Thanks Lucille, we’re full of memories this 1st holiday weekend of the New Year! for some reason that kraut, kielbasa, and hot dogs tasted really good warmed up this time! Maybe it’s that “5” (2+0+2+1) year to start!

My Mom crocheted. When she was a teenager, she made a large doily using kite string. In those days, you used what you had. She usually used it like a trivet for hot dishes on the table. I had it around for years but must have given it to one of my nieces because it’s nowhere to be found in my apartment.
One of my aunts knit large throws. I have one she made in the 1950s. My two cats compete as to which gets to sleep on it.

Mornin’ all. Really, really yucky day here . It must have rained a little last night and it is so humid my clothes got damp just walking in it. For some reason my little doggie got me up an hour earlier this morning so we were back from our walk by 7:30. She must be off daylight savings time already. Hope everyone has a great new day in our new year.
I watched an old movie about John Paul Jones last night. What I got from it was there have been a lot of men mistreated by the Elite in whatever government exists at the moment in the U.S. I am going to find a biography to read to see how much of the movie was true.

Morning aus, bright and warm here today. I was up early so I went out to enjoy the last wisps of mist rising from the field and pond, with a touch of fog too. Skies were clearing so we were able to see some stars and the moon. Looks like first class warm sunshiny day here.

Trade you your damp for my slush!
One reason we were happy about moving 100 miles further north was we thought we would be out of the “slush zone” of southeastern MA, but sometimes it just follows us! Heavy, wet snow/slush is the only part of winter I hate. GRRRR! Dry, fluffy snow – that’s the nice stuff. Snowblower works great on it!

Good afternoon, aus! It’s overcast here, 42 degrees, and trying to rain. Hope it pours and gets rid of the snow. Snow is one thing but when it turns to ice, look out. An acquaintance of mine slipped on her driveway which was iced up last week and landed on her backside. She went to Emergency to see if she’d broken anything and they didn’t even x-ray her! Just gave her a pain-reliever prescription.
Was the John Paul Jones movie with Robert Stack? If so, that was a decent film if you like historical dramas. As for a whole lot of accuracy, it’s doubtful. As you know, reality is often boring; so movies have to spice it up a bit.
Stack was quite handsome both on film and in person…
One time I was in the commissary having lunch with a friend and another guy who’d gone to school with him and Stack passed by our table. This would have been during the time he was making THE NAME OF THE GAME television series, maybe 1970. He knew my friend and so sat down to have lunch with us. Very charming and when he spoke to me he had a habit of taping my hand with his fingers.
Unfortunately my friend’s school chum was very unknowledgeable about films and asked Stack what were some of the films and series he’d been in. We were embarrassed, but Stack didn’t seem to be. He just answered truthfully about THE UNTOUCHABLES and some of the feature films. Nice man. That luncheon is one of my fun memories of working at Universal Studios.

How neat. Yes, that is the one. It actually was pretty intresting. I ordered a biography of John Paul Jones for adolescents. I figured when I was finished I can send it to my granddaughters who are being homeschooled. They can add it to their library.

Good idea about the book ordering. I often read Internet reviews or blogs meant for teens. If something is of interest and I want to pursue it in more depth, more scholarly reading is always available. I also subscribe to the Encyclopedia Britannica site.

My granddaughter got lots of cooking stuff for Christmas, which she asked for, including two cook books. She cooked for the family last night, with her mom’s help. Insisted on making ratatouille, which every single one of us, including her, hated.

Could be, I didn’t look at it. Way too much tomato paste in it for one thing. And it was my first time eating eggplant.I’m don’t know if I liked it because it was overwhelmed.

Ratatouille can be mushy. I got best results following this guy’s direction. The recipe link is broken; if you are interested, I printed it out and have it in my recipe box.
No tomato paste; fresh tomatoes only. The eggplant and squash are cooked separately, and they don’t get mushed up that way. You could leave out the eggplant and use zucchini or summer squash only. Eggplant is like a sponge that doesn’t have much of its own flavor, and soaks up what it is cooked with. The mixture is cooked in the oven at low heat, and isn’t completely covered, so a lot of the moisture evaporates and the flavors concentrate.

I lied. It does have tomato paste, but only 2 TB. I think he cooks his tomato paste (which I also do), which changes the flavor.

Ah yes, Lime jello, cottage cheese, mayo & celery…paired with oyster stew on Christmas eve…..some memories are best forgotten…….:0)

My mother was the only one who ate the oyster stew. I am not a picky eater, but I draw the line.

