In Bew Orleans at our place, gotta be in early for some tests. I snuck in the back way, used the ferry instead of driving thru the city, always great to take the river at night. It started to come back to me, started to miss it a little but I choked it off.
One of the huge Carnival cruise ships, I presume one that was diverted here when the Texas ports were closed, came down the tiver right past us about two hundred feet from the ferry. They all look like a floating mountain of lights at hight, you can watch them disappearing down the river and around the bend, that mountain of lights that just illuminates the entire river.
Been here about four hours and no gunshots yet…

It wouldn’t even have occurred to me that the river would be dredged deep enough for that much draft.
I wish you had gotten pictures to post. This ain’t the first time I’ve wished that, Czar.
Your words do quite a picture, still. As always.

Passing the Carnival Dream
in the Mississippi River… 😉

That’s it, but this one was more huger and more closerer. Most amazing single ship we saw on the river was an aircraft carrier the Navy docked in NOLA for some special event. It was so tall that they had to cut the power to a huge set of transmission towers that went over the river, they were afraid that the electricity would arc to the carrier. Regular oil tankers, cargo and cruise ships go under it with no issues.
Most beautiful was a flotilla of tall ships that came for a celebration. The crews had all mounted the rigging on the ships by where we were standing down river. We got to see the ships as they climbed into the riggings and as they sailed into the city. Can’t beat the river.

Missisippi’s wide and deep at NOLA, around 180 to 200 feet deep and just short of a half mile wide where it sweeps across the city east to west. There’s been an oceangoing ship on the bottom right close to the GNO bridge for decades, big cargo ships pass right over it with no danger of hitting it even at really low river levels. I watched the river swallow up a huge barge next to the dhore, it just disappeared in a splash and business goes on right over it. Ferry captain said it was about 90 feet deep at the shore at that spot.
River’s one of the few things I miss, it’s amazing. We’ve watched it do some amazing things over the years. A few years back when the Midwest had those huge floods the water passed to the river thru New Orleans and the river wentnup, way up, but never flooded us. Our house is about a mile from the river and we’d walk to the river, up the levee and sit on top watching it flow by. At that flood the water was much higher than normal, almost above the concrete armor that shields the levee on the riverside. We knew that we were all living with a swath of fsdt moving water, about twelve feet above our roofline and about a half of a mile wide just down the street but that’s life. Does get a bit weird when you are downtown and you look up to see a huge cargo ship on the river floating above your head.

Back in the late 80s I befriended one of the ferry pilots that drove the Canal Street boat. I’d park on thecwest side, he’d let me come up to the wheelhouse and I’d spend hours looking out from three stories above as we went back and forth.
He showed me whirlpools that formed in the river thst, if the ferry hit one, could knock it around. He said mud mountains would form underwater at times and were the ferry to hit one it could stop it or make it heel over. More than once we saw huge trees, roots and branches with no leaves, on top. They’d floated down the wriggley snake of a river from points north – the ones on top were easy to avoid but more than one ferrys had it rudders and/or props broken by hitting huge ones floating just below the surface. Most neatest was seeing a huge tree just pop up in the river vertical and just sink straight back down.
We also had anomalous waves, waves that would travel downriver, a hundred or more feet wide, as if from nowhere. That usually causes the captain to change course into it and delays the trip a bit. And let’s not forget the wind. I mostly took the Chalmette ferry that crossed to Algiers were we lived. That part of the river runs northish/southish but catches the west evening wind. Wasn’t unusual to feel the ferry shudder fighting the wind but one day we were on a smaller, older ferry thst had a lot of metal structure. We took off from Chalmette and immediately could feel the wind pushing us downriver instead of our going straignt over. The metal surface acted like a sail to catch the wind andvthe engines weren’t that powerful to fight the wind. The captain concentrated on keeping the nose upstream while slow,y letting the wind push us into the far shore. He then used the main engines and thrusters to tack the mile-plus back to the dock where we supposed to be, offloaded the cars and trucks, reloaded and went back to the other side..just another day. Love dat ribber.

