Likely we’ll have our first 90 degree day in mid August. I’m not used to them anymore and so stay inside on any day hotter than 85. When I lived in West L.A. and Santa Monica, I went to the beach nearly every Saturday for years.

Well beaches here are closed but the Czarina and I have been in the area for about 40 years and haven’t gone to the Gulfport beaches once. We used to haunt the Florida beaches a lot when we were in hi school but now I’m afraid we’d both be mistaken for those Eastern European tourists you see on the beach.

Anyone who lives in Gulfport or Biloxi knows that the beaches are just for tourists, and especially anyone out in the water. Nasty stuff ’til you get outside the Channel Islands. Locals never swim in it.

Note I never said anything about going into the water. Most of the time we’re sidetracked by the bars and restaurants that overhang the bay.

Lucille, I lived in Santa Monica and Venice from 1974-80 and went to the beach a LOT. Wonder if we passed each other? Small world.

Czar, nice too have good hot weather. The young men who work for me, have started plowing. They asked me about contour plowing, yeah , plow east – west instead of north- south!

Well that contour plowing does help keep the land from flattening out and the low spots from filling in. My trees don’t need no steeenkin’ plowin’ but my slope runs east to west (or west to east if you’re picky) so I use Pensacola Bahia to keep the dirt from moving south to north. Great stuff, roots go down six feet or more and do a great job of holding my clay soil while breaking it up.

Going to let GGS run a few mags thru my Browning Hi-Power, best feeling pistol I’ve ever held.

Better life through chemistry! We have no front porch on our new home, and a small back patio. We haven’t been able to enjoy the outdoors the last few weeks due to a swarm of bugs I found out are called crane flies. I had the exterminator come out and spray the patio and yard yesterday and almost all the bugs are gone. Now we can eat outside and enjoy the fresh air and views again.

I doubt if the bats I’ve been watching swoop through in the very early mornings apppreciate it though.

I had a friend who had a real problem with small frogs on her front porch, and all around the door. I’m talking many hundreds. When we were working in her garden she found a pot that had water in it and was full of tadpoles and little frogs. I told her that was her problem. She had a frog nursery there in the garden near her front door. After she emptied it, the frog problem went away.

When my mum and I house sat for Auntie’s in Conroe Texas (many years ago) there were dozens of small lizards with suction cup toes all over the sliding glass door in my bedroom that led out to the pool. It was extremely disconcerting for this Chicago girl!

      Exactly.
I had an ant problem in my yard and I found that Denial was the best means to get rid of them. I began an aggressive program of spraying and simply Denied them a place to live. The ants were fewer and smaller, it seems they didn’t live long enought to grow up.

Good morning, Menagerie! Hope there’s enough room to put in a house-wide front porch if you want one.

We loved ours when I was a kid. San Bernardino County is HOT HOT in the summer and without air conditioning inside, that porch was a Godsend. Our somewhat feral mother kitty used to push open the house screen door, run to one of the porch posts, claw her way up it and maneuver herself onto the roof. It was always crazy to watch her do that! LOL!

It’s not the right style house for a front porch, but it has a nice little covered patio with a fine view of the pond and mountain and field, and also opens onto a larger patio behind the house with doors from the bedroom, which I love. So, we still have nice outdoor space to enjoy and I am pretty happy about no wood to maintain. I worked a lot at the cabin cleaning and staining porches, handrails, walkways, etc. Enjoying the easy life now!

Found on our county sheriff’s COVID-19 Resources and Information page:

The Sheriff’s Office is actively working to educate and allow for compliance before any sanctions are given. We are not pulling people over and asking about travels. To do such a thing would be unconstitutional and not helpful for a variety of reasons. We ask everyone to familiarize themselves with the order and limit ALL unnecessary travel.

Glad to hear that law enforcement still recognizes the constitution in my county!

For those of you considering a post-COVID gastronome’s tour of exotic Chinese cuisine you might want to write the city of Shenzhen off your list: https://latesttip.com/chinese-city-bans-eating-of-dogs-snakes-frogs-and-cats-in-the-wake-of-coronavirus-pandemic/

Might want to tell Whoopie she can stop shilling for the Chinese, they’re owning the pandemic.

Also ask that profound thinker why she wants to make the US. into China when there’s the real thing she can visit, purchase a condo and remain.

I knew a light-skinned black guy in 1970s Los Angeles whose relatives in New York asked that he not visit them because they were passing for Jewish. The absurdity of such a request still makes me laugh. He said he told them he wasn’t interested in visiting them anyway. LOL!
