Under the “believe it or not” column – if it wasn’t Dr. Batty’s, something similar was still around when I was little. My grandmother (same one with snakes in the outhouse, pickin’ cotton, etc.) made me “smoke” them when I was staying with her one summer and got sick. I’se about 5-ish. Awful, awful things. Like smoking a black glue stick.

How did we survive as a nation?
Don’t answer yet. Wait just a couple more years.
Either the pendulum will swing back toward sanity and Truth, or it’s cable is a billion miles tall, and the swing will continue toward absolute media mendacity coupled with absolute societal stupidity.
So far, it seems like the latter.
I have always posited that “it” started with “Father Knows Best” and TV.
I was wrong. “It” only shifted gears, upward, then.
It may have started with what we see in these print ads for Snake Oil, even before television.

This is actually a reply to your post below, about your grandmother, but there was no reply button there. My grandmother lived on a small farm in Alabama. Granddad was a sharecropper who saved enough to buy his own land and make a go of it. My mom grew up working the fields, picking cotton and peanuts and whatever else. My grandmother kept a shotgun by the door to shoot rattlers when they came into the yard. She was tough and no nonsense, but she never made me smoke Dr. Batty’s.

Go to the link I posted just above.
Lileks has been archiving these absolutely insane ads for years, and commenting on them.
A few years ago I spent several hours there, uncontrollably scrolling down. I just now remembered that site.
Browsing them serves as a further reminder of how absolutely insane our society is.
The ads worked. People believed that s***.
And here we are today.

I am so repelled by the Cruz and Rubio haters that I cannot get through posts with comments anywhere. Supporting any candidate, including Trump, does not me I have to act like the Obama supporters did.
They disgust me. Nothing but mudslinging and insults. No logic, no FDR sense of poking fun at both sides, no respect for anything. Giving them a sandbox to play in unsupervised and unchecked has just made it a ghetto.

Best advice ever. No one man can fix what is wrong. These people who are so invested in Trump are going to be let down even if he wins. As good as he could be, he cannot in one presidential term fix the broken world, not even our part of it.
We the people, by our sloth, mentally and physically, have allowed the growth of a monster, now almost unstoppable. Half of us won’t work, a big portion of the other half has worked hard but been too lazy to rein in the politicians feeding the sloth of the other halves and creating their own entitled aristocracy.
I think when people so rabidly support a candidate it is because they want that to end their civic duty. Have you seen some of the crazy comments about what “President Trump” will do his first 90 days? They actually think if he wins the world goes back to what we think of as normal. Astounding.
If he wins, the fight begins. It will be just the start of a long, hard road. I was young mother and wife when Ronald Reagan was elected. He said we had work to do, and things were going to get worse before turning around, if I remember those speeches right. They did. We stayed the course, but life was a real struggle.
Nowadays everyone wants to skip the struggle part. We all want a cowboy in a white hat to kill the bad guys for us, so we can come out of the shops and onto the streets again, all safe because of one man.
I say again that we are all complicit in what is wrong, and we will all need to work hard and yes, probably even make sacrifices, to fix our society. If we don’t address our societal ills, nothing about our leviathan government can ever be permanently addressed. Government has become a giant band aid covering a pus filled wound poorly.
Gee, sorry, nyet. I’m done now.

I know you’re right and I keep trying to talk some I know down because there is no way they’re going to get all they want. I keep trying to tell them we need Trump but we need him because he’s the only slim hope we have of stopping amnesty and giving us another day to fight.
Somehow we have to change the mindset of people. The people are why we’re where we’re at.

Nothing to be sorry about. But to disagree, regarding who’s at fault for the current situation; the average citizen is so far removed from effecting change and as a people we have been lied to, and misinformed since 20 years after the founding of the country, as well as progressively poorly educated for the last century.
Look at the situation with Trump. He is taking on an entrenched foe in fortified positions on high ground. Overwhelming numbers is the only way to win that situation. Iowa just proved to the GOPe that with enough massive cheating, they can defeat Trump. They will pull out all the stops now.
That is not our fault, that is the fault of the liars club that snuck into power well before any of us were born.

