Now begins the week of crap. Tropical storm on the way, my new cell won’t be working until Monday at the earliest, the storms will kill our satellite TV so our connection to the world will be one cellphone that will be out internet hotspot – instead of the usual two – and our communications system. We have a landline but during storms the lines can go down and heavy rains tend to play hob with the transfer boxes. One of the problems of living, effectively, off the internet grid.

To some extent. The ham club here fell apart a few years back, younger folks just never got into it in the way previous generations did. I have CB and GMRS and in case of a real emergency they’ll get me some contact. I’ve talked to the county emergency services commo guy and they don’t even have a formal emergency net for civilians.

The 3rd party company that built our lone cell tower gave us basic cell service though, didn’t have that until just over 2 years ago. The tower’s supposed to be hurricane-resistant though and has about a week’s worth of backup power.

We have a wind-up, solar or battery powered radio that is am/fm and has 2 short wave lines on it. It also has a good led light. I’ve already had to use it a few times, and it sure is great!

I’ve been looking at that as a backup. We have a 22KW propane backup generator that, with our tanks, should last us about 2 weeks running 12 hours a day. That should get us to where the propane can deliver – they were on the road within 4 days after Katrina where the roads were cleared.

I’ve got a lot of rechargeable batteries that I’m topping off now, plus charging sites dedicated to our cells and laptops and some solar chargers – though their charging abilities are not tops.

Katrina was a wakeup call. Though I knew the city was, despite its protestations and decades of ‘be prepared’ warnings, was unprepared the breadth and depth of its unpreparedness was surprising. I went from having little trust in the city’s abilities to help its citizens to less than none.

I have a windup radio with backup batteries too, but I don’t think mine is as fancy as yours.

After 3 days of loss one year, I remembered I could get in a vehicle and have cold air, music, news & weather, phone charge with renewed internet access, and bliss for a very short while, but not too often.

FOX News Host Pete Hegseth Describes Violent Scene on the Streets of DC this Week Where He Served as Major in DC Army National Guard (VIDEO)

When Major Hegseth was in Afghanistan, we sent a couple of emails back and forth. Don’t remember at all what started it. At the time, I belonged to a group that sent packages to the troops. So that might have been how we came in contact since the officers often sent either thank-you notes or emails for their men. He was very nice and seemed to enjoy the correspondence. Wish I’d saved the emails. I also supported the Concerned Veterans For America which he headed for a number of years.

Someone next door posted that some of the National Guard have been inducted into temporary U.S. Marshall service. It apparently provides a way for our men and women to guard our precious monuments, our President, and the White House personnel, and go around the Esper interpretation of the Constitution and our laws. The protection of our national capitol is paramount.

Indeed! Perhaps the self-righteous non-violent protesters (I’m assuming without the necessary permits even if Nancy is accompanying them) should give some thought to the fact that they are running interference for the violent left. Accessories are culpable, too.

Black Lives Matter, the riots, and the new faith’s looming failure
    By Andrea Widburg – June 6, 2020

Because leftism is a fundamentally empty religion, leftist thought leaders keep having to create new sectarian movements that in turn fade away because they’re just as lacking as the umbrella faith of leftism.