You come to NOLA, you get a big poboy or muffuletta, a cold beer, go sit on the Moon Walk, eat, drink and just feeeeeeeel the power of the river. Just like those big cats at somevpetting zoos that let you pet them but every now and then tear someone into pieces just to let you know that they’re just putting up with you.

Another eventful day…
A task like this is an adventure for men. And we did it.
System D is incredibly fun, when you work with others who also use it.
How do you move a semi trailer, with no wheels, using a completely badass anachronism-forklift, driven by the 77-year old dad of the kid (heh.) who built it, and only the things around you. Oak pallets. They make nice furniture sliders for semi trailers. Then leveling it with concrete blocks and 4-by posts. And, at the outset, we all knew the goal, and yet — none of us knew what we were doing. As I said in the slideshow, then I went to work. And the sunset was the biggest red sun I’ve ever seen.

When I say System D, I mean MacGyver engineering. Kitchen workers use it.
Every intelligent person uses it. Look at the goal. Look at what you have. Use it.

Been subjected to idiotic gansta rap for the last three shifts.
I come home and listen to this and Rachmaninoff.
I mean, we also mix it up with Bonamassa and Tedeschi Trucks Band, and Willie, and Johnny Cash, every so often. But my music is lacking in our mix.
I want to see how a kitchen works with Rachmaninoff’s “Pianoconcerto No. 2.”, and not the N-Word every five seconds.

Wooly, next time they play rap, ask if they will play some Lecrae for you.
It’s still going to be rap, but it is Christian rap. I think you will find Lecrae’s message more tolerable.

All animated, and stylized the same, but different.
Rhea, (up above here): Listen to Sage Francis, Aesop Rock, and Brother Ali.
I’ve linked all three here. I don’t hate rap, I love it. I hate what popular rap has become. I don’t want Eminem screaming at me. I don’t. You want to talk and say stuff, lose the anger, and just talk and say stuff.
Nobody likes to be yelled at — and yet somehow Rage Against the Machine became popular and filthy rich for yelling at their audience about the evils of capitalism.
There is indeed a lot of good rap out there. It ain’t Dre and Jay Z.

Us white boys in Boston liked it because it was shocking in its obscenity, for the same reason we liked Sam Kinison and Andrew “Dice” Clay.
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, for that matter. That was good stuff.

I have lots of Of Monsters and Men in my music collection. Sorry Wooly I don’t like any rap unless like I said a while ago you want to call Charlie Daniels Carolina rap because the song is mostly talking.
I don’t like the rhythm, staccato, repetition of rap I find it jolting not peaceful, energizing or intriguing. But that is just me not my cup of tea.
Katie Melua in my opinion is overlooked in America, her voice is beautiful.

“Obsession” is my middle name. I become curious about some totally unimportant subject and then spend hours looking things up on the Internet.
Tonight it was heights and net worth of various film stars over the years. It can be difficult to get correct info…one website said Audrey Hepburn was 5’7″ but yet in an interview with her son Sean Ferrer, he said she was 5’10” (and that could be a typo..LOL!). Anyhow, if you look at her films you can see that she is tall in comparison to her male costars that we know were also very tall, such as Gregory Peck (“Roman Holiday”) who was 6’3″.
BTW, he was the only actor I ever saw who when he walked into a room, everybody stopped to watch him. I was eating at the commissary counters at Universal Studios and he came in the front door and walked into the Executive Dining Room with some producers. I think he was in pre-production for “MacArthur.”
Working in studios you get used to seeing the biggies and those who want to be; and so, you really don’t pay much attention to their comings and goings. But Peck was impressive, and quite a nice man from what I heard via the grapevine.
Net worth at time of death also is hard to pinpoint…adjusted for inflation, etc. Hepburn had a worth of $100 million. Peck, $40 million. Elizabeth Taylor, 5’2″ and $600 million. Mickey Rooney, 5’5″ and $20,000. Couldn’t find what Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. was worth, but he was 6’1″. Here’s a lovely photo of him and his father.
And, my goodness, it’s almost 2:30 AM here in PDT. Time for beddy-bye….butnot before I mention that Marlon Brando was 5’9″ and left an estate worth $100 million.

