Sitting here looking at nine miles of bad weather rolling in and the iPad diesn’t like the radar page at the ‘local’ TV station. This looks like a bad ‘un sweeping in for the foks east of us after daybreak, nighttime cooling has taken the purple out of the doppler returns and we’re facing a lot of yellows and reds, should last about three hours. Good luck y’all who’ll be facing this mess tomorrow.

Yeah, I’ll make same guestimste I did on the Rookie plane that crashed in Egypt – someone in the ground crew did it.
The service personnel at airports are not screened as hard or regilarly on the job as to do so would cause even more delays than TSA screening has. The bad guys started co-opting ‘insiders’ in the 70s, go back to the old hijackings from PLO groups and you’ll see that, in many cases, they got a trusted groundcrew member to smuggle the bommb or guns on board.
Note how TSA managed to botch up screenings at major US airports, even in the TSA speedy-check libes we paid $85 to use. Not every airport, just the major ones that would make the news. As soon as enough POd passengers got the press interested and the heat started to ount the TSA hierarchy asks for thousands of more personnel, pumping up the size of the bureaucracy – perhaps to Make TSA its own bureaucratic Federal entity seperate from DHS ownership?
TSA’s falling down in a number of areas so don’t be surprised if something happens here. The Feds and TSA wil dance the usual ‘studies will be made and corrections made toensure this won’tnhappen again’, a few bureaucrats will retire or be reassigned and others woll be promoted while victims of a rotten bureaucracy are buried.
The bad guys are not stupid, they have a base set of plans they operate from, devoid of the need for PC, no EEO quotas, no emphasis on benefits and no birthday or holiday parties. Thry are meyhodical, dedicated and focused. Just because they haven’t managed anything here since 911 does not mean we’ve stopped them, they have a their definition of timing and siccess and they don’t necessarily agree with ours.

One quarter of the edge of the driveway from hell, back to the edge of the woods, weedeating done so far this morning, plus around the cabin. Not too bad so far, but it’s a toss up whether the rain or my attitude towards the job is gonna stop me first.

I need more coffee and some bacon. Alas, it’s Friday, so I shall get only one of them. 😀

Happy Friday y’all. Maybe I should just have a mimosa. Got no champagne. Maybe I should tweak the recipe a bit. 😉

I knows from whence ya comin’. Clos to 900 feet of driveway from hell here, and my big walk-behind mowers are out. Can’t really get a pull-behind in due to trees and the weeds/brush are going like they’re on steroids, looks like we didn’t do crap this winter. Maybe we should sell and buy a condomin in the city, have the staff do the ash-and-trash stuff as we sit on the logia and sip mimosas……..nah.

We enjoy the cabin while we can, but have started dreaded talks about selling it. The question is, where to go? Not moving back to the city, don’t want neighbors.

        So, not too many options.

Our driveway is too damned vertical. Quarter mile, winds right up the ridge. Everything is a PITA to mow/weedeat. Last summer I spent weeks staining the porches, walkways, stairs, handrails, balusters, etc outside. Weeks. Finally talked myself into using semi opaque stain because it should last longer. Ha! It’s already wearing off. I bought some of the best stuff out there and I know how to do great prep work. I ran the painting dept at the Depot for a time, and I own a painting business. Did everything textbook right.

Now, since I chose the more tinted stain, it just shows the wear more, where if I’d stuck with the barely tinted transparent stuff it just wears away and the protection is gone, but it doesn’t look pathetic.

If you don’t wanna go the weed killer route they have bio-regulators that you can spray on that slooooows plant growth, might work on the weeds. About 200 feet of ours is verticalish but the two smaller riding mowers work well there and the sawtooth oaks along both sides are starting to shade out the grass.
No way I could move back to the city, spent waaaaay to many years woth ceaseless bcakground noise, hearing my neighbor rummage thru his kitchen, flush his toilet – all of those irritating little noises that just -poof- disappear out here. They’ll fnd me dead on the porch before thry find me back in the city. Gotta be some smaller and easier steads divrced from the maddening crowds, if I had to I’d donthat rather than try to reacclimatize to urban bedlam.
What’s the altitude of your cabin? Could the stain you’re using not be UV resistant? How about a clear, UV resistant matte topcoat?

The stain is UV resistant, and the stuff for decks that you can walk on. Used the same stuff for the whole job, handrails and all. When I re-do it I will look at putting a topcoat of some kind on. I’m not sure what to put on top of an exterior penetrating stain that will actually bond.

The only places not holding up are the deck/step surfaces in areas. A few places are flaking as if it wasn’t pressure washed and had some surface problem. We extensively pressure washed and prepped everything. It was very dry, temps were right for application. Danged if I can nail the problem down. If I were still working in the paint dept and a customer came in with this problem I would have bet the farm that they didn’t pressure wash/clean right, or that they had used a stain for vertical surfaces such as fences, and it wasn’t right for foot traffic.

Got me. I’m putting out a new mailbox and I stained the prebuilt perfunctory mounting post and will seal it with matte polyurethane. We made patio out of concrete, just extended the slab, due to the battalions of hungry termites living in the forest soil.
Does it look like you’ll have to sand the walkway down?
Obe option is to call the maker of the stain directly, I’ve found they love to handle customer questions, especially if they think you’re gonna buy more of their stain.

              • Menagerie's avatar Menagerie says:

Yeah, I am considering their customer service dept. given the huge amount of work involved, I will likely sand the areas where the stain is not adhering. That’s not huge areas, but more like random spots from quarter size to several inches. And the steps off the back porch, which are more exposed and weathered than the other wood, really didn’t absorb well at all.

They should have soaked up the stain like a paper towel soaks up spilled water. The wood, once fully dried out from the pressure washings, was really dry and in need of treatment. No remnant of any previous coating was on it.

      Interestingly, if you
      use an English to
      Spanish translator
      tool, frozen custard
      translate to crema
      helada and when the
      process is reversed;
      the English version
      is ice cream. Frozen
      custard is not the same
      as ice cream. These
      bozos are at the wrong
      business if they truly
      desire some ice cream.

      Frozen custard is a
      uniquely tasty treat.

      These bozos and their
      agenda demands aren’t.

      Next, they’ll demand
      a tranny bathroom. 😉

      Did they make equal
      demands of the other
      local establishments?

Like I’ve posted before, this plan to infuse the US with Latino 3rd world has been in the works for some time. In the mid-50s while I was in elementary school in Florida, four years before Castro tossed Batista out and the state flooded with the monied and productive Cuban upperclass, the school was being pushed to make learning Spanish mandatory as Spanish immigration was expected to make speaking the language a ‘must’.
I couldn’t help wondering, even back then, why WE were supposed to learn Spanish and THEY didn’t have to learn the language of the country THEY’D voluntarily chosen to adopt. My grandparents had to learn English to pass the citizen test, they volunteered to come here and thry afopted the cilture, customs, laws and language for evetyday activities. What happed….now we come to ‘press one for English’ and municipal services bills sentnout in twenty different languages.
At some point we’ll probably see the DoJ and DoE mandate Spanish and Arabic language school courses so that the immigrants too lazy to learn the language of the country they are sponging off of won’t feel uncomfortable.