OMGosh! I’m gagging just looking at it!
I OD’d on jello when volunteering with the Starlight Foundation. As well as getting gift donations and setting up decorations in varied hospitals 3-4 times a year, the one thing the hospitals would regularly allow for food to be brought in was jello. It took 2 weeks to set up and go to the 5 or 6 Boston & suburban hospitals. I made multiple boxes of jello for each hospital trip and cut it out to shapes with cookie cutters. The smell made me nauseous, especially the green jello. I’ve never had or made jello since then!
Did anyone actually eat that?

Yes. I love it. It is a favorite in the summer. And, I finally figured out how to make it more creamy. I tried adding mayo, but that made it taste strange. So, I put the cottage cheese in the blender and made it smooth and now it is exactly the way I wanted it. 🙂

I’m trying to think about it here. The mayo was definitely the worst part. I’m thinking the lime jello and smooth cottage cheese made it like a key lime pie but with walnuts???

Not exactly. It has pineapple, walnuts, celery and cottage cheese. Somebody once put a layer of cream cheese on top and I liked that because I am having a problem with anything tart and that helps smooth out the tartness. I did try it with the mayo, and I love mayo on most things, LOL, but that didn’t work for me. And, what I make is much prettier than that picture. Ha, ha.

It it almost sounds like a fruit salad type thing. I never heard of it before. Sounds like it’s a warm weather/summertime dish. Back in the 60’s or 70’s there were lots of jello & fruit salad type dishes I remember seeing that used the cream cheese or cream. We never had them. I’m sure yours are pretty. Many of these were very pretty 😉

I used to make one with lemon jello, shredded carrot and crushed pineapple. It was quite good. I think it was called “Sunshine Salad”.

I’ve been in and out of here randomly during the holidays. Saw czarina post a time or two, and she said czar was better I thought? Has anyone seen him post lately? And how about Col. Ken? Have I missed them?

Czarina did comment on New Year’s Eve, and I believe she did say that czar was better. He hasn’t commented since before Christmas, however. Haven’t heard from Ken since before Thanksgiving.

She’s active on Twitter, so I assume she’s okay. I think she might be miffed at me over a disagreement we had about Robert Barnes and Lin Wood. That was just before Thanksgiving.

Glad to know she’s active somewhere and not debilitated. Was concerned about her. And have also been thinking of Wooly and Colonel Ken plus Czar especially.
I wasn’t aware of anything about Wood or Barnes, though do have to say that Lin Wood is saying some mighty strange things such as Mike Pence being a traitor and deserving to be executed. Apparently he tweeted that out, but I didn’t save the article link to pass along.

Since we’re talking special occasion recipes, I love bacon. I get a local preservative-free bacon about once a month. For new year’s I made lasagna and instead of a meat in the sauce I cooked the bacon separately, drained it, and then added it to the red sauce with about an hour left of simmering. I have not liked the canned tomatoes I have purchased in the past because lately they have been too sweet. I thought they added sugar to them, but it’s actually the type of tomato that is so sweet. I never add sugar to my Italian red sauces or dishes, so I do not care for that flavor, preferring a strong and tart tomato taste. There also have not been any organic tomatoes* in the 3 nearest supermarkets for the past few weeks!** In desperation I took a 32 oz bottle of organic veggie juice with a variety of veggies (mostly tomato I’m guessing) and used that along with a couple of cans of tomato paste as the base of my red sauce to which I added the herbs, onion, garlic, and bacon. It came out really good! I used use full milk real parm & mozzarella, but only milk with thickener “gums” ricotta was available – what’s up with that??? (Now I know to make my own ricotta. It wasn’t horrible, it just disappeared. I’d never use it for a ricotta pie/cake). I can’t keep DH from scarfing the bacon lasagna down. I think it’s his favorite thing I’ve ever made. Give it a try 😉
*(I have to have organic fruits and non-root veggies or have horrible reactions. Probably from arsenic poisoning growing up near pesticide factory. Wish there was a local doctor to continue chelations to get rid of the rest of arsenic and mercury in my body).
** What’s going on with still having particular foods not available for a couple of months at a time??? Is anyone else having this problem?

Overnight it 1st snowed than rained here, so it gives a particular grayish look to the landscape. I was looking for a painting that was bright, but of winter and found this: NIGHT-COLORS by Leonid Afremov oil on canvas, palette knife. Never heard of this artist before, but it’s bright with wet, rained on snow – enjoy!

Depending upon your color scheme and the painting size (hopefully large), Leonid Afremov’s painting would look wonderful on a wall viewed from across the room.

Sorry I missed them at the Treehouse. Have not been there much. They are certainly happy bright colors. It is interesting with a palette knife not making delicate or detailed strokes such as different size and shape brushes, the impression of all the shapes of trees, lights, people etc. can be made.
