Mornin’ sir. No, not yet. Jan 7th in the Gregorian calendar is December 24th in the Julian calendar.

For a long time, this was my poison of choice. Now it’s an occasional treat.
I’m going to leave my tree up for a while yet. I have a new one this year, and it looks particularly cheerful during these dark days of winter.

Good morning to all of you! It’s difficult to recognize the morning when it is still pitch dark at 7:00 am, but the dog and cat aren’t fooled.
It’s the beginning of another week, and the slate is clean.

Morning Stella, we received an 1″ of snow overnight. To me Christmas is not one day, it’s everyday!! Leave your Tree up!

No snow here, Colonel. The tree is a very cheerful sight, so I will continue to enjoy it until I don’t. I’ll keep the curtains closed now, so the neighbors don’t think I’m nuts, though.

Nyet I was going to comment on your “In the Heart of the Sea” post yesterday but I kept getting caught up in other things.
The conversation between the captain and first mate reminded me of a conversation I had with my sister who is an atheist. You know the type with the Darwin footed fish eating the Christian fish on the back of her car 🙄 . The kind who when she is a guest at someone’s home and the host says, “Let’s join hands and say grace,” before a meal thinks she needs to say no I won’t pray to a pretend God, rather than graciously holding hands and just not praying. (At which point my husband told her that’s ok but please be quiet during the prayer or go wait outside”
Anyhow, I have brought a fews people around to acknowledging the possibility of a creator since they can’t come up with a better first cause. I find most “atheists” are agnostic when their beliefs are questioned.
After many conversations I believe that true atheists believe that man created God rather than the other way of around. that said I have no problem with atheists. Atheists, true atheists can be rather interesting.
I have a friend who is agnostic, a very, very good friend, she believes there is a god, but no afterlife, she has a very high IQ and is fascinating to talk to about all matters.

My daughter isn’t an atheist, although she has been questioning for some time. She was raised to attend church every Sunday, and attended a Baptist school through 7th grade. She knows her Bible better than most.
Her husband is a Catholic, and both boys were baptized as Catholics, although neither of them has attended religious education classes, and the family only attended mass on Easter and Christmas.
She told me at Christmas that they are attending services at the Unitarian Church in her town, and that my younger grandson is enjoying religion classes (or Sunday School; I’m not completely clear on this).
I’m glad that they are seeking their own path. I don’t think she ever gave up belief in God (she would ask me to pray from time to time), and I’m not sure either that she has taken up Unitarianism as a religion.

My own thinking about this is that she is disappointed with “religious” people, and not with personal beliefs.

I believe this is true of most people. They have been disappointed with religious people. I understand that disappointment.
The harder case is those people who are disappointed with God, so disappointed that they believe a “loving” god cannot possibly exist.
Years ago I had a month long conversation with a chap on a public board he was an adamant atheist, he then emailed me privately one day and said that he didn’t want it it be public knowledge but he had a very young son who suffered and died and there was nothing anyone could ever say to convince him that there was a loving god. We had some more conversations but his pain was too much for me to get through on a computer screen and in my heart I understood his need for his disbelief.
My daughter is agnostic teetering on atheist due to a personal life experience, but she does ask for prayers and even prayed for me during a very dedicate surgery, “Just in case”.

We never know the impression we have made on others. Like I said in my latest post this morning, often our words touch another’s mind or heart, even though we will never know that. Perhaps the chap you spoke with took some of what you said and pondered it. In any case, all we can do is try! Just the fact that we gave our daughters a grounding, and that they are surrounded by believers, gives them a head start. My mother had a profound influence on my daughter, and that influence will never leave her.

This is a letter my daughter wrote to my mother for her 90th birthday; it was published in a special birthday book.
When I was a teenager, I remember Grandma used to say, “You never listen to me!” But Gram, you were wrong. I listened, and I watched and learned; and I believe that there’s a little magic piece of you inside me.
I know it’s that little piece that makes me stop on my walk to the train in the morning to watch the rest of the sunrise, or pull over to the side of the road to pick up a fall leaf or smell the lilacs in the Spring. Grandma, you used to cut fruit apart to show me the beautiful patterns inside. You watered the plants and told me to listen to them drink. You brushed the dirt off vegetables in the garden and bit into them, telling me to taste their goodness. You see beauty and magic everywhere. I believe you see God all the time, in all the good and lovely things of earth.
Gram, I hope you know how rich my life is and what wonderful memories I have because you were there for me. What a lucky child I was to have a grandmother with an endless supply of “rainy day” projects and your bottomless scrap bags and boxes full of fabric, felt, sequins, buttons, construction paper, papier mache, modeling clay, paints and brushes! You were always thinking of Kevin and me, planning special treats and activities for us. And you always, always had time to listen to my childish thoughts and ideas. Maybe I was “spoiled” as a child, but I think it’s great that you made me feel like the most important person in the world.
Even now, I feel your unconditional love and your prayers for me every day. When I can’t sleep, I hear your voice: “Think quiet thoughts.” When I’ve messed up, I remember your wise, “What’s done is done.” Most important I remember your “I Love you.” Thank you for all you have given to me.

