Kind of a scary thought.

Living through an earthquake in those days when buildings couldn’t survive such a jolt must have been heart-stopping, literally, for many folks. That was the earthquake which leveled San Francisco.

I learned the fire dept. blew up some buildings to try to stop the fires from spreading. What a mess!

Removing buildings creates a fire break. With a lack of water (the water lines were broken), it was probably their only option.

Good day to you, WeeWeed! Funny but I was just looking up the map of Iceland and surrounding nations yesterday…
The beer story is really true!
“Thousands of US troops deployed to Iceland for NATO’s large war games reportedly drank all the beer in ReykjavÃk in one weekend. A significant number of bars in downtown ReykjavÃk were forced to make emergency beer runs under the onslaught of thirsty American sailors and Marines. Oct 27, 2018”
When looking this up I also read that beer was banned in Iceland until 1989. Since Iceland doesn’t have a military except for Coast Guard (too small a population), they probably weren’t used to how much armies drink. LOL!

Mornin’ Wee and Lucille, and all. Weather………same. Our little lake is so low I don’t think they will be able to run the water fountain that they use to aerate it. I have never seen it this low at this time of year.
I found a list of items to store for emergencies on the Internet: Canned beans, canned pumpkin, canned tomatoes, canned soups, canned coconut milk (unsweetened), canned tuna, and canned artichoke hearts. I think some things on the list seem a little weird. I keep lot of beans, tuna, and chicken. I don’t think I could eat artichoke hearts even if I were starving. Possibly, Anyway, I am pretty well set for a while with some of that, a preppers can of dried food, and lots and lots of water. Also have to think of Loki, too
Now let’s see if WordPress will accept this.

Mornin’ mom! I checked and your lost comment wasn’t in the trash bin, so I can’t help.
Artichoke hearts are good in other things. I like the marinated artichoke hearts in jars.
Here are some ideas for the canned ones:

Lots of people make artichoke dip.

When I tried to send it, WP said it could not be posted. I tried to go back and copy it, but hit the wrong key……..GONE.
I don’t really like artichokes anyway. Well, potatoes will only work if they are canned or I can keep them in the fridge. They start to grow in days here. I am sure there are a lot of canned things I can store. The preppers food supply I bought was from readyhour.com. I got two weeks worth, but think it would last longer for me. I am thinking in terms of things being really bad for longer than a week or two. And, there are always the hurricanes. 🙄

I was thinking about dried potatoes. The fresh ones don’t keep much better here than where you live! People tell me that canned potatoes are good, but I doubt it. I have a small amount of dried egg, lots of milk powder (full fat, buttermilk and skim), and freeze dried onions, as well as some potato and sweet potato dried casseroles.

Oh, I hadn’t considered them. One thing is, I am thinking we might be without electricity anyway, so anything that has to cook for a long time might be a problem. I actually was considering mostly things I could eat right out of the can. On the other hand, I don’t know how many days I will survive without air conditioning. 🙄

Luckily, my stove is natural gas, so I can use the stove top even when the electric is off. Can’t use the oven though. Outdoor grill is an option.

I will probably get one of those little camp stove thingies to use……………if I don’t already have one.

I have a dehydrator. I wonder if I could dehydrate potato slices?

I would think so. Would they keep?

I think they would, if they are dry enough.

Recipes all look great. I always have some canned end some marinated ones, for salads and for one of my 4 bean salads.

Don’t forget the dried staples: milk, potatoes, beans, rice, pasta etc. Canned clams are a good addition too, and fruit!

Good morning, aus. Maybe management will need to gather a bunch of hoses, use every outdoor faucet and fill the lake up…LOL!

Interesting. I knew about some of these (baking soda in onions for instance; helps them brown faster and to break down in soups or stews), but not all. Baking soda also helps ground beef to brown faster too (Dissolve a pinch of baking soda with a little water, then mix that into your ground beef and let it sit for at least 15 minutes.)

You also have to scald milk before you make yogurt or it wont set up right.

G’day all! I’ve been absent for a while, so figured I’d better check in. All is well here in my little corner of Alaska. I had the cataract surgeries last week and the week before, and all went well. The outcome hasn’t been perfect, but overall as good as the surgeon hoped for. Since I had radial keratatomy 25 years ago, he said, there is a “surprise factor” involved that is difficult to anticipate. I went for correction of distance vision with the expectation of continuing to need readers and that is what I got, though he thinks I will still need mild correction for the distance, possibly only when driving. So far I am only wearing readers and driving just fine with no correction. I follow up with him next month.
On Monday I see a new orthopedist to evaluate my arthritic shoulder. Expecting to need shoulder replacement. After 12 orthopedic surgeries in my life, I don’t fancy another one. But I am really ready to have this thing stop hurting so much. Hoping I can put it off until fall so I don’t have to spend our short and glorious summer with my right arm in a sling going to PT. My dear cousin is coming to spend the month of July with us, and I plan to have fun!
Summer solstice is getting close, and daylight is approaching round-the-clock. The sun is rising at 4:30 am and setting at 11:30 pm. And the hours in between don’t get really dark, more like civil twilight. Another week and we’ll have sunshine at midnight. I love summer!

Best of luck, Tundra. Arthritic shoulders are nothing to laugh at, for sure. And the test to find out what’s wrong with a painful shoulder is horrible. Don’t remember what it’s called but there is one where they shoot your shoulder with some liquid. The pain from this test literally made me scream in pain. Gives me the shivers just thinking about it.
We’re light a long time during the day, too. Not as long as Alaska, of course. This is the first year it’s bothered me. I installed draperies in the master bedroom but my office bedroom doesn’t have them. Our sunrise is around 4:50 and today’s sunset will be at 8:45. The other day I was watching the livefeed from St. Petersburg, Russia and it was fully light at 3:40 AM.
