Biofuels worse for climate change than gas, U-M study says

    http://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/2016/08/25/u-m-study-biofuels-worse-climate-change-than-gasoline/89265358/

The multi-billion-dollar U.S. biofuels industry — promoted and expanded for more than a decade by the federal government — may be built on a false assumption, according to a University of Michigan study published Thursday that is sure to stir all sides in the contentious debate over the industry.

Despite their purported advantages, biofuels — created from crops such as corn or soybeans — cause more emissions of climate change-causing carbon dioxide than gasoline, according to the study from U-M Energy Institute research professor John DeCicco.

I knew it. Just happy that it has been confirmed by a reputable source.

While I’m sitting down hsving my Sunday coffee I get a chance to reminisce. Today the thoughts of three WWII Sergeants Major I had the privilege to wotk with thru the late 80s came to mind.
All three had service experience in the ETO, two also in Korea and all three served during Vietnam, thry were in uniform from the 40s thru the 80s.
One, SGM Mac, always had my back. He retired shortly after I transferred out and as we lived closeby we kept in touch. His love was black labs and retriever trials and as soon as he’d retired he threw himself into it full tilt.
I received a call from him one day, he was in the hospital. Seems he was out on the Mississippi River levee running his prize lab when the dog got a bit rambunctious, ran in front of him, Mac tripped over the dog and fell down the levee. He wasn’t worried, even though he relized his leg was broken, he was a retired NOPD officer and had his gun and cell phone. Little danger of the predators that wandered the levees looking for prey picking him…but when the EMTs responded he wouldn’t leave until the responding officers assured him they’d take the dog to the vets for a checkup.
About acyear later I’m reading the newspaper and in the local section’s a story on how Mac was out in his boat in the nextbparish’s marsh, working a lab again, when a nasty winter storm blew in. It was wicked, windy, rainy, high winds and bitter cold. He gotbon uis cell and called for help, hecwas sure that the way things were going he was going to capsize. The Coast Guard sent out it’s local rescue chopper andvthey lowered a sling but Mac wouldn’t get in until they hoisted his lab so they brought the lab up and in then Mac willingly went.
SGM Moose was our office anchor, he loved to drink but it never interfered with his job. SGM Ashton was a true Cajun, half Indian, half French Cajun and had an accent you could cut with an ax. He came from the back-swamp of Acadiana into thevArmynin WWII where he was put into a tank destroyer unit that saw heavy action from day one thru the end of the war. He never talked about it but his records had more awards than any two people I’d ever seen. He’d spend hours telling us stories about his youth in the half-Indian, half-Cajun world he lived in. I never knew there were so many ways to cook song birds.
Just three of the people I’ve been blessed to know.

Czar, Thankyou. We are truly blessed to have met America’s best, and at time worst. The good soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines always out number the slackers. Thou some of those slackers, when the chips are down, are standing along side of you.
We have never met, face to face. But I know you, tough as nails a no BS kind of soldier who took good care of the troop, and soldiers. Officers come and go, the troop remains because of excellent soldiers like yourself.

Sorry that it’s large. This is only the second time I’ve been able to successfully post a pic.

This is one of the Benedictine monks from Norcia. He and another monk have stayed behind in the area and the two tents are their home for now. Rainy season and cold weather is coming soon to the region.

I find this picture incredibly moving. We don’t see men like this in our world anymore. This man, who appears to be one of the younger monks, has chosen to live in this world separated unto his God. People today, especially in the active, work and problem-solving mentality of Americans (which may also be disappearing) find it hard to understand a man like this. The mission of these monks is prayer, not works. They work to sustain themselves. This was part of the reform of St. Benedict.

Every parish church in the area of Norcia is damaged. The little underground crypt church is the only sanctuary able to be used, but it’s very small. All the years of work these monks have put into restoring the Basilica, and the buildings have been found to be unstable, so the monks can’t use them. The leader of their community has put out a message every day, and not one word of complaint or negativity can be found. He just calmly states the facts, as his community of men continue their daily prayers in a temporary location. They had to relocate out of the area for a time, but the two using the tents were left behind….to continue their mission of prayer in Norcia. Since many of these monks are Americans, I would imagine their first impulse was to get out into the community and start “doing.” These are not effete, lazy men. But there are others there, present and capable, to “do” in the way good people react in a crisis. Although the two men left there no doubt spend time with the people in the village and I’m sure they help as they can, their disciplined times of prayer are the priority.

Tell me about it. Those who went thru Katrina are getting those feelings in the pits of our stomachs. A lot of post-K transplants have their heads firmly planted up their behinds and think the levees will protect them and any utility disruptions will be resolved immediately. Bwaaahaaahaahaa.
Even more believe that all they have to do is drive up here north of the lake, park in our lots and wait the storm out. Little fo they know but the various LEA will be closing off the Interstate exits and others will be patrolling the various parking sites for anyone who slips through. The mess that many Katrina kampers left behind still remains in our minds. Our emergency planning does not include their lack of emergency planning.

Local, propane folks are great – they were out delivering within 3 days of Katrina passing but we’re getting a spare tank just in case. We’re not zakly priority out here when it comes to restoring electricity.

Breaking news around New Orleans is that there was a crash on the I-10 west of the city that killed two people and injured some 40 others. One of the dead is a St Johns Parish fire chief, and two of the other injured were firemen, one having just been taken out of the ICU.
Firemen were responding to an accident on the I-10 and used their firetruck to block the interstate. Along comes a speeding party bus full of construction workers bound for flood relief in Baton Rouge, slams into the fire truck and two other cars. Three firemen were knocked off the elevated interstate and into the bayou below and one of the cars was hit so hard the passenger in the back seat was killed. The majority of the injured were on the party bus.
Now for the rest of the story. The driver of the bus is an undocumented Honduran without a drivers licence and it’s being reported the majority of the workers on the bus, if not all, were also Honduran. No word on their immigration status. Owner of the rented bus has been contacted but is declining comment. ICE had been contacted and says it is aware of the situation but has taken no no action as of yet (accident was early this AM).

Went south to Coushatta today to a bit of property we own down there……. one tree down, needs to be cut up and DH can’t do it yet (shoulder.) And I ain’t gonna, so there’s that…… plus, ants. I hate ants.
We were gathering up some engineering books and manuals for a school in Minden – some guy over there is taking a lot of our (hoarding, if ya’s ask me) “collection” for a good purpose. I was DELIGHTED to go down there and haul boxes in the heat. So far we’ve delivered at least 14 packing boxes and tubs of pure, old, BOOKS. (This guy in Minden hates the new engineers out of school because all they know is computers and “autoshit.” Lol.)
Books is heavy, so I’ma drink a beer now.

I was putting something in the ground, I can’t remember what, the whole experience is a blur, I felt something stick me like a needle, then something else, and then again I look down and there are ugly ants crawling up my leg and biting me.

Most of the stuff after that is hazy. Remember I’m a Chicagoan I can deal with large predators but this was sneak attack by little fanged finks from the underworld.
