Ok, this is just a silly old plastic church, with one little light,,,, but to me this meant Christmas. My mother had it, and it played Silent Night on a wind up chime. I have my own now, I haunted ebay until I found it… and when I sit it in the dark corner with the little light on, my childhood memories glow warm and sweet….

To me the best part about decorating for Christmas is rediscovering the ornaments from years past. I have all of my mother’s ornaments, and I love to look at each one, and remember …

For whatever reason my mother only used plain glass balls… nothing else.. Her house, her traditions. What she did have was a little plastic star that went on the tippy top. Ebay to the rescue again, I found one. 🙂

I use an angel, which I have had since 1989. My younger GS wanted to know why, because they use a star on their tree.

Angels and stars are both good. The star of Bethlehem and the Herald Angels! Both came to welcome baby Jesus and announce his birth…

Angel at our home, too.

I have a small collection of these Goebel Angels… They are my personal treasure… My mother had them, it was my job to set them up on the mantel with some candles and pine branches.. When I left home, ebay helped me get my own… Now I have them all…. it has been a few years since I was able to unpack them, because of moving and what not…

One of my Christmas traditions is to buy each of my GS’s (and my daughter and husband) a new ornament each year. That way, they will have a head start on tree decorating when they get their own homes.

Every year I ask DH for an ornament as a gift. He is not much of a shopper and it is a simple request. I tried to sew my own mini stockings out of felt and decorate them…Lets just say they were pretty humble…

appropriate IMO, amwick….the stable and manger were “pretty humble” too…I think you hit the Spirit…. Bigly.

My favorite decoration was a stable that DH made for me, and a bunch of dollar store figures of the nativity….It was rustic and breathtaking at the same time.. 🙂

I have a small, inexpensive, nativity set that I got at the craft store. I made the stable out of cardboard and painted it. I really like it.

He built a frame out of some scrap lumber, and covered it with hunks of tree bark.. We always had a ton of tree bark that came loose when we split logs for the wood burning stove. Cardboard is a good idea though… hmmmmm

The Texas State Capital gift shop has a new ornament each year for That Year…and my wife buys one every year, and one for each of our kids in a collection for the last 25 years…and they make a total small tree combined with a few “special memory” ornaments from when the kids were growing up from birth…..she has been relentless and never missed a year…..whether the kids want it or not….they have each a collection to take away with them leaving home.

An old favorite. The holiday season isn’t complete for me without Dean Martin.

One of my favorite things about mass during Advent is getting to sing the Agnes Dei. I love it. Sometimes the haunting beauty of it gives me this tiny glimpse of a profound beauty I cannot yet see, a language I don’t yet know. But my heart yearns, and this is a calling for it, for all that I cannot even imagine. It’s a call of love to our savior, yes, but hints of so much more.
I have learned in the past several years that sacred music done well leads the soul on a journey of beauty and celebration, a journey of promise we long for. I wish everyone could experience the beauty of reverent liturgy combined with this kind of music.
I really didn’t care for it at first, but even my ignorance could not stand against its seduction.

I guess spell check likes Agnes a lot better than Agnus.

And so to honor Him…

I always said this band was covertly Christian.
This fact is undeniable.
They play to hippie festival concert crowds.
They’re used by God.

20 or so years I rockified a song written by Ellen Lakshmi Gorch in the 1800s.
The Gorch song was “In the Secret of His Presence.”
How my soul delights to hide.

If I had a private island to whose shores I could banish three people, it would be Bobby McFerrin, Imogen Heap, and Beardyman. They, together, would create musical utopia.
Now, I seriously think about a kickstarter.
Let me direct those three — be their kitchen manager on one musical project.
It would be epic.

One of the funniest things in the world, to me, is is that Bobby doesn’t know that he’s been my tutor for the last 25 or 30 years.
When I meet him I hope I have a can of shoeshine.

Well we had a very nice time at our friends’ Christmas potlatch supper. After dinner Christmas sing along,,, and one that is relatively new(1991), considering.. This is a lovely song.. and the lyrics are soulful all on their own
Mary did you know?
[Verse 1]
Mary did you know that your baby boy will some day walk on water?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you’ve delivered, will soon deliver you.
[Verse 2]
Mary did you know that your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will calm a storm with his hand?
Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
And when you kiss your little baby, you have kissed the face of God.
Oh Mary did you know
The blind will see, the deaf will hear, the dead will live again.
The lame will leap, the dumb will speak, the praises of the lamb
[Verse 3]
Mary did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary did you know that your baby boy would one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy is heaven’s perfect Lamb?
This sleeping child you’re holding is the great I am
