Actually a ‘private’ corporation with government funding…sorta like the Post Office but with a greater chance of killing you.
Really is a government chimera though, to get from New Orleans to Denver on Amtrak I’d have to go from NOLA to D.C., then to Chicago, then to Raton, NM and then on to Denver. Cost is almost $1700, not including meals and incidentals, and takes DAYS to complete. Cattle call on Southwest takes about 3 houses and costs $187.

That’s true. I looked into taking Amtrak from Detroit to Florida. Too long and too expensive.

They should also upgrade train accommodations. I’ll bet most of the cars were built back in the 1970’s and 1980’s, the bathrooms are tiny and nasty, there’s no wireless access unless you are on a couple of select routes on the east or west coast, and if you have a small sleeper, the shared shower facilities are worse than in a high school gym. The food is passable, but I hear they lose money on it. I took the round-trip from Chicago to Seattle, one way in coach, and one way in a sleeper. The fare was reasonable but it wasn’t a particularly comfortable trip.

The public railway system in Europe in the 60s was better than Amtrack is today. We have a terminal in the larger city to our south and the terminal’s cleaner and more comfortable than the train.

                  • Then again, Europe didn’t have to pay for their own defense in the 60s. We had their back, so they spent most of their tax revenues on public freebies and goodies.

Forgot…I’m told that in NM I’d have to change trains by traveling on a BUS! That’s the Feds influence, what would make less sense than changing trains on a major route by having to board a bus?

From FL to VA I had to change trains and go one hour past my destination and then take a train or a bus back one hour to my destination. It was a very long and tiring trip.

You used to have to do that in Boston to get from North Station to South Station. Get off the train, get on the MBTA subway or bus, get back on the train at South Station. The insanely expensive Big Dig made it better. I think… They started it when I moved there, and worked on it for the ten years I was downtown, and finished it ten years after I left, about ten times over budget. Gotta love bureaucracy and unions.

Bill O’Reilly loses job offer at One America News Network as former Fox News host tries to get back on air

    http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/tv/bill-o-reilly-loses-job-offer-america-news-network-article-1.3263780

OAN CEO Robert Herring publicly announced on Twitter Tuesday afternoon that the former Fox News host no longer had a standing offer.

“We are pulling offer to @billoreilly, it could have paid him more than he made at Fox,” he tweeted. “We wish him luck.”

Herring told Mediaite that O’Reilly and his agent had taken too long to make a decision after discussions about starting a talk show on OANN.

The network was also trying to steal Sean Hannity away from Fox News Channel in an attempt to grow its brand, according to Mediaite.

Plan to make immigrants wait 15 YEARS before claiming aged and disability pensions and other welfare cuts ‘will save Australia $900 million’

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4623948/Immigrants-wait-15-years-pension-new-proposals.html

Migrants will be forced to wait up to 15 years before qualifying for aged or disability pensions under new laws bound for federal parliament.

The Turnbull government is also reviving a push to cut off pensions to people after six weeks overseas, as part of a bundle of welfare cuts expected to net almost $900 million in savings.

Social Services Minister Christian Porter argues it is reasonable to expect people coming to Australia have contributed to the economy and society before claiming a pension.

The Russian Hacking Hearing is a total baloney sandwich.

    Jeh Johnson ;

“One of the candidates” was saying the election might be rigged so we didn’t want to confuse people by giving them the information about Russian efforts to influence the election.😏

We tried to tell the public about the Russian interference but the Access Hollywood tape took away our thunder. 😞

I guess in hindsight I should have bought a sleeping bag and slept out in front of the DNC. 😎

In order to help stop election hacking Jeh Johnson suggested giving money to State Election Officials 🙄.

Howdy “The DNC never turned over server why didn’t they? Why would the victim of a crime not turn over evidence of a crime?” 😏

Schiff “It seems to me that Gowdy is blaming the victim.” 😢

Meanwhile the democrats keep telling witnesses who have actual information and light to shed on the “Russian Hacking” to shut their mouths.

This is the best, most succinct and true synopsis of my childhood — regarding the nascent internet — I’ve ever read. The author is right. We had coolness, they had more phone line than one at a time. Some of the better BBSs were colleges, with multiple phone lines.

Playing Crowther’s Adventure was only possible at school, or by using the C=64 to access Andrews Universtity’s BBS, which was multiplatform, because at that time, a Terminal program was a Terminal program.

I regret that I only ever used that early knowledge, which my Dad paid so much money for, more than his mortgage, more than his car payments, for playing games and entertaining myself.

