put that comma back in.”

        Hmmm. All-righty then. I never told him I left it out on purpose. Just figured I must have mislaid an important part of my training from young years. So I went and put a comma in everywhere.

        It’s certainly never been anything I would defend, either way. Not worth arguing over, but I guess I’m glad to see it’s a thing. Reminds me I wasn’t completely off my noodle when I did not use it initially.

        There is another more egregious issue in my book, as far as I’m concerned. There is a place where, because of physical typo, I completely provided the wrong end-date for the dust bowl yeas. I nearly croaked when I discovered that about 2 years ago. I need to locate the page number for that and go to the Amazon books section where I would be able to make a public post, acknowledge myself to be the goofy amateur author who screwed up so badly. The only way I could have had West Bow Press do professional editing would have been to provide them with $3,000 cash. Not having three of the crumbs of which Nancy Pelosi speaks, I did not purchase that service. Grr.

      This is how the oxford comma was explained to me:
      For breakfast I had coffee, cereal and fruit. No comma = The fruit is in the cereal.

      For breakfast I had coffee, cereal, and fruit. With the oxford comma = The fruit is separate from the cereal.

      There are a lot of funnier explanations on the web if you search for them

      I’ve never heard of the “Oxford” comma. Perhaps teachers in the California countryside didn’t give a name to that wee bit of punctuation. We were always taught to use that “extra” comma. That’s usually the punctuation I used until later in life when I discovered that rule had changed. So I do both depending on how I feel that day–old fashioned or modern. LOL!

      Re the lawsuit, how has every other business in Maine interpreted this comma conflict? Personally, lawsuits for this kind of thing are objectionable if a company acted in good faith in interpreting state law. Such matters should go to arbitration. Whatever is decided there should be the definitive interpretation but no retroactive payments should be authorized (BTW, this sentence holds another punctuation change example. When I was in school, there would have been a comma after the word “Interpretation”).

      And what’s with an employee not being pro-active in checking out what rules govern employment? I always questioned Human Resources departments as to my rights if they didn’t automatically give me an employee handbook.

          It really does make a difference, and it’s simple: If you want the last 2 things put together then leave out the comma, but if you want them separate, then put the comma in.

          I’m terrible at grammar. My 1st year of college we had to memorize Harbrace’s College Handbook section by section. Each week we had to write a 3-5 page composition. Each mistake was a GRADE off. I worked my tail off in that class! What’s sad now is that I went back to buy a Harbrace’s recently and it is so dumbed down it was depressing. Also there is in each chapter is a section for Spanish speakers.

          Way back when in law classes we actually had a whole section just on punctuation, and how it could alter a case. Seems like Maine did not have very bright or well trained lawyers writing that law.

        Medicare payment rules for decades have provided a set amount for occupational therapy and the same amount for services of speech therapy AND physical therapy COMBINED for each patient per year. This is because of the missing comma. Our professional accociations have been fighting this & have not won.

          That’s awful! How many billions have they saved at the expense of medicare patients? The law (federal I’m guessing) could be changed easy enough if the lawmakers were not so beholden to the medical industry instead of their constituents. Thanks for bringing up such an important topic.

    Omri Ceren, the Israel Project: Good Saturday.

    Overnight Iran launched its first direct military operation against Israel, dispatching a drone commanded from the Tiyas Airbase in Syria’s central Homs region.

    The Israelis used an Apache helicopter to intercept and down the drone, then sent four jets to destroy the command center (an Israeli military spokesperson confirmed “accurate hits of Iranian UAV control facility” ). One of the Israeli F-16s was abandoned by its pilots over Israel, amid what the Israelis describe as “massive Syrian anti-air fire”. Syrian anti-aircraft fire reached Israeli territory, triggering extended emergency activities in Israel’s northern communities.

    Iran and its proxies had been escalating their threats to attack Israel over the last few weeks. Hezbollah threatened to attack Israel for a range of reasons, from energy resource disputes to the Israelis building a border fence. Iranian cleric Ayatollah Ebrahim Raisi, one of the front-runners to be the next Iranian Supreme Leader, toured the Israeli-Lebanese border and boasted about operations to secure “Jerusalem’s liberation”.