I both agree and disagree. I think long term the generations since our WWII forebears have increasingly abandoned our responsibilities. Yes, there is so much deception going on now that most have lived with it and don’t even know it. And I agree with you about it going all the way back to the early years of the country.
I just think each successive generation closed their eyes and squinted a little bit more than the previous ones, and starting after WWII we, as a society, concentrated more on the good life and instant gratification.
And I am no military strategist, but I think Trump has one other thing going for him. Surprise. He doesn’t follow the battle plan, and the element of surprise is a valued strategy. It’s like the British regiments facing the citizen soldiers bred in the woods of America. His refusal to follow the civilized dictates is a danger to them. But they do have all the high ground, tons on money, and lots of dirty bombs to use.
I also think they may be underestimating how many times they can serve people like me a steaming pile of poo and expect me to pick up a fork. It ain’t ever happening again.

“I just think each successive generation closed their eyes and squinted a little bit more than the previous ones, and starting after WWII we, as a society, concentrated more on the good life and instant gratification.”
We are not a hive mind collective. The whole generational psychology theory was created to divide families further. To isolate the children from listening to unenlightened parents.
The only difference between age groups is life experience and what they are taught. The people of ancient Rome were no different than we are as people in that respect.
The difference is/was Christian moral values and ethics. But Christian morals have been under attack since before we became a country. What you are describing is the result of that progressive removal morals in our society.
Restore Christian morals and everything else will come back to where it should be.

Let me put it this way. Does Trump have more voters (troops) than the GOPe has cheats (bullets). The “Element of Surprise” may be the only way Trump can win.

I rally doubt that Trump has more voters. When you cheat, usually you just keep on cheating until you win, otherwise, what was the point?
Restore Christian morals and everything else will come back to where it should be.
Agree. I think we are mostly in agreement on all of this nyet, but my Christian values tell me there is no out for individual responsibility, no matter the societal conditions. Your reasons are indeed accurate, I just think that means we did deeper. Each individual must form their conscience well and dig deep into the rocky soil of their own times, aiming to improve the crop yield for their own children and grandchildren.
I’m kind of making myself sick with my own similes, but I haven’t stopped myself yet. 😀

I firmly believe in individual responsibility as well. But that is a Christian moral/value/ethic.
The left/progressive/socialist teaches there is no God and that man must rely on man (especially whomever is in charge). If a person believes in that, there is not a lot you or I can do but shake your head in most cases. Some cow-kick-to-the-head event has to happen for people to wake up to the possibility that their life view may be flawed.
You or I didn’t know we were making something worse. In fact, we were told we were making things better. So were our parents, and their parents.
Who would willingly turn their children over to strangers with the understanding that your children would be taught to dismiss anything you tell them as superstition or archaic.
It’s almost another form of useless white guilt to personally take blame for Western society as a whole.
….
I had to go do something else, and now I don’t know where I was going with this.

I’ve always wondered: what is Our Winner (whoever it may be) going to actually DO to stop Black Peoples’ new fads, namely flash-robberies, flash-beatings, flash-killings, and the general mayhem, killing, stealing, and destroying they have lately been able to do without repercussion?
What is Trump going to do to stop them from doing these things all day every day?
What is Cruz, Rubio, or Bush going to do to stop it?
And that’s just ONE of a hundred things that we want to be stopped!
Ain’t. No. President. Gonna. Save. Us.
And Dems and GOPe want to actively kill us via said mayhem.
21 He that followeth after righteousness and mercy findeth life, righteousness, and honour.
Q: What President is going to convince America that that is true?
A: None. It’s come down to the human vs. human level at this point.

