Way back long before Google Earth the first US ‘private’ photo satellite company did a ‘just after’ and ‘dry’ series of hi-res photos of the Carolinas after a particularly wet hurricane hit. Provided the first real-world flood maps based on actual flooding.
Not slamming my bosses…OK, a little…but DOD/NRO could have done that years before. In their defense, there were a lot of nude beaches around the world that ate up a lotta hi-res satellite time…
Just spoke with my Mom. They’re driving up to her brother’s in GA, and are about an hour from their destination.
Their place is in Lake County, just SWW of Daytona Beach, so they’re gettin’ while the gettin’s good.
Maybe I’ll spend a couple months down there this winter helping out, we’ll see.
I pray the damage is minimal, and that their lake gets some water in it, for a change. It’s be nice to walk to the end of the dock, look down, and see actual water.
I can here the music, smell and taste the bratwurst (brats) cooking, and drink good tasting beer…… you know what the best part is???? Watching these ladies carry those mugs!! It’s art!!! A symphony of movement, music, tastes, and good beer!!!! Thanks Impeach, memories of my youth…..
How about thosectent walls of roasting chickens and other meats? I still have a couple of the large glass mugs from the Fest, don’t have to get up as often during sit breaks.
It’s a matter of ‘economy of scale’, Bernatd can carry a liter of Everclear and more than equal the raw amount of alcohol she’s carrying without wasting time with all of that foamy water stuff.
That picture reminds me of a pub I visited…..a couple of times, in NYNY, the city so nice they named it twice. McSorley’s pub. Apparently, back in the day, it used to be a hangout for literary types. They brewed their own cerveza and put ’em in small mugs. If you only ordered one at a time, the barmaid would grab ya’z by the scruff of the neck and axe you to leave…..and don’t come back.
I never did get to Walmart to get a grill. So, probably no hot breakfast until power comes back on if it goes out. I plan to fill the tub with water. Of course, it is on the second floor. 😦 Don’t know what kind of problem that might cause if things get really hinky. I have canned goods that can be eaten without heating. My comfy chairs and couch are near the 8′ sliding glass doors. {sigh} The two safe spaces are the downstairs 1/2 bath that barely holds the toilet and sink and the landing at the top of the stairs.
How about a bag of charcoal?
Dig a small hole and put in
some for a home made grill.
Use some aluminum foil as
grill and place frying pan or
pot to cook up a warm meal.
Nope, not happening. Mgmt put a notice on the doors last night saying essentially “Yer on yer own, suckers.” It was a full page saying you couldn’t put up plywood, or anything else. And, they can’t afford to do it. Their suggestion is to wrap your electrical equipment in plastic.
Yeah. And, my friend who has lived here all her life has been through a couple with outages for more than two or three days. She has been giving me advice. I bought a battery operated 10″ fan. She said that was the thing she needed the most, after water.
LOL With it not being cold here, a hot meal doesn’t mean as much as something cold to drink. That is what I will want. I can fill a cooler, but the ice might not last more than a few days, if that. Right now it is 80* and 90% humidity. Supposed to go up to 90* today. There might be a slight drop in Temps after the hurricane passes.
Try freezing you some water. I read on FB a lady who fills milk jugs and other containers with water and puts them in the freezer and then she has cold water to drink for a few days with no power.
My freezer is about the size of 4 shoeboxes. HOwever, I do have an icemaker, and I am going to fill my cooler with ice and remake some. I also, have small bottles of water that I can freeze. Glad you said that, I had forgotten. I’ma gonna do it right now. 🙂
Outra reply space on other thread. Might also want to oook at a solar cellphone charger. I used my truck to recharge but in the house I just left the cell plugged on to the charger and the charger in the window. Cell towers stood during Katrina and lasted until their generators ran out of fuel. Cell companies can, and did during Katrina, bring in portable cell links but remember the 1st responders will be using cells almost exclusively. I also keep a CB radio and GMRS radio handset for emergencies.
I couldn’t see winding up a radio to lusten to connercials for storm shutters and pols telling me, from their posh bunkers, how ‘we’re all going to get thru this together’. I gotta truck load of rechargable batteries I charge up/top off a few days before the storm. We are getting a whole-house generator we’ll use intermittently in the day to maintain the AC and freezers, our stove’s propane and we have solar chargers to recharge the batteries during the day. I’ll be too busy drinking to wind anything.
This is the one I bought. One charge allowed me to jump start the car twice with a dead battery, and I still had plenty of charge left. You can also use it to inflate tires.
I have a comination crank, solar, battery radio that charges cell phones too. I also bought a 1100 watt inverter that I can hook to a car battery and generate 110v household current.
Problem is, if I lose power, I will probably lose my internet, too. I am charging up this laptop and a little notebook I have. My cell phone is already charged.
You are not alone. My son is in your neck of the woods, I am about an hour east of you. But if you need help and can get a message here, I can call son If I don’t lose internet and if my cell stays charged. Will keep checking here for as long as I can, so holler if ya need help.
I’m hoping it’s not as bad as they are predicting. There is a lot of talk/hype though, even in our neck of the woods the hurricane and clowns are all they can talk about on the news.
It is very pleasant out tonight. The air is very comfortably warm, still high humidity, slight breeze and still raining lightly as it has been for hours. I am getting tired. I think I will go to bed. I don’t sleep very soundly, so I am not worried if things pick up later. I am sure it will wake me up.
Morning. Nope, got power. It never went off. I don’t think the winds got up bad enough for it to be a problem. When I took my dog out before we went to bed, it was actually beautiful, a little breezy, raining a little, and cooler (meaning it was probably in the low 70’s) than usual. This morning it is very breezy, 77* with 100% humidity. Actually a really nice day, although most Floridians would probably disagree since the sun is not shining brightly. LOL
That’s good.
It sounds like we got more weather last night than you did. It woke me up about 1:30. Wind was blowing, thunder and lightning and lots of rain. It brought cooler weather with it, only supposed to get into the mid 60’s today.
Good mornin’ Nyet,
Very nice and sensible breakfast this morning, cutting back on serving sizes is what I’m implementing myself. Thanks for the help! You have a great day up north.
Looks like Matt will come up towards Charleston and head out to sea… But Florida, please be careful. There is no telling now… Sunny and 78 here in N. Georgia… the weather has been made to order here….
Dear university research team members in the year 2021 looking for proof of time travel on the Internet;
This is proof…… that you’re an idiot. Go get a job and stop wasting your parents money.
We were up on the I-10 a few days before Katrina and it was a steady parade of power crews with flatbeds full of spools of wire, transformers, poles and other equipment. It was and still is an impressive memory watching that army of crews moving in as the residents moved out.
How great is Hillary’s campaign–she’s running ads for Fla voters on the weather channel. Of course, her intended audience will probably not have power to view them.
On the Twitter I said “It’s not rocket surgery.” Some sweet soul messaged me that it was brain surgery and rocket science and he was just letting me know so that people wouldn’t make fun of me 🙃.
No, this is a carport in an apartment complex. An apt mgmt built with no insulation in the walls and no flashing over the windows (which allows it to rain on the inside of the windows and sliding glass doors when the wind blows). Then end of the carport is stacked block (I am sure there is no rebar in there and a flimsy wood back and roof. I have noticed that the 2×4’s for support are rotting where they touch the dirt. 🙂

