“Too Beautiful For Words” – Russ Columbo | Love Song for Carole Lombard | 1934
I’m a goner for star-crossed lovers stories…
Russ Columbo was an orchestra leader, vocalist, pianist, violinist, guitarist and accordionist. He had his own radio program out of Hollywood’s Roosevelt Hotel and also performed in Los Angeles night clubs. Columbo co-wrote this song for Carole Lombard. At age 26 in September 1934 he was killed in a gun accident.
Lombard was also 26 at the time of their relationship and a rising star. In 1937 she became the highest-paid actress in Hollywood. She married Clark Gable in 1939, but close friends knew she never stopped loving Columbo. She died in a plane crash along with her mother after selling bonds for the war effort in January 1942.
Gable gave up his career and joined the U. S. Army Air Force (1942-1947). Stationed in England, he saw combat on five missions. He died in 1961 at age 59 after completing principal photography on THE MISFITS co-starring Marilyn Monroe.

I never knew all of that. How tragic!

Interestingly enough, Bing Crosby was one of the pall bearers at Columbo’s funeral. They were friendly rivals with Columbo sometimes beating Crosby in popularity. Columbo was a child prodigy who could learn every instrument he attempted, super charming and handsome. Here’s a clip from “Broadway Through A Keyhole” (1933)…
Carole Lombard was actually taking instruction in the Catholic Church in anticipation of her engagement to Columbo. They attended the Church of the Blessed Sacrament on Sunset Boulevard which was the parish church of many Catholics in Hollywood, including Crosby. The church is still in the same location, too.
One mistake in my post…Gable died in 1960, not 61. Another interesting factoid, Gable was great friends with Hattie MacDaniel, the woman who played Mammy in GONE WITH THE WIND, for which she won the first Academy Award given to a person of her race.

When he was in town he spent nearly every Sunday morning having breakfast at her home with other invited guests, both white and black, occasionally including Bing Crosby.

Mornin’ Lucille and All. Not as miserable here as yesterday. After we got back from our morning walk and had breakfast I felt weird and sick to my stomach. I had to lay down for a while and then felt better. Don’t feel that way today. Loki is taking her pill now. I put it in peanut butter, but she won’t take it off the spoon. I have to put it in my hand and then the just licks it all up. I did get her to eat her breakfast this morning. She really likes these chicken ball treats. So, they help a lot. I have two phones, a home phone (which is the one I like to use and give out the number to) and a cell phone that I get calls and texts from people I don’t even know or care about. I just realized that I have to go through my accounts and delete the home phone from them and put in the cell number. Another job for today. At least for the bank, Amazon, and a few other websites because I might not be able to get on them if I don’t do that.
Well, hope you have a great weekend.

Good day to you, aus! Packing/moving is stressful. It’s no wonder you’re having tummy problems. I keep Alka-Seltzer products at the ready all the time.
Glad Loki is doing better. Our precious pets pick up on our emotions. They love us and are sympathetic to our distress, large or small.
Take care!

G’day, Commander WeeWeed! Good one!
God bless Justice Thomas and the other courageous justices on this moral and Constitutional decision. We can see how the opposition is devoted to the destruction of America, all the while trying to make it seem that they are the righteous ones. Amazing disconnect from reality.

Afternoon Wee, and everyone!
Yes, the UNITED states called a ‘republic’ because the power remains in the individual states and not the Federal government!

Need that. Woke up at 6:10 a.m.: gonna be a long day with no nap time. Naps are a good Southern tradition, especially to get through the hot afternoons. Today I’ll be in the too-cold hospital air conditioning all day. Have a great day all ya’all!

I did read the whole thing, and it was very well written and I hope it will come true. My worry is that every poll will not have a poll watcher from the Republican Party, and every poll watcher will not follow the box of votes to the counting station and keep watch until they are correctly counted and recorded. I don’t know if there is any such plan in place, with central coordination to keep everyone honest. But I fear the thieves have been so successful that elections will never be honest again.

Stella, czarina, All,
Thank you so much for the kind words last week. my personal week from hell continues, but it must needs end eventually, yes?
DIL drove up last Sun night to take me for tests – they are cutting off the (R) knee and picking out the pieces on Tues, the 28th. DIL brought (my) Son with her, and they spent nearly the entire week (last week) spring cleaning my house – washing walls, cleaning carpets, throwing out things they felt i didn’t need – sounds wonderful, yes? – while telling me what a lazy, worthless, no-good burdensome POS i am. Wed DIL was on me for nearly an hour, to the point Son came in and said change the subject.
Friday DIL had a “virtual walk through” with a realtor. They’ve put my house up for sale, and unless a “suitable” house is found (it hasn’t so far) i will be put in an old peoples facility. Yes, Son has POA, he can do it.
When they left Fri, they took my youngest cat – i had two – and dumped her on a “cat farm.” Seems they felt i couldn’t afford her.
Then they left. No hugs, no kisses, no i love you, no go to hell, nothing. Monday night it started all over, to the point Son hung up on me. There was much more, but that’s enough. At least i wasn’t hit this time.
And so it goes. Thanks for listening. There is naught to do, naught to say. It just is. Thank you for your kind words and prayers. I thank Our Lord for Imaginary Friends – they are The Best.
On the bright side – at least the pain and falling from this disintegrated knee will be over soon!
And wasn’t tonight’s rally just the Ultraest Greatest?!
