One of the best things in my life was a week spent in Carson City. We went up to Tahoe numerous times, drove to Death Valley, tried to get to Yosemite but the pass was closed (in late April, it never occurred to us Southern tenderfeet that was a thing), and we explored a lot of California including Napa Valley. Spent a day in Virginia City. I have a tiny little brass and silver highly engraved platter with a little lidded pot and barely above thimble sized cups that I think is for liqueurs or something like that I found there. It survived the moving purge, a treasure I keep for memories of the trip.
I so loved the Sierras and Tahoe. Normally a touristy town is not for me, but I would love a long visit there, winter first, then maybe summer too. We roamed all lover that corner of Nevada and a huge chunk of California too, and I absolutely fell in love with the entire area.
As we crossed the mountain to get to Death Valley we discovered that the highest point in the continental United States and the lowest point are both in the same county.

Beautiful area reminiscent of the ‘old west.’ If you drove through Virginia City down the back side and took the road over Mr. Rose, you would have come out through the Ponderosa (Bonanza) country and down into north Lake Tahoe. Breathtaking!

Good morning everyone. aus, I hope you feel better and are recovering well. Be careful on those dog walks!
Litenmaus, and all of you in the bitter cold, stay warm and safe and I hope the worst is over soon. I have often wondered how Indians and our forefathers survived with only fires to keep them warm. I remember my uncles talking about how my aunt was so lucky, she got the bedroom with the fireplace upstairs in the old farmhouse. And I also remember Sharon’s Mailboxes and Old Barns stories where she mentioned there would be snowflakes on the bed quilts in the mornings.
We have some teens weather headed in next week, maybe a flurry or two. Nothing like what you guys are living with.

Menagerie, I think it is partly what we get used to. I grew up in FL. It was hot and uncomfortable, but manageable. There was no air conditioner in school. We didn’t have air conditioning until I was in my teens in our house, a window air cond. We went to church in girdles (my mother said I jiggled), hose, shoes, gloves and hats. And, we didn’t have air conditioning. Now I can’t be out in the heat very long without feeling faint. I pay $20 a mo. for a carport so my car doesn’t sit in the sun and be overheated when I get in it. What you get used to. Oh, and old age. LOL

I’ve had much the same thought. My grandfather passed away the end of December in Iowa many years ago. The funeral was January 2 and our flight to California was on the 3rd. Our little rental car was fired up with the heat on full for a good 30 minutes before we left. You could still feel the cold oozing into it as we drove to the airport.
I have tremendous respect for the fortitude and determination of those that settled our country.

Yes. Looking at those mountains, I would have settled right where I stood, no chance of me crossing. Then again, I would not have crossed the Mississippi, or left Boston, or sailed from England, or probably not left France. This is all too much adventure….

Mornin’ All. It is 71* and humid here. Sorry I can’t share any of this with you all up north. If we could put this weather together with your ridiculously cold weather and it might be pretty comfortable, uh, except it would probably be so cool, people here would be complaining about the cold.
It is hard to believe this cancel culture is really goings strong. The stories are just unbelievable. How people who go after strangers because they believe they have different ideas about politics amazes me.

Morning all……Temperature remains at the 15 below mark, but this morning NOAA issued a ‘wind chill warning’ and it appears that we may see temperatures reach 55 below at least thru Friday. I may have to curl up in my freezer just to warm up…..:0)

Yeah aus, it’s taking everything in me to not freak out about the extreme cold.
The downside is that the worst is yet to come….when the weather eventually warms up it will cause the frost to be pushed deeper into the ground and that’s when we’ll begin to see water lines freeze and possibly burst.

If it even stays around 32* for a day or so here, the pipes will freeze because they are right at the surface of the ground, I mean here in my apt building. My outside faucet has a pipe that comes from the building and has about an inch of dirt over it. 😯
I can imagine that much cold could do a lot of damage there.

I have two outdoor spigots, and mine don’t have shut-off valves (best protection), so I have foam insulated guards that fit over them.

Wouldn’t do much good in this situation since the pipe from the building is about 4 ft and is practically lying on the ground. LOL

In the winter of 2018 my water lines froze during a short cold snap, so that summer I had the contractors add another four feet of soil over the top of the water lines running across my property.
I’m hoping that those efforts will prove to be beneficial this winter……my fingers are crossed…..