Good morning, everyone. As this election season progresses, let’s all try to be kind and polite to our fellow men. I am speaking to myself here too. Most of us, in other times and settings, are friends and allies. Calling names and insulting other conservatives (I’ve not seen it here, but on Facebook, at lucianne.com,and other places) isn’t helpful. I find myself staying away from other sites just because of the nastiness, and that isn’t good either.
I’m not talking about a legitimate discussion about candidates and policy differences, of course. I mean those who post insulting memes about your preferred candidate (or you!) and call others “liberals”, idiots, stupid (and so on).
Don’t take this as a lecture to anybody here, but as my general feelings this morning. As conservatives – and most Americans, generally – we have much more in common than we differ.
As Ronald Reagan said,
At the root of everything that we’re trying to accomplish is the belief that America has a mission. We are a nation of freedom, living under God, believing all citizens must have the opportunity to grow, create wealth, and build a better life for those who follow. If we live up to those moral values, we can keep the American dream alive for our children and our grandchildren, and America will remain mankind’s best hope. With your help, I know we can and we will.

I’m worried all the rabid-type supporters are going to sit this one out if their #1 Guy doesn’t get a nomination (substitute #1 Guy with whomever). If that happens, they will throw us all under the bus.
How can this be helped? What are the magic words? Because I fear we are going to end up with a Hill of beans or feeling the Bern because we can’t seem to get along with each other.

Hi, Les. You’re welcome here. We have some very thoughtful comments this morning, so I can see why you enjoy reading it!
As for your comments about the “rabid-type supporters”, I hope that doesn’t happen, but I’m sure that at least some will stay home if their #1 guy doesn’t win the nomination. I noticed that some are even criticizing SD this morning because he dared to say that Trump may have made a mistake by not campaigning in NH yesterday and today. Any candidate can make a mistake, and when it is your candidate you should be concerned if he makes a mistake. But that’s only my opinion.
Again, welcome.

Coyotes, even here. Out west we called ditches for rapid water drainage “arroyos” – they have ’em here, too. And when empty, the coyotes use them as highways to whatever part of town they wish to go. Spooky, really.

When I lived in Cal., every few months we would smell skunk at the front windows. Later, in the middle of the night it would work its way around to the back. There was a window fan in the window pulling cool air into the room. I woke up in the middle of the night, gagging and choking to the smell of skunk. Then, before I could get up and reverse the fan, I smelled poop. That darn skunk pooped right under the fan.

Menagerie,
Your situation brings back not so fond memories of past skunk encounters. We had a wonderful dog who just could not resist going after skunks, no matter how many times she got sprayed. We tried everything do deodorize her, all with limited success.
The worst skunk experience didn’t involve the dog at all, however. Many years ago, on a hot summer night, we were sound asleep when an odor so strong and overpowering permeated the house that the smell alone woke us up. Our throats burned, our eyes watered; I thought the house was burning down. All the windows were closed and we had the air conditioning on. A skunk had walked by the heat pump right as it turned on, and the sound startled it. It sprayed the heat pump, and the whole house was bathed in skunk. It took weeks to get the odor out of everything!

OMG. That is worse than my little story. At least I could air out the house. 😯

We had to wash every linen, shampoo carpets, wash clothes… and still the aroma lingered! Your story is pretty similar, though. I realize the odds of it happening again are pretty slim, but now I’m thinking about it. It happened once….

Well, your situation was definitely worse than mine! However, I refused to put the dogs out wet in the cold, plus the lab is recovering from a torn ACL and supposed to be kept inside and inactive. So, the house has some odor too, which I can’t help and will have to clean furniture and rugs after they are totally odor free.
Sometimes life stinks. 😀

My sister had a skunk get under her house. They couldn’t find it but in one of their searches they discovered one of their a/c ducts under the house had broke loose. Guess where the skunk was?
We took her a live trap and baited it with chicken eggs and caught it and the duct was repaired, but their house stunk for a week. The first few days so bad they had to go stay in a motel.
They are now careful about not leaving the crawl space door open, which was how it got under, the cable guy had forgotten to close it and it was open all day and night.

