A little bit of history…the very first job I had in Los Angeles (1963) was in the real estate department at Humble Oil and Gas, a subsidiary of Standard of Jersey, now known as EXXON. Two people were assigned to proofread all documents having to do with purchases–the typist and another support staff member. At the time it was not legally acceptable to erase or use white correction fluid on the original and two carbon copies for any submission to the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s office. Xeroxing wasn’t allowed either. IF there was a mistake, the entire document had to be retyped. I was a really good typist in those days. LOL!

Hahaha! The company had just purchased a slew of IBM electric typewriters and I loved mine. No jerkiness like some of the other electrics. Just smooth flow and that made typing accuracy much easier.

I hear that, Lucille! I’ve always sensed we had a lot in common (esp. proofreading), but now I know why. I was a math-science major but took shorthand and typing in HS. In 1964 I worked as a ‘Sunny Girl’ typist – master + 6 cc’s – at Hughes Aircraft in Santa Monica. Eventually moved to ‘Kelly Girl’ with many variying positions and plenty of OTJ training: typing numbers only on a legal size paper in landscape orientation, using a 10-key machine to sum up huge green-bar reports and operating a switchboard. Later department secretary at two Calif colleges taking dictation by shorthand and typing letters. Learned a lot of valuable skills I’ve used throughout my career.

Sounds like we had similar training and experience! I still use shorthand to take notes for myself, and am happy that my “touch typing” skills haven’t rusted. I got my switchboard training at Illinois Bell Telephone, and could still operate an old cord and key switchboard if it ever became necessary.

I started in high school running the cord switchboard in the office for two years during free period. Got secretarial skills there, too. Made some money while in college and between semesters in fill-in jobs for Kelly and Southern Bell.

Kelly was great if you were looking for a job but wanted to try it out first; many employers used it as a non-commited interviewing opportunity. I got more than one job offer but never accepted because I wanted to be ‘free.’
Once you got accustomed to learning new jobs all the time, Kelly days were good, simple and interesting.

Good day, weather! Yes, I remember Kelly Girl….and Hughes Aircraft…and shorthand. I learned Gregg and still use it on occasion, especially the “brief forms.”
Working for Humble Oil was one of the best personnel-wise. All the executives were from Houston and good old boys and girls, one of whom became a lifelong friend. I was in contact with him and his family until the late-90s when he passed away.
The only reason I left Humble was a friend of mine who worked for Universal Studios told me they had some entry-level positions open and she would recommend me to the HR department. And that sounded too interesting to pass up. There I started out in the “steno pool” typing scripts. You had to adhere to a set format of tabs and paragraphing and learning that was fun. Getting to read the scripts before they went to production was also. No interaction with producers, directors, writers or actors, though. When positions to work those types of jobs came up, the head of the steno pool would send various typists for interviews.
I was in the steno pool for two weeks before I went to work for a contract film producer who ended up producing nothing and left after a year. Then it was on to a film writer who also left when his contract was up. We remained friends and I worked with him on outside projects on my own time. Finally, I ended up working for the head of TV casting and remained in casting throughout the 1970s. Lots of perks to that job.

Without the dark skin pigmentation for camouflage, it is rare for these animals to survive in the wild. Hatchlings would find it difficult to keep themselves hidden in the dark swamp. They may be able to elude their natural predators for a few days or even weeks. But because of their pale color, they are easy prey.

On Blue Bloods, the woke group was tipped of that the grandfather was leaving a restaurant and they went and protested at him, so the guy that did the tipping off was later protested by a conservative group who were tipped of that he was eating dinner by the Police Commissioner Great tactic. We should use it, except that those woke idiots carry weapons, etc.

Afternoon All. It is almost 50* and mostly sunny here. I didn’t get up until after 9:30 because I was binge watching Blue Bloods last night and didn’t go to bed until 1:00. Then, I dropped right off to sleep. The night before I couldn’t go to sleep until about 3:00 AM and I really hate that. I will be glad when I get back on my normal routine.
Much, much better this morning. I had some Top Ramen chicken soup for dinner and some peanut butter on soda crackers. I did fine. So, the plan today is to eat a little more and do more cleaning and get things ready to go to the laundromat. I didn’t go to church because I was afraid of getting overtired and passing out or something. Passing out and falling and hitting my head would be really bad.
Hope the rest of you are healthy and stay well.
