That actually happened to us one time. We had a big old lovable Golden Retriever named Sam. He loved to swim in our pool, did it all the time, whenever he felt like a dip, whether we were home or not. He had an ongoing battle, and it was epic, with my husband and the wood fence. He always got out.

Anyhow, one day a very irate woman who lived a mile or so away came to the door and informed my son that he needed to come and get Sam out of her pool. Apparently in his travels he got hot. 😀

I know I have told this story to some of you before, but that is the same dog who decided to be a mama cat. We had a cat with a litter and she died just after the kittens were weaned, but still, they were little. Sam would gather them in, lay down, and they would curl up against his belly. As they grew, he would play with them by picking them up by the scruff and shaking them back and forth, toss them a few feet, and back they’d come.

He also taught them his favorite thing, swimming. He tossed them off the diving board, went in after them and used his nose to guide them to the edge and lift them out. In no time he would walk to the end of the diving board and jump in, followed one by one by all the kittens who went in right after him. They all had a great time.

Yes, our family has always had mentally unbalanced pets. They seem to fit in well with us. We have a policy of always letting the pups pick us, instead of us picking them, and we get what we deserve. 😀 😀 😀

LOL!!!! 😀 😀 😀 As a kid I had a Siamese cat named Sam – who LOVED water! He’d even jump into the tub with us at bathtime. If Momma didn’t have time for a wet cat, she had to shut the bathroom door. He was so great – loved road trips, too. When we’d stop at a burger joint, he’d hop out of the car and eat 1 raw burger patty and a cup of water – then he’d run potty and come back to hop in the car.
Reckon it’s the name “Sam??” 😀

I did not know this story and LOVE IT! Sounds like a great dog!

I remember one summer in Connecticut was so hot, our neighbors bought a small kiddie pool and filled it with water thinking their big golden Labrador would splash around to stay cool. The dog would take naps in the pool, her head resting on the edge. It was really REALLY hot that summer.

When our oldest son was a baby we bought our first Golden, never having known what water babies they were. That first summer my husband filled the kiddie pool, determined to bathe Clancy, and convinced he would hate it. He rummaged around the house a half hour or so looking for his leash, to hang on to him when he made a break for it, only to finally go back outside and find Clancy in the pool.

That dog was a really cool pet too. He was a big believer in conserving his energy, and always ate lying down. Once we went out to find him lying on his back and eating over his shoulder. But he always watched our son, and as gentle and loving as he was, he would never let anyone in the yard with him. He was a big, very dark reddish color, and the most beautiful Golden ever.

He used to sneak off to the creek a couple of miles down the road. He went there in the back of a pickup truck with my husband once, and after that, he knew the way and would make the trip whenever he saved up enough energy.

We have had three of the dogs, and my son has one who is nearing the end now. They have been a source of joy, and members of the family.

That looks just like Z. No pool here, justbthe lake, but anytime the water temp was above 60 he’d take any opportunity to go and lounge in it. The border collie’s just like that too, she goes outside in warm to hot weather she’s out in that lake. The other dogs have almost zero interest in the water but the shepherds can’t seem to resist it.

They’re supposed to shepherds and not water dogs. Possible they’re attempting to compensate fir an inability to herd sheep by herding fish. Darned sight easier than cats.

Yes, typical ‘hiya hiya’ BC face. “Gotta red bal, huh huh, huh? Ours was bouncing all over the living room when I put my boots on so I took her and the GGS to the feed store. I didn’t feel comfortable with her adorable self sitting in the outdoor eating area (she was practicing her ‘starving waif’ face in the rearview) so we took the bbq chicken baked beans and sausage jambalaya plates home. Whole way they were on the center console and she was in. The back seat, nose resting on the console about two inches from the plates, biggest hang-dog expression on her face.
Sidebar: Despite the free food everyone there was buying someting, even if only three-plant veggie or flower set, didn’t see anyone there just for the free food. The feed store didn’t set any ‘must buy’ restrictions nor did it even encourage you to buy, it was just free food ( really good free food) for anyone who stopped buy. Chicken was bbq’d on wood grills, jambalaya was homemade, free Coke products too. Business next door even helped by letting the overflow park in its lot. Oh, and everyone trying to navigate the store’s crowded lot, on foot or in vehicle, was polite and patient, most waved ‘hello’. This ain’t the city.

No. I like dogs and love hearing all these funny stories. And some sweet stories, too. On twitter there was a photo of a golden retriever with socks in his mouth. The linked story was sweet: the dog collects socks lying around the house and piles them near his bed — reminders of all the family members, which comforts him. The family was out except for the mother, and she received some bad news over the phone and sad down for a cry. Quietly, the dog brought all the socks from his bed and piled them near her — thinking that if they gave him comfort, it would give her comfort.

We love them, even had one set up a den under the corner of the house. Last spring I was driving down the driveway and there was this roiling blob of blsck and white rolling across the drive. Didn’t know what it was until I carefully drove up to it then saw it was a ball of skunk kits trying to move across the driveway without stopping playing.
Many years ago in Florida we were dispatched to a domestic call. When we got there we found out the problem was a dispute by the divorcing couple over ownership of their pet skunk, a descented, spayed sprayer the size of a couch cushion. The judge ordered the county to take custody so we took it to animal control where it spent most of the day wandering around the offices eating offered tidbits. Spent the night in a well-appointed, large cage the judge ordered.

  5. We have a Border Collie named Isla. She loves her bath! You just aim the hose and she gets herself all wet. You just soap her up and turn the hose back on and she’ll rinse herself off. The only thing she loves better is her Frisbee.