It’s never pleasant when they get sprayed by a skunk and nothing but time ever totally gets rid of the smell.
I just always use the skunk off these days because it does what all the other methods do with just one bath, but the hint of skunk lingers for days.
I’m just grateful that most of the time it’s the outside dogs who get sprayed, it’s much easier to live with their smell.

I saved that for last, hoping against hope that if I used the other two methods first, it would lessen things enough that that would finish it up for me. These are big dogs, outside dogs mainly, and I don’t bathe them enough that they tolerate it well, I confess. The whole day was horrible. Then my husband had a comment that set me off when he came in the door, and I tried to borrow nyet’s shovel.
Dammit, I may have to already go back to confession. But as of yet, I remain unrepentant.

It like the voiceover in “Goodfellas”
A lot of holes in the desert, and a lot of problems are buried in those holes. But you gotta do it right. I mean, you gotta have the hole already dug before you show up with a package in the trunk. Otherwise, you’re talking about a half-hour to forty-five minutes worth of digging. And who knows who’s gonna come along in that time? Pretty soon, you gotta dig a few more holes. You could be there all f***n’ night.

I have 14.33 heavily wooded acres. But I am surrounded by the outer edges of National Guard property. I think I could just slip under the fence, or around the areas with downed trees across it. That would be smarter.

The worst one I ever had was my pomeranian when he was about 2. All that hair to try and get the smell out of.
He always slept in bed with us but he spent about a week sleeping in the utility room.
I have to admit I couldn’t stand to bathe him, and got my husband to do it. All of his hair seemed to make the smell worse.

“Don’t try to build a new country… make the old one work. It has, for over 400 years.”
A very short time, when conservative propaganda was built into our TV shows.
Maybe it lasted 4 years.
The Twilight Zone originals were also very, very conservative.
I think before and after was all progressive propaganda.
I’m not opposed at all to propaganda. Another word for it is Rhetoric.
For most Westerners, Dialectic doesn’t work. Hence Ross Perot.
Rhetoric does. Hence Trump.
From Dragnet to Little House on the Prairie we had conservative rhetoric embedded into our TV shows. Okay, maybe from radio’s The Lone Ranger.

It was actually a conservative purge.

The article mentions staff urging to do more. Perhaps Trump knows the heads of state campaigns for him are turning out to be, in reality, plants and are subterfuging him. There were comments at cth about trying to get involved and no contact back from campaign state hdqtrs Or state leaders. They were frustrated. Now Trump supporters are seeing his ground game as unorganized and lacking. Like, hello, all of a sudden the master organizer cannot organize? Right. If this is the case it is more important than ever to just DO as individuals. Screw a campaign head and all the heirarchy and form Trump Bands ourselves and ACT.

Nobody is right all the time, facebkwallflower. Not even Trump. He is pretty successful, and has been right more often than not, but not always. Businesses of his haven’t panned out sometimes. I think Trump is very intelligent, and usually successful, but he is still a man, and men make mistakes. Successful men also listen, and any supporter worth his salt is concerned, and expresses that concern in a respectful way, when he sees something he thinks isn’t right. It is right to voice concern, and it is right to listen to respectful criticism.

Totally agree, Stella! The things you share were a given for me when I made earlier comment; maybe should have precluded with a disclaimer or something to convey not an all or nothing opinion. I do leave open, though, the possibily that the lacking ground game is not all from lack of organization alone but could be result of people against Trump jumping in leadership spots and conveniently not available. If this is the case, I am pretty sure Trump will let us know but then of course, he will called be a whiner and not owning up to his inadequacies.
I suspect Trump Team is weeding through advice and trying to discern friend from foe. I know when ‘lil ole me emailed with productive criticism and suggestion, he did it. (More than once) Now, I realize each time could have easily been councidence since I do not actually have an exclusively original idea in me.