    A couple of things to watch:

    (1) Military — Iran and its proxies have structured their forces in Syria and Lebanon to guarantee mass casualties during their next war with Israel — In Syria, Hezbollah says it has 10,000 fighters ready to attack Israel and to create a single front across all of Israel’s north and northeast. In Lebanon, Hezbollah has transformed hundreds of villages into “military strongholds,” according to the AP, effectively conscripting human shields who will become civilian casualties blamed on Israel, according to the NYT. They’ve stockpiled roughly 150,000 rockets and missiles, allowing them to saturation bomb Israeli population centers with 1,500 rockets and missiles per day for over three months, and Hezbollah chief Nasrallah says the group will use those projectiles against Israel’s civilian nuclear installations and chemical facilities, triggering tens of thousands of casualties. Hezbollah leaders also say their Syrian battle experience will allow them to launch a ground invasion of Israel, in part through advanced hardened military tunnel infrastructure.

    (2) DC politics and policy — The exchanges touch nuclear and non-nuclear Iran issues — On nuclear, recent reports confirmed that parts of the windfall Iran received from the nuclear deal flowed to Hezbollah. On non-nuclear, the Trump administration this month targeted Hezbollah with sanctions. Differing proposals to fold missile restrictions into the nuclear deal are at the core of the debate over President Trump’s request for Congress and Europe to “fix” the deal.

        Indeed. In fact, I don’t want any more support going to the Middle East, period. End of story. That they would take our aid money and give it to terrorist organizations is too much a risk to take, and anyway, they have oil money. They don’t need ours.

        Let them be their own brother’s keepers for a change. I’m tired of the fact that my country is the caretaker for the whole freaking world.

      Israel’s already sending messages that it’s ready to kick Hezz ass. It has openly contacted Russia asking Russian assistance in reining in Iranian Hezz proxy fighters in Lebanon so that when it does strike it can’t be said it didn’t explore other options.
      Ad I’ve said before, the Hezz is a division of the IRG and the IRG is the terrorism export office of the Iranian government. Our recent POtuS in striking the ‘Iranian Deal’ left the Iranian support of Hezz out of it, he allowed Hezz (Iran) to keep on undermining Lebanon and planning an attack on Israel not only from Lebanon but from its Assad-regime supported bases in Syria. It has already located, targeted and, in the last few hours, launched air raids into Syria to strike Hezz (Iranian) positions in Syria (one plane reported lost). It has also warned Hezz in Lebanon to get ready to be hit but those Hezz positions that threaten the Golan area, among others, are on tap.
      Now that we don’;t have a crypto-Moslem in the WH furthering Islamic worldwide conquest it looks like Israel is getting ready to take care of anti-Israel business that the WH allowed (supported?) during the recently ended DC caliphate.

    It’s a Louisiana morning: the state attorney general (R) is suing the Army Corps of Engineers over the Industrial Canal. The Canal when originally built was supposed to stay 9-feet deep and 125-feet wide. It was built to allow barges and smaller ships to transit to and from New Orleans to the upper Gulf where previously they had to go south to the mouth of the Mississippi and back up the river to the city.
    As the city gradually killed the businesses that used the Canal there were fewer and fewer ships, down to a handful a month including the infrequent shipments of center tanks for the Space Shuttle from NASA’s Michoud facility. The Canal destroyed thousands of acres of cypress swamp between St Bernard Parish and allowed the hurricane surge in Katrina to roll into St Bernard Parish and the 9th Ward – before the Canal destroyed that marsh it would have absorbed and mitigated that surge. The city and the Corps moved funding elsewhere during the decades after it was built and the Canal, like Topsy, jes growed. In places it’s nearly 700 feet wide and continues to grow. Post-Katrina the Corps built a huge wall with a gate that can be closed to help prevent a surge from zooming down the Canal and into the City again but one could still roll in over the marsh and the Canal still continues to erode its banks.
    The attorney general (R) is going to sue the Corps and force them to address the mess they made with the Canal, the Corps failed to maintain it as they were required to and they should clean up the mess so the AG wants the courts to stick it to ’em. Problem is the governor (Rat) is pissed, he wants the AG to stop the suit as the AG ‘didn’t consult the governor or state agency charged with overseeing the Canal’. Well wait a minute – the state and thatv agency have sat on their thumbs for DECADES, allowing this damage to occur. The damages were major press issue after Katrina, the press was all over how the surge rode up the Canal in a wave and flooded everything between the Gulf and downtown NOLA…it was ‘THE’ story. Fast forward nearly b13 years and what have the various governors and state agencies done…nothing, same as the decades before Katrina.
    I’m sure the Rat governor sees a Republican AG trying to gore one of the state’s sacred cows and couldn’t care less about the people sweating another deluge, his main concern is politics. As with nearly everything that effects compartmentalized political kingdoms in Louisiana, the kings get testy when they perceive their fiefdoms under attack. We expect to see someone in the State government, or some cutout, file suit to stop the suit. Meanwhile the Canal continues to grow…