Me and a buddy out east ran a Pirate board for the C=64 users. One computer. One phone line. No hard drives were in use then, just a 5+1/4″ floppy with 512kb. Later we got a “MEG DRIVE!!! OMG!!” and stacked the two. They were gigantic. You send us brand new games (0-1 day old), we give you credit to DL games that other people sent us.

Remember, this wasn’t the internet. This was a phone line. This was actual audio being transmitted as two tones, high and low, to represent 0 and 1. Remember your 14.4 modems making that handshake sound when you dialed up one of your local AOL numbers? That “screeching” is just two tones.

My buddy’s house got raided by the FIBs, doors kicked in, and everything in the house that had an Integrated Circuit in it was confiscated. Including the microwave oven and the alarm clocks, let alone all the Commodore stuff, and the many shoeboxes of floppys. We were 17. When he was 19, he was hired by a software company. I was tripping and being a stupid hippie.

Some day I’ll tell you about PJ-2. It was in the glove compartment, and the cops have it now. Hopefully it’s in a trophy case.

            Actually, today I’ll tell you.

It was 9″ long, and 1 1/2″ thick. Inscribed with a marker, “The People’s Joint”:. You could play the drums with it. We did.

We were parked at a golf course parking lot, late at night, and…

…earlier we were followed around by a buddy who didn’t partake in the green, and always ragged on us for it…

…and he drove a LTD Crown Vic. Heh. We managed to ditch him.

…A Crown Vic pulls up, while we’re filling the car with smoke like Barack Obama in Hawaii.

I roll down my window, and say “Hey, man, whassup!!” He said “Hey man, License and Registration!!” Awww s***.

They said give us all your stash. I opened the center compartment and gave them a Marlboro pack with 2 jibbas (colloquial) in it, and they said, “Is that all? If we search this car and find any thing at all, you’re going to jail.”

I said, “Ok..” Went to the glove box, pulled out this behemoth, and all the cops on scene laughed their butts off and told us all to take a hike, and come back for the car later.

            I bet they smoked it.

I wish my brother were still alive. He would be Gates. He wrote a neat spiral-generating program for the C=128 and it was published in a magazine called RUN.

I can’t imagine having a 47 year old brother right now. What would he be like, if he overcame it all instead of ending it all at 19? A bottle, a car, and a garage.

I had three parties at 18 years of age in my Folks’ apartment north of Boston, as they went to Michigan for his funeral. I got the call when I was home alone, from the local PD in MI. I said, “It’s about time. Thank you, officer.” then wrote a note to my Folks and put it on the kitchen table. “Call the PD in the old town. I’ll be hanging with my friends.”

At the parties, I removed all my Mom’s knick-knacks, and the nice and varied doilies under them, and even the shelves themselves, and locked them in their room.

She only knew I hosted parties because all the doilies were under the wrong things. 🙂

About 6 years ago, I was hanging with an older dude, playing PS2 and driving for a cab company. When we had no fare we hung out at his house.

He had a land-line, still, and a standard old house phone. He also had a cellphone. I told him, because he doubted me, that I could call his phone without even using the number buttons on his house land-line phone. I should have bet money.

      His phone rang.

Tap the numbers on the hang-up button, quickly. Pause between each. It works, because that’s how a rotary-dial worked. You turn that dial from “9” it taps 9 times.

The reason the FIBs came is a whole ‘nuther story, involving phreaking and social engineering. We would call this 1-800 number and get a real, live, American, English speaking operator who would say, “How would you like to bill this call?”

“Visa”, etc. Make up a random number, matching the digit codes of the respective cards. Change it when she asks for another, give up after two tries. Most guesses work. The rule was, only use them once.

Some lady in Chicago got a +$1,000 phone bill. My buddy used the CC more than once.

It’s probably good that I became a stupid hippie for a while.

NWS is showing ❤ inches of rain in NOLA over the last 24 hours but news is making it sound like Armageddon. Reporter is out in the East on a service road along the Lake showing the flooding (not even ankle deep wind-blown water) and what she referred to as a boat blown onto the beach (actually a medium size shrimp boat that was abandoned there, it was all busted up with ID numbers sanded off). Usual places around the city that have flooded for decades due to crappy engineering are being shown with the usual frantic delivery.
Lakeshore drive, a street built to flood as it's a lake level, is being shown FLOODED!! It's flooded whenever there's been a steady north wind for centuries as it's at lake level, that's why, many decades ago, a huge levee was built inland about 300 feet south, to prevent the regular flooding from moving south into the inhabited areas.
Henny Penny and Robin Willams do the news and weather, with local and state pols taking to the air to get their facetime as they parrot basic information while trying to look heroic. All of the TV fallout is worse than the storm.