Good morning Stellars,
Just read a small pamphlet that my son left for me, published by the Ayn Rand Center,
“Man’s Rights-The Nature of Government”. I believe it is an excerpt from her book “Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal” in 1946.
“Now consider the extent of the moral and political inversion in today’s prevalent view of government. Instead of being a protector of man’s rights, the government is becoming their most dangerous violator; instead of guarding freedom, the government is establishing slavery; instead of protecting men from the initiators of physical force, the government is initiating physical force and coercion in any manner and issue it pleases; instead of serving as the instrument of OBJECTIVITY in human relationships, the government is creating a deadly, subterranean reign of uncertainty and fear, by means of nonobjective laws whose interpretation is left to the arbitrary decisions of random bureaucrats; instead of protecting men from injury by whim, the government is arrogating to itself the power of unlimited whim — so that we are fast approaching the stage of the ultimate inversion; the stage where the government is FREE to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by PERMISSION, which is the stage of the darkest periods of human history, the stage of rule by brute force”.
This was written 70 years ago, and it does seem more so every day that we move closer to those dark days. As someone said here a few days ago, the Oregon standoff/shooting is just as important and goes hand in hand with who is going to be the next president. These, and a myriad of other issues. Trump may not be the whole enchilada, but in my opinion, is better than the rest being offered. As Sundance commented in his last Oregon topic, there is a fine line that needs to be navigated, so that tyranny nor anarchy is the status. But seems to me, that the current government/PTB are operating in both spheres at the same time. Being both unencumbered by what we the people want, vote and desire for, and to which they are supposedly constitutionally obligated, that they are the only true FREE. And by also imposing laws, convictions, labels, MSM propaganda, and all sorts of other manipulations, as TYRANTS as well.
Don’t want to be doom and gloom on this beautiful, wintery Caturday, but unfortunately for me, I am drawn to what is wrong, more so than what is right. Enjoy the weekend!

Twitter Suspended 125,000 Accounts For Terrorist Activity
On Friday, Twitter suspended over 125,000 accounts for terrorist activity. The site shut down the accounts for “threatening or promoting terrorist acts” mainly in the name of ISIS.
For a while, twitter and other social media have had to balance the freedom of speech with safety.
Unfortunately, there is not an easy way to tell what accounts are using the site for terroristic purposed, and it is easy for someone to make another account if one has been suspended.

Interesting point of view.
https://intellectualfroglegs.com/trump-not-a-liberal-or-a-conservative-but-a-pragmatist/
We recently enjoyed a belated holiday dinner at the home of friends. The dinner conversation was jocund, ranging from discussions about antique glass and china to theology and politics. At one point reference was made to Donald Trump being a conservative, to which I responded that Trump is not a conservative.
I said that neither does Trump view himself as a conservative. I stated it was my opinion that Trump is a pragmatist. He sees a problem and understands it must be fixed. He then sets about fixing it. He doesn’t see the problem as liberal or conservative; he sees it only as a problem. That is a quality that should be admired and applauded, not condemned. But I get ahead of myself.

I just read 1984, I’m 56. At the time way back when, I didn’t choose to know more about Big Brother. I thought I already knew. But reading it now, in these days, WOW!
My son, whom is 17, gave it to me for my birthday, saying on his inscription that it is one of his favorite books, has helped in opening my eyes. He is/was a Rand Paul supporter and is a Libertarian. Also have a Trump guy in my eldest son, a Bernie in my oldest daughter, and the youngest, at 14, thank God is pure and not yet corrupted.
I read Atlas Shrugged way back when as well, and am going to reread, with a “well travelled” mind, and see what I can gleam. Was impressed back then, surely more so today.

Speaking from experience, limit (without ever saying anything) extended alone time between older daughter and young one. No need to demean liberal daughter to younger daughter but liberal big sissies are trained to “rescue” conservative girls/sisters from their parents. There are ways to do protect the younger sibs without destroying their sister bond. You don’twant to lose either one. Both need you and your love.