      Let me see if I follow this:

      The canal was built to allow transportation, but the businesses that used the canal were driven out of business by the city, so now there’s little to no point to having it. Meanwhile, all the swampland that used to be there got taken out, which caused huge repercussions when Katrina came though, and now the AG wants to sue the Feds for this mess of not caring for the canal that practically no one uses. (And if they sue the Feds and get a judge to agree that it’s in part the Corps’ fault, Rhea up in Indiana can get stuck with part of the bill along with the rest of the country, rather then just all the folks in Louisiana having to sort this out.)

      Did I get all of that?

        There’s a big old gate in that wall to let those infrequent ships/barges go through. They can close it if a surge comes…we hope…but if the surge hits the thousands of acres of marsh between the Mississippi river levees and the Canal levees and locked in to the east by the elevated I-510/Paris Road will still drain through a narrow ditch that goes under a bridge on the road. It took far longer for the mess in St Bernard and parts of the Lower 9th to drain than it should but while building this huge flood wall no one built any more drainage from wrest of the highway to the east.

        That area between the Mississippi on the bottom all the way up to the lake at the top flooded to one degree or another, much of it badly. That swampy area between the canal at the top and the more urban area at the bottom is the cypress and higher land area that canal destroyed. You can see that river looking ribbon in the swamp to the left of Paris Road that seems to disappear going under the road but, if you expand the pic, actually narrows but drains the area to the west of the road. Paris Road is elevated about 3 feet so after that part of the surge over 3 feet deep washes back over the road draining east allllll of that swamp has to drain through that ditch. Great planning, huh?

            We don’t know, it’s supposed to protect against another Katrina event BUT there are other ways for the surge to get through. The wall should stand but if a steady, wind-driven surge piles up against it will it overtop or could it run north-south looking for a weak point. We won’t, rather they won’t, know until the event happens. BTW, Federal Katrina money is STILL coming into NOLA as the city finds more things damaged/destroyed 13 years ago they are just now finding.
            As you’re newish you haven’t heard my tale on how the US taxpayers bought sooooooo many NOLA folks who had no insurance – and many had no titles to their houses – BRAND NEW FOR FREE HOUSES! Sometime when the telling nauseates me less.

    Awhile back I was dating this girl who loved Rice Krispie treats.

    We’d go to 7-11 and she’d buy a pack.

    At Costco she’d sheepishly walk up and ask “Baby, can we get these?” and then toss a 30 pack of them into the cart.

    She was one of the few girls I’ve dated who had a similar sleeping pattern to me. She liked being up late and sleeping in.

    So, one day, I got up before her (at like 11AM, I mean we would really sleep in) and I made her a tray of Rice Krispie treats.

    When she finally woke up, she came into the kitchen to make coffee. She saw the tray of Rice Krispie treats and rather than look happy, as I had assumed, she looked confused.

    “Where did you get that?”

    “I made them”

    “How?”

    “Well, I grabbed the ingredients at the market. You were on your phone and didn’t notice.”

