Good morning everyone. Here is Bishop Barron’s gospel reflection today. I like the different thinking he presents.

    THIRD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

    MARK 4:1-20

Friends, in today’s Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the sower.

In this famous story of the sower, we often focus on the different types of soil and apply them symbolically to ourselves. Now, there is nothing wrong with this interpretation as far as it goes, but I think that it misses what was at the heart of the parable for Jesus.

Focus your attention on this absolutely mad sower. Imagine a crowd of farmers listening to this parable: a man goes out to sow and he throws the seed on the path, on rocky soil, on thorny soil, and finally on good soil. The original hearers of this tale would have have exchanged glances and rolled their eyes at the ridiculousness of this farmer.

That was precisely the reaction that Jesus wanted. For God is like this crazy farmer, sowing the seed of his word and his love—not only on receptive soil, not only to those who will respond, but also on the path, on the rocks, and among the thorns, lavishly pouring out his love on those who are least likely to respond. God’s love is irrational, extravagant, embarrassing, unreasonable, completely over the top.

Beautiful, Menagerie! This type of thinking and exposition comes from hours of meditation and pondering on Scripture’s words and meanings, likely in the original languages also.

Jesus said, “…He causes the sun to rise and shine on evil and good alike. He causes the rain to water the fields of the righteous and the fields of the sinner.” (Matthew 5:45b)

Bottom line: God loves everyone whether or not they love Him back.

    • True!
Just a thought: The healthy are the fertile soil, the sick are the rocks, and the healthy surrounded by the sick are the weeds:

      Matthew 9:13
But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
      Mark 2:17
On hearing this, Jesus told them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
      Luke 5:31
Jesus answered, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.

Mornin’ everyone. Grey, overcast and misty here. What you guys up north would call a warm day and we down here would call a cool breezy day. It is actually quite pleasant. I hope you all have a nice day, whatever kind of day it might be. My DIL and I were laughing yesterday. I was all hot and sweaty down here in 80* weather and she is in MA, it is snowing, and the forecast appears to be snow, snow, and more snow and she loves it. LOL. She has two little girls who are really enjoying the snow along with four dogs.

True, but she’s still fairly young –
Ronald Reagan was originally a Democrat,
and is she any worse than righties like Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Mitt Romney, Ben Sasse or Pat Toomey.

The further left the Democrats keep pushing I have to wonder if people like Tulsi might be open to joining a 3rd party.
/ well, second party if you count dems and repubs as a uniparty.

I posted this before, but will repeat. Anybody who puts forth legislation like this is not to be trusted.

On September 19, 2019, Representative Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) introduced H.R. 4401 Restore the Fairness Doctrine Act of 2019 in the House of Representatives, 116th Congress. Rep. Gabbard was the only sponsor. H.R. 4401 was immediately referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on the same day. It was then referred to the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology on September 20, 2019.[50]

H.R. 4401 would mandate equal media discussion of key political and social topics, requiring television and radio broadcasters to give airtime to opposing sides of issues of civic interest.[51][52] The summary reads: “Restore the Fairness Doctrine Act of 2019. This bill requires a broadcast radio or television licensee to provide reasonable opportunity for discussion of conflicting views on matters of public importance.[53] The Restore the Fairness Doctrine Act would once again mandate television and radio broadcasters present both sides when discussing political or social issues, reinstituting the rule in place from 1949 to 1987 […]. Supporters argue that the doctrine allowed for a more robust public debate and affected positive political change as a result, rather than allowing only the loudest voices or deepest pockets to win.”[54]

I don’t mind snow as long as it doesn’t turn to ice, but it’s been over two months since I’ve seen a snowflake and it’s winter, it seems odd without snow. :0)

There are exemptions under FOIA regarding trade secrets and we understand such exemptions and their applicability to certain information. However, the language in this contract focuses on encouraging, in fact, instructing the County that they “shall” take any and all action necessary or appropriate to assert “potentially applicable exemptions from disclosure” and to take all other legally permissible steps to resist disclosure of the information.

Thanks. It did clear it up some. This part seemed the most helpful from that article,

Let’s back up a bit to go over the basics of what is going on here.

