Reading about the Woopie Goldberg suspension in The Flip Side. I had extensive Holocost education over the years, from parents and school to a mandatory college class in 1968, as well as Jewish friends in school and the neighborhood. My first husband was Jewish, and I converted to Judaism in 1971. I also had Czar’s sociology education to bounce off.

The designations used as the basis for most classification by race today came from Blumenbach in the 1700-1800’s. Per Encyclopedia Britannica he “ divided humankind into five “varieties” and noted that clear lines of distinction could not be drawn between them, as they tended to blend “insensibly” into one another. His five categories included American, Malay, Ethiopian, Mongolian, and Caucasian. (He chose the term Caucasian to represent the Europeans because a skull from the Caucasus Mountains of Russia was in his opinion the most beautiful.) These terms were still commonly used by many scientists in the early 20th century, and most continue today as major designations of the world’s peoples.

These classifications not only rendered human groups as part of nature but also gave them concreteness, rigidity, and permanence. Moreover, some descriptions, especially those of Linnaeus, included statements about the temperament and customs of various peoples that had nothing to do with biophysical features but were forms of learned behaviour that are now known as “culture.” That cultural behaviour and physical characteristics were conflated by these 18th-century writers reflects both their ethnocentrism and the limited scientific knowledge of the time.”

There was a lot of opinion mixed in with “science” in his and Linnaeus’ work before him: Australian aboriginals are in the “Caucasian” category. Mixing in culture, religion and customs makes these “racial” designations unclear. Whoopie’s statement was an opinion not divergent from what can be extrapolated from the definitions above and in use today in the Western world. Divisions of “us” and “them”.

Of course, I know the Nazis used the term “Jewish race” with specific delineations to identify their political targets, and the Nazis also softened the lines when they chose (to allow loyal Nazis to adopt blond, blue eyed children of full-blooded Jewish parents, for instance). Hutus and Tutsis found ways to divide themselves; Hindus and Moslems and Buddhists, etc.

My point here is actually that Whoopie’s statement was an opinion, and not an uninformed one. Whoopie is being “cancelled” in the “woke” way now being used for favored people (for two weeks…). It is another part of the evolving society we are in now, which prominently censors those who do not speak or write within the bounds of what is allowed (on any given day, subject to terms and conditions). It was wrong for the network to remove her from the public discourse, just as is is wrong to remove Joe Rogen.

P.S. The View is not on my playlist.

    I invite further discussion…..

Your thoughtful analysis is really appreciated. Whether or not Whoopie spoke from an informed position, I don’t think that her statement was made in an honest way. Rather, she was twisting history to deny that racial designations were used by the Nazis, regardless of what those designations were. I’m not sure why.

There is no question that Hitler hated the Jews and blamed them for the many ills in German society. He said so often both in writing and in speech. here is one quote about it:

“Our racial pride is not aggressive except in so far as the Jewish race is concerned. We use the term Jewish race as a matter of convenience, for in reality and from the genetic point of view there is no such thing as the Jewish race. There does, however, exist a community, to which, in fact, the term can be applied and the existence of which is admitted by the Jews themselves. It is the spiritually homogeneous group, to membership of which all Jews throughout the world deliberately adhere, regardless of their whereabouts and of their country of domicile; and it to this group of human beings to which we give the title Jewish race.”

Looks like the jig is up. Our friends at BLM are getting shut down state-by-state. Starting with some of the bluest of the blue states. Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of grifters, unless it was those people from AR.