When my daughter was a senior in high school she was working on a 10 – 15 page paper, it was all done, other than tweaking. I heard tap, tap, tap, TAP, TAP, TAP, thwap, twap, thwap, Thump, so I look and her head is on the keep board.
“Problem?” I tentatively ask my type A perfectionist daughter.
“It’s gone, just gone.” comes the tearful response.
“Are you sure” the silly me asks.
Loud sobs come form the child.
She stayed up all night redoing it. After that event even while she was in college she emailed me a copy of her papers as she was working on them and remembered to save each draft as a separate paper.

Any thoughts on the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge situation? Ammon Bundy holding a press conference on Fox right now.

I’m not sure about the Bundy involvement, but I certainly sympathize with that family. If you ask me, the resentencing was illegal.

The re-sentecning was illegal IMO. The whole thing from what I have read has been about the Feds getting their hands on Hammond land. The Feds built fences to keep the Hammond’s from accessing their own land and water. the fences were deemed illegal by local courts.
The press conference was cut short, no one is covering it. They let the evil racist rants of the Black Lives Matter spew all over the “news” but Aamon Bundy starts talking about the Constitution and a woman starts to read off a list of people who are aware of the unconstitutional actions of the Federal Government and it gets cut off.

Yes – the double indemnity thing PLUS the excessive fine involved. No way common working stiffs can come up with $400,000.00. I couldn’t, anyway – and damned sure couldn’t work it off from a jail cell.

And, a few commenters make the point that this is NOT federal land – it is public land. Does that mean state-owned or no difference?
LikeLiked by 3 people
It matters whether it’s state or federal (or private) I would imagine. The first burn was on private land, but also burned some federal land. The Hammonds put out the fire themselves. The second burn was on private property except for ONE ACRE of federal property.

BUNDY PRESS CONFERENCE
Ammon Bunsy’s group has given itself a name; Citizens for Constitutional Freedom. Their goal is to restore and defend the Constitution of the united States.
From Bundy’s press conference;
Because we have allowed our Federal government to step outside the bounds of the Constitution they have come down upon the people and are prosecuting them now directly. they are coming down into the states and taking over the land and resources putting the people into duress, putting the people into poverty and putting entire counties and entire states into undue obedience.
Notice of redress of grievance to give you a little background we have spent several weeks, two months to be exact in petitioning the state and the local county representatives to stand for the Hammond’s against these unconstitutional actions. And we have done this through petitions, we have done this through contacts by emails, we know that the sheriff has received thousands of emails, we also know that the county representatives and the state representatives have received thousands of emails, and to no avail, that they have been ignored, to the point where they have not even responded back at all.
I myself and along with many other organizations and influential people have contacted these representatives and the county sheriff asking them to get involved. And all we have been asking from the very beginning is that they put together an evidential hearing board, to look at the evidences, to look at the, uh, uh, the accusations that are set forth and to look at the abuses that the Hammond’s have been experiencing. They have refused in very case. the notice redress of deep grievance was our final attempt to get them to act. And this was a legal notice that was delivered to the county sheriff and county representative and state representatives.
This article includes some if not the entire body of the Redress of Grievance;
http://www.naturalnews.com/052325_Hammond_Ranch_redress_of_grievances_unlawful_actions.html#
“After extensive research on the Hammond case, We the People of these States United have reason to believe that Dwight and Steven Hammond were not afforded their rights to due process as protected by the United States Constitution,” begins the redress, which was sent to Sheriff David Ward, Commissioner Dan Nichols, Commissioner Pete Runnels, Justice of the Peace Donna Thomas, District Attorney Tim Colahan, Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum and Gov. Kate Brown.
“We have principled evidence that Dwight and Steven Hammond committed no crime in the act of performing the prescribed burn and back fire, that the U.S. Government does not have authority to enforce Territorial law under article four within the State of Oregon, and that the County of Harney and State of Oregon failed to protect the Hammond’s rights as guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. USC 42.1986, 18.242, 18.121, 42.1983, 42.1985,” the redress says.
In particular:
“We hold compelling evidence that the U.S. Government abused the federal court system, situating the Hammond family into duress as effort to force the Hammond’s to sell their Steen Mountain property to a federal agency.”
“We have substantial evidence that the U.S. Attorney’s Office exploited an act of Congress, imposing cruel and unusual punishment upon residents of Harney County.”
“We hold substantial evidence that inside the borders of Harney County the U.S. Government is acting outside the authority enumerated in the Constitution of the United States.”
“We secure evidence that the U.S. Attorney’s Office independently prepared the indictment against Dwight & Steven Hammond, and that the Grand Jury did not properly assemble or investigate before the indictment. We have no evidence to believe that the Grand Jury participated in the indictment altogether.”
“We have sure evidence that U.S. Congress does not have authority to legislate minimum sentences, requiring Dwight and Steven Hammond to serve five years in a federal penitentiary.”
“We hold confirming video evidence of federal agents exhibiting a culture of intimidation toward individuals and businesses within the borders of Harney County. That federal agent, by fire destroy private property, and that the Hammond family are being denied the same protection of the laws that are enjoyed by federal agents.”
Food for thought.