    “No, I mean HOW did you make them?”

    See, she thought that Rice Krispie treats were something that only came pre-packaged and that people lacked the ingredients and technology to make them at home. I was raised the exact opposite. I thought it was weird that they sold something that my mom would whip up in ten minutes to put in our school lunches.

    But she WAS super excited once the realization set in that she could now have hot, unlimited Rice Krispie treats from the comfort of her own home. Her boyfriend must have studied under the Dalai Lama or found some book of Black Magic, because he knew how to make them.

    She was very, very appreciative and probably one of the hottest girls I’ve ever dated, so I would make Rice Krispie treats A LOT over the next few months before she went crazy and I had to kick her out and put her on a plane.

    Point of the story besides the comedy and entertainment? Two things. Never assume that anybody you’re dealing with has the same knowledge base that you do. Chances are good that they don’t.

    Secondly, society loses knowledge very quickly if it’s not retaught and drummed into peoples’ heads. It shouldn’t shock ANYONE that we have an entire generation of very, very vocal people who have no idea of all the BS the Clintons pulled over the years or that Communism is a dangerous idea only embraced by idiots.

        I had a teacher I my senior year of high school, taught US Govt & Economics, with a couple of sidebars on political science & logical thinking. It seems every couple of days I find some of that education pops into my head when reading something or listening on the TV or radio, & it seems so many people can’t think or put this stuff together…..

      The first point of the story – never assume…knowledge base – has two sides.

      Wicked Son was around 17 when he asked ‘why are ppl so dumb’?
      Some may assume others have the same knowledge base, as 17 yo WS did. Others do not realize that a few have a greater knowledge base, or refuse to acknowledge that others have a greater knowledge base.

      Sadly, Old Guys – and a few Young Guys – who actually do have a greater knowledge base are ridiculed and/or ignored now, which may be how the knowledge of how to make Rice Krispie treats is lost, even though the recipe is written on every box of RKs.

      Oh, that’s right, we do not eat Rice Krispies anymore, is lacking fibre, or somefoolthing, I firgit, dementia setting in.

    Snow totals yesterday varied from 4 to 9 inches. Another 1-3 inches expected tomorrow. There is at least a foot of snow on my patio tables and chairs.

      Unfortunately the weather folks didn’t miss it. It’s in the 20’s and icy. I had to go check goats and slipped and slid all the way to the barn. I didn’t venture out this morning when husband said since I coughed all night he’d take of chores and I didn’t argue, between coughing, runny nose and burning, watery eyes, sneezing and fever I got very little sleep.

        My sister in British Columbia said her husband had to clear a path for her to get out of the house. The pictures she sent looked like 4 ft. of snow. He may have been concerned about losing her in the snow when she took the dogs out. She is only 4 ft. 10 in. tall. LOL

      Oh, goodness…..summer days, warm and still afternoons, cattle moving idly to get under some shade, carrots ripe in the garden, sitting in the rows – eating fresh peas right off the vine, washing up at 4:30 to get into the house to help peel potatoes for supper, and then after supper and after the dishes are washed – still time to scoot back outside for some quiet warm evening sky-watching. We never had the radio “on” in the house – just heard the music of the day when I was driving up to get the mail – about 3/4 mile on the country road…..singable melodies. Understandable words. Nothing filthy. Those were the days.

      Oh, and now I see Jim Reeves comes up as a next item to click on – …….

    I was watching the news to see what the “smart” folks says it’s going to do overnight. They check in with their reporters who are driving to check road conditions, while telling everyone they shouldn’t travel unless necessary and that the roads are getting slick and will continue getting slicker. ODOT and Highway Patrol are warning folks to stay off the roads.

    Am I the only one that finds it stupid that they just can’t say that without driving on the slick roads?

    Sorry it just always annoys me, I honestly do not need to see you driving on the road to know it’s slick. Sending reporters to drive dozens of different roadways is not going to make me any more or less likely to drive on ice. Heck I know it’s slick, all I have to do is walk out in my front yard to know there’s ice. Guess what I’m also smart enough to feel and see the ice falling.