I know I should maintain closer ties to family and friends and it is always sad when it takes tragedy to bring us together. It is something that I consciously work at but life is so full it is easy to put things off and let people we really care about fall to the peripheral of our lives.

I was trying to figure that out as well. All I can say is that I’m happy it’s not female parts costumes. That’s something, I guess. 😕

True. I guess it shows a little improvement. The dinosaurs are likely appropriately genderless.

I could have told them that. Glad they verified, though.

I don’t blame VW for Nazis, the post just reminded me about how some hippies referred to their love bugs as “Hitler Mobiles” and were delighted that it bothered their parents.
I read a book written by one character but I can’t remember who or even what it was about and he talked about how he and all his friends got “Hitler Mobiles” specifically to annoy their folks.

BTW, if you click on “3 views” and then when in Imgur, click on “next post”, this lovely article comes up: “If they had not done this the guy would be dead. He was 100% correct to call 911.”

My Lacey has to be anesthetized when she gets a haircut. The hair they remove weighs more than the remaining kitty! And she is not happy about it until she realizes it feels good. Then she gets frisky for an old gal. The biggest thing about her is her eyes! Thank God she only gets a haircut every other year!

This is a madder cat than the famous grumpy cat. Can you blame him?

I have no idea what kind of cat this is, but it just enchanted me 🙂 It reminds me of the cat picture Ad Rem has that I have admired. Maybe this is that kitty after a difficult day moderating 😉 hahaha!
Have to actually get some work done now, instead of just “putting out fires”. Thanks for the BF Nyet.I needed that 😉 Morning to anyone I missed 🙂

Ok – So how did I miss idiots in Dino costumes! Oh my gosh! They are figuring out the violence is backfiring, so now they are trying humor? It’s not working for them either! Thanks for the laugh sandandsea 🙂

We’re still not laughing at communists, though. If these bozodinos get the government they’re too ignorant to understand, they’ll be the second group to be “purged.”

Not to mention running around in the grass and dirt should dirty them up quite a bit and wherever they got them from should charge a handsome cleaning fee. It is all peanuts to Soros Inc..

“September Song” – Frank Sinatra (1962)
When I was a young man courting the girls
I played me a waiting game
If a maid refused me with tossing curls
I’d let the old Earth take a couple of whirls
And as time came around she came my way
As time came around she came.
For it’s a long, long time from May to December
But the days grow short when you reach September
When the autumn weather turn the leaves to flame
One hasn’t got time for the waiting game.
Oh, the days dwindle down to a precious few…
September, November…
And these few precious days I’ll spend with you
These precious days I’ll spend with you.
September, November…
And these few precious days I’ll spend with you
These precious days I’ll spend with you.
Sinatra had such wonderful breath control, style and phrasing. Note in the chorus (second paragraph above) he sings the word “short” in a clipped/cut-off manner. Love that!
Though this version doesn’t include the full lyrics, the rendition is very effective. Some of the original lyrics are specific to the Broadway libretto and, frankly, are sort of creepy.

So the fraudster CNN chap never dropped his mic to help the man who drove straight into the water with CNN’s cameras running but somehow he managed to change from shorts and shoes into pants and what looks like boots during the harrowing sixty second rescue. And the guy is exhausted? He climbed out of his truck, go to the gym buddy.

May CNN be swallowed up in a sinkhole.

lilbirdee12’s prayer:
Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.
Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.
We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.
And, Lord, we pray for help for the people of Texas who are caught in the flooding.
In Jesus name, we pray. Amen
