Where in Utah…I’ll tell you if that jurisdiction has any warrants or attachments on me. Then again it’s been a long time since I lived there and the statue of limitations has probably taken care of most of them.

Today is also the anniversary of the Battle of the Somme (WWI) — a horrific battle, especially for the Brits, who, in typical amazing ceremonial grandeur, honored the dead so beautifully: Check out the article’s photos. Some will make you weep.

My mother’s older brother, Allen, was gassed October 7th, 1918 at Argonne Meusc.
It was a truly horrible war. The British lost much of an entire generation of young men, and many thought “why?”

My grandfather, the Brit one, was gassed at Loos – by his own forces. Brits planned on using gas to soften German lines before the attack…and the wind changed. Brits suffered more casualties from their own gas release than the Germans did. Over 1 million gas casualties in WWI, majority Russian.
With be gassed in WW I and another a German Pioneer office my ending up as a Combat Engineer and a Chemical Specialist was sort of ironic but my service was nothing like the hell they lived through daily in WW I. To me it was the fusion war where traditional face-to-face war met modern industrial slaughter.

Ode of Remembrance (Laurence Binyon, from For The Fallen)
They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England’s foam.

It is the world’s first ‘modern’ war. Folks forget that there were around 23 million total casualties in that war when the world’s population was only about 1.8 billion.

At least it’s not strep throat, it seems everyone I talk to has strep lately, from toddlers to the elderly. My daughter and I was talking yesterday and she says she thinks all the illegals are to blame for that as well. lol
I told her that was part of it probably and another part of it is people have no common sense or common courtesy anymore and don’t keep themselves or their kids at home while they’re contagious.
LikeLiked by 4 people
I almost never get sick like this. My throat is sore, so I am going to go to Urgent Care here in a little bit to have them check for strep. I am making a trip to see my grandbaby in a few weeks, so I want to be sure I am completely over whatever this is.

It’s all ZM’s fault. 😦

It’s odd how many people from different parts of the country have strep.
The good news about strep is after 24 hours on antibiotics you’re no longer considered contagious and usually you feel a lot better after two days of antibiotics.
If you can see your throat in a mirror and it has white spots, good chance you have strep. When I was a kid I would get strep several times a year and the test always came back positive every time I had pus pockets on my throat.
LikeLiked by 2 people
I have known people to have strep without having the pus pockets. That is one reason I am going to get tested. This just started last night, so I really don’t know what it is.

OK, here’s the deal about Strep. First, you can’t diagnose it by looking at it. What looks like classic Strep–red, swollen tonsils, and white shaggy exudate, bad breath, big lymph nodes, fever, no cough–often isn’t; and what doesn’t look like it–just a red throat–often is. Testing is the only way to know. Strep can start with a sudden headache, or a stomach ache, and very little sore throat. Second, it is not the antibiotics that make you feel better, and we don’t prescribe them to make you feel better. Strep is a rapidly-passing infection. You would feel better in about 3 days whether you took antibiotics or not. The problem is that 20% of people with untreated Strep will get a major complication in the kidneys or heart, 3-4 months later. Of course, 80% won’t. But to prevent the complications, we treat everybody with antibiotics. And because the complications happen so much later, you can take the antibiotics a month after your Strep throat and still prevent the complications. The key to feeling better is Tylenol, ibuprofen, warm salt water gargles, sleep. Of course whiskey with honey and lemon is warranted too. Hope everybody is feeling better soon!
And I just realized that no one will see this except Stella, because I’m so late you’ve all gone to bed. Oh well.

I saw it. 🙂 I saw the doctor yesterday and they did one of those quick cultures and it was negative. But, he said he was sending one out and they would notify me if it was positive. He said this is just a cold. I don’t believe it, because I had a high fever last night, I felt like I was going to set the sheets on fire I was so hot. But, my temp is back down to normal this morning. I don’t have the runny eyes and nose that I associate with a cold. Just a sore throat.
LikeLiked by 2 people
The Rapid Strep Test (RST) has a 2% false negative rate–will say negative when it really is Strep. At our institution, we do a “long culture” on all negative RSTs for this reason. It takes 2 days, but catches those false negatives. Most people feel better by the time the result comes back, but as explained earlier, you still need treatment to prevent the complications.
Your description does sound like Strep, USmom. The culture will tell. In the meantime, do the warm salt water gargles every hour and stay on the Tylenol and/or ibuprofen round the clock. Hope you are better soon!
And, BTW, the very worst throat I ever saw in 24 years of practicing medicine, was viral–mononeucleosis. That was one very sick young man, and there was very little we could do for him other than symptomatic treatment. He wanted a medically-induced coma until it was over.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Can I ask what the Tylenol is for? I don’t take anything like that. And, I can stand the discomfort. I also am a believer that the fever is to help fight the bad germs. Anyway, I don’t have much fever right now, just a really bad sore throat. I find it hard to believe it is a cold, since there is some sinus involvement but it is just draining down my throat.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Tylenol and ibuprofen are simply to reduce pain and fever, which allows you to feel better while your immune system fights off the invasion (by either bacteria or virus) which is causing your symptoms. There are a handful of bacteria which cause upper respiratory symptoms, but there are about 50 different viruses (called rhinoviruses, where “rhino” = nose, which is how we acquire them) which do. Symptoms will vary somewhat from one to the next, and first exposure is usually worse than subsequent ones. If you are sick from a virus, and it is the first time you’ve had this particular virus, your symptom complex may be different from other episodes of viral Upper Respiratory Infection (URI or “common cold”). It usually takes our immune system 10-14 days to conquer an invading virus, and the only thing to do while waiting out that process is to treat the symptoms.

Thanks. I am going to visit my grandbaby in a few weeks. I sure hope I am completely over it by then. I probably will be.

Yes, you probably will be. But if you have any residual symptoms, don’t kiss or breathe on the baby, and wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before holding the baby.

Sorry, guy, I feel for ya but it’s all I got. Welllll….I could say that I’m sorry you’re a little hoarse from your colt, I’ll pony up a pun to make you feel better. If it’s caused by sinus drainage perhaps you’d feel better if you regularly gargoyled? Feeling better yet?

It is not clear who the attackers are, although a police officer told the BBC that Islamic militants were suspected.
Media reports quoted witnesses as saying that “Allahu Akbar”, meaning “God is greatest”, was heard as the attack took place.
MSM and Obama administration flummoxed as who the perpetrators could possibly be, likely to blame the patrons of establishment for existing.