GameStop is a video game retailer headquartered in Grapevine, Texas, that operates more than 5,000 stores. Between malls dying out and the pandemic, if you forgot the company existed, that would be fair. But it’s still out there, trucking along. GameStop has become a popular play among short sellers, who are basically investors who think a stock will go down. In Wall Street terminology, these investors are bearish on a stock’s prospects. Again, dying malls plus pandemic. You get the reasoning. (Plus, GameStop has had a rocky history and faces a long-term threat from digital game downloads.)

Though the buying frenzy around GameStop hit this month, this one has been in the making for a while. Brandon Kochkodin at Bloomberg recently laid out how GameStop, which isn’t expected to even turn a profit until 2023, has seen its market skyrocket, and what Reddit has to do with it.

    Update after oncology appointment.

PSA numbers are down 92%, still not at normal levels, but we and the doctor think it’s really good numbers for a month after treatment started and less than two months after being diagnosed.
He has some other issues going on with his kidneys, so now we have to find a kidney doctor, right now we’re trying to control it with diet. He’s not liking that at all, protein, salt, potassium, phosphorus restrictions, which means way less meat and beans, very limited amounts of potatoes, oranges, bananas and tomatoes, all of his favorite foods.
His calcium was really low, so he’s now on Tums.
On top of all that he is going to have to have his gallbladder removed.

He’s done with the urologist though, she doesn’t want to see him for a year. He likes that because he’s not a big fan of hers and we’ll probably find someone different when he needs to see one again.

He feels good he says and is still working, just depressed about his diet.

      • michellc says:

No and that makes it worse because he doesn’t like smaller portions.

When he was in the hospital a kidney doctor came in and said his kidneys were having issues, but he didn’t really elaborate, other than they were a little smaller than normal and had some scarring. He was in the room for maybe 5 minutes. The last day in the hospital his partner came in and said they were improving, to drink at least 72 oz of water a day and eat lettuce. To deal with your cancer and he didn’t need a follow up.
Then his last labs showed his creatinine levels up, something I’m now getting a crash course on after the oncologist appointment. Something I don’t know is a few days earlier a calcium lab test(they’re checking that more often than the complete blood workup, due to some of the medicine he’s on can lower calcium) showed his calcium was real low, but they failed to send it to the oncologist. So he had the complete lab work a few days later, in the meantime us not knowing any better, he was drinking tons of milk and orange juice with added calcium. We never limited his diet, because we were never told to. They wanted him to gain weight so he was eating like a pig, all the meat he wanted, potatoes, tomatoes. Drinking an 8 oz glass of orange juice every morning, eating fruit salad with bananas, oranges and apples at least once a day.
So I’m wondering if all the milk he drank in two days could have played a part in his creatinine levels.
Anyway, the oncologist put him on tums twice a day to increase his calcium, which it is now going back up to almost normal levels and after reading through the paperwork he gave us and reading online I have also learned tums are a phosphorus binder and one of the medicines they usually give someone with kidney problems. By his levels they say he’s stage 3.
Yet outside his numbers, he has none of the symptoms they say he should have, his creatinine levels are just high, and obviously some damage to his kidneys according to the ultrasound. At this point though I don’t know if the doctors he seen in the hospital were worth anything or not, because you’d think if they knew what they were doing they would have at least put him on a special diet or at least said limit protein and potassium. Yet they did nothing but say drink water and eat lettuce and put him on sodium biocarbonate pills.

He has no itching, no loss of appetite, no swelling, no muscle cramps, color is good, his bp was never high in the hospital and we’ve been monitoring it at home due to the different medications he’s on for the cancer, some can cause it get too low and some can cause it to go up. His potassium numbers are normal.
There’s been a few times in the afternoon when it’s a little up, but that’s only been like twice and it was in the low 130’s over low 80’s, usually it’s in mid 120’s over low 80’s. In the morning it’s in the low 120’s over mid to high 70’s and at night it’s under 120 over low 70’s.

He urinates fine now and it’s always a normal color, he still goes to the bathroom quite a bit, but even that is getting better. At first when they just capped the catheter off and for awhile after they removed it he was going every hour on the hour and having to get up 5 or 6 times a night. The urologist’s nurse said that was normal and he’d have to retrain his bladder. He is emptying his bladder because they checked that at his last appointment.