Just talked to my retired Miami cop buddy, he’s gonna stay and ride this out. He has at least a week’s supply of booze, Spam and ammo so he’s good. He was there working the streets for Andrew so this one’s a piece of cake.
He called again to tell me that his area ofvMiami is dead silent; no insect sounds, not a bird in sight. Street traffic is almost nonexistent, all reminiscent of Andrew.
On a different tack…
Everyone getting tired of Kim Kardashian’s yet another life drama? She slithers around Oaris, looking much like that Msrtian female in ‘Mars Attacks’, letting the mere mortal mouthbreathers know in sooooo many ways they aren’t worthy to lick the ground she walks on. She wriggles down the street leaving a designer-crafted slime trail in her wake, waving her $4-million engagement ring around as if to let the scum who worships her that the ring on her finger’s worth more than they and their combined families will ever be worth.
Then, when her ring and the ~6 milion in miscellaneous knock-around jewelery she carries with gets syolen we’re supposed to shed tears. Anyone taking up a collection?
If there ever were a natural born fadt food clerk that fell into wealth, she’s it. Even her private clothing designer blasted her ostentatious ‘in yo face’ display of wealth. I have no sympathy for her, karma’s real and is a bitch. Perhaps developing some humility and basic human respect might go a long way for her.
BTW, wonder if in an attempt to attract younger voters Hellary might have stumbled at the 911 event as she injured herself trying to walk like Kim? They both slither, Hellary just has to learn to adjust her gait.
I really question ‘roughed up’, the team was pro and in the ibterview post-robbery her makeup was perfect. I’m betting she has a different definition of ‘roughed up’ than we do. I suggest she wants to find out what roughed up is, she go be wavin’ dat bling ’round da Chesterfield Square area in LA da way she be doin it in Paris,
There should be a coffe pot here, but photobucket is all jacked up. 🙄

Fill the bath tub with water.

Those frozen bottles also help keep your food from going bad as quickly, just don’t overfill them before you put them in the freezer (don’t ask…). There’s also: http://www.batteryjunction.com/wagantech-2260.html?gclid=CLaKmoGzxs8CFVc2aQodid4JJw I have one of these in-car coolers as it provides a cold drink when you need it most.

Keeps the water covered, kerps it from evaporating and adding humidity to the house and keeps dust, insects and house pets from falling in.

LOL
