Okay, reviewed thread: PZ is correct, little events in your AO, and in the bigger AO are happening. We are being baited, and “they” are looking at our response. What is our response; more maneuver forces committed to the AO, more SIGNET, cyber security, more patrols. Now consider local or national social events, overblown media coverage, economic value targets thrown into the mix. We are focused out, our focus should be inward (area of influence) and outward focus is area of interest.
Yes PZ it’s on the reading rack. I just have to get out of the weeds of operational art of war and re learn some new/old tenets of warfare.

What is old is new again. Warfare never goes out of style. 4th Gen is like fur loin cloths and shilleighlies in a world of powder blue ruffle front tuxes, patent white shoes and pink champagne.
All the technology in the world will not help us when they walk up to one’s billet in base housing and take care of what they came for while morning eggs and coffee are consumed.
Real world example of this concept in action:
            http://www.deseretnews.com/article/38423/FBI-PROBES-IRANIAN-GROUP-IN-VAN-BOMBING-INCIDENT.html?pg=all
This happened. What is past, unfortunately is probably prologue. Stay sharp. This sort of stuff intrudes on my sleep from time to time.

Nyet, Thank you. Mornings here at the world HQ are pretty quiet, save for the labored rattling of pairs of lungs and the slow drip of coffee. I might get some bacon out for tomorrow, no way to start a day like being a Kaffir unbeliever, snacking on tasty bacon!

Col Hammes talks about a “small community” of writers exploring 4GW; other than Lind who else is writing on this topic?

I found my old copy of the Colonel’s book “The Sling and the Stone” last night in an attempt to dive back into the theory. I was introduced to the theory back in the late 90’s while at Norwich, but haven’t stayed up with it since. And honestly, it was one of those things at the time, I didn’t think I’d ever encounter; so down the memory hole of ‘null’. Like you said, “What is past, unfortunately is probably prologue.” It’s biting me in the butt now.

Are there any current periodicals writing on this topic other than say YTZ at his blog? I found one of Hammes articles from the Military Review – 2007, where he proposes 4GW was possibly evolving into a 5GW.

You three (PZ, Zig, and the Col.) probably know about Castalia House, the relatively new book publisher. If not, it’s up your alley, in it’s nonfiction offerings. Lots of stuff on 4GW.

Vox Day’s blog (Vox Popoli), and the commentariat, would probably fire your neurons up, too, on subjects related to this. (He has Science Fiction/Fantasy as a major topic too, along with game design and even occasionally, Futbol and martial arts.)

By the by, YTZ is a gal.
The domestic authors I’s steer you to would be John Poole, and John Poole. You can find references of some of his works at: http://www.stopshouting.blogspot.com

The Hammes article is excellent. I do caution that the view of we can’t kill our way out of a war is misguided. Like Communism, it just has not been properly tried yet.

My views on the use of “soft power” as espoused by many wanna be T.E. Lawrences is that it makes the practitioner feel better, and is a form of virtue signalling.

In my experience, it does not help. They still want to kill you… that is, if you are EFFECTIVE. They will humor and fan the vanities of many dolts with brass on the collar. While the American feels validated, they always somehow end up fleecing you.

Maybe that is something I did not understand, that money as a weapons system thing. I never saw anything tangible for it. The place remained a hole after I left, it is still a hole, and I suspect it will be 1,000 years hence.

Don’t get me wrong, I do have much compassion for some of the people caught up in it. I stayed in touch with 2 interpreters who served us there. I wrote resumes for one of them.

Anyhow… I am scheduled to write a number of articles on 4GW over at http://www.stopshouting.blogspot.com The management there humors me, and the benefits package is 1st rate.

Good morning. Now I’m going back to bed. It’s 35 degrees here, which feels like sub zero blizzard weather after having temps in the sixties and seventies almost all winter. Supposed to be below thirty tonight. I was all set for a global warming winter.

    Speaking of paying attention to the larger picture ;

In his meeting with the columnists, Mr. Obama indicated that he did not see enough cable television to fully appreciate the anxiety after the attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, and made clear that he plans to step up his public arguments.

    http://thefederalist.com/2015/12/18/the-new-york-times-just-memory-holed-this-devastating-obama-admission/

Obama has decided to fundamentally transform America. Obama has fundamentally transformed America. So much so that Obama doe not even hide the fact that he does not give a damn that Paris and America were attacked by Muslims. It is for all intensive purposes unimportant to him.

Transforming America into a third world country is the goal.