I hope that you do not even have to step outside! We here in the South really don’t speak that language! It is incomprehensible to us. A few times in my life it has gotten to about below overnight, usually only for one night. And I mean that is rare!

I remember in the early 70’s it got -10 here and the water mains to my sister’s trailer park froze. I lived with her and her family at the time. We had to go to my Grandparent’s house in town every day for 10 days for our showers and laundry! Such fun!

The 15 below is cold but as long as I bundle up in my carharts and parka it’s not too big a deal being outside for 5 or 10 minutes. However if the wind starts blowing it’s gonna be painful taking food & water to the ferals and I am not looking forward to the experience.

Do they hunt on their own & get water from snow or can they go without your supply of food & water for a day or 2 if they’re huddling together inside somewhere in the cold? I don’t know anything about feral cats. Can you comment here before and after going out? Let us know how it goes.

The ferals can hunt on their own, but it’s pretty slim pickins’ this time of the year. Also, we have coyotes that are stalking the streets and kitteh-ka-bobs is one of their favored snacks..
So, I’m trying to keep them fed and watered so they stay inside the building, giving them a chance to survive through the spring.
I have an ulterior motive in that on the opposite side of my street stand grain elevators and in the spring & summer the ferals keep the mice infestations to a minimum.

In about 1995, a couple of years after we relocated to west central Minnesota, we were working on building a beautiful deck in the summer. The instructions gave very clear details about how those 4 X 4’s had to be anchored, in concrete and all. They specifically stated that the holes for the 4 X 4s had to extend below the frost line….so my husband, detailed oriented as he was, and determined to “do it right”, dug those holes to five feet, and the corner posts were also standing in a foot or so of concrete.
The ground, in some summers, would not be completely thawed until into summer months. Didn’t quite develop any official tundra, but sometimes we wondered…..

We are expected to get to 19* on Saturday morning. Czar and I prepared in the past by putting Christmas lights all over the pump, tanks and pipes at the well, then covering everything with quilts and other fabric, then the whole thing with sheet plastic. I have to start tomorrow since I have to do it by myself….

Do you at least have someone nearby to call if need be, or to say I’m working outside and I’ll call you in an hour (or however long it takes)? I’m not sure if what you’re doing requires any climbing on anything. Be careful. Comment here maybe before and after???

Jeans, that is the best video ever!
I’ve got a son I try to study when it comes to bargaining. He’s a danged master. When he buys a truck it takes days and I think they might give in to get rid of him. He stays with his jobs and looks to grow, but the last time he changed jobs he was outrageous. Not only In bargaining for money, but benefits, vacation time the day he went to work for them, etc.
I do not have that kind of audacity. He says it isn’t audacity, it is confidence, and that he’s worth every bit of it. He usually gets what he wants, so it’s either true or they buy into his story. Which, I guess, ought to demonstrate his sales skills right off the bat.

Good for you, Menagerie – leaving Amazon is painful but gratifying. In our continuing search for alternatives, we ordered a 16 oz tub of moisturizer from an eBay seller. Received two 8 oz TUBES in a few days PACKAGED IN A WALMART MAILER!! (We’re censuring Walmart too, and have since discovered they’re soliciting eBay sellers to proccess their orders covertly.) BEWARE…snakes!!

I wonder if there is some way of commenting here to be of help for those of us who may be alone and may not have anyone close if they are outside doing things in bad weather. After Aus’s fall, Czarina covering things up, and Litenmaus feeding cats at 55 below, I wonder if our communicating here can be of help.

What I do is text my daughter. If I don’t text when she expects it, she has the numbers of two of my neighbors who can do a wellness check. Or she could call the local police if need be.

Except for my friend, I don’t have anybody to check on me. And, she lives a full 30 min away. I am seriously thinking of getting one of those things that call 911, although I have a Jitterbug and it has a *5 that I think calls 911. I just don’t usually have it on me without my purse. But, I guess I can fix that.

The only thing that we could do is call 911 if we know where to send them. But, probably each of us has somebody that can be notified, which they should do.
