Toddler Hugs Pizza Delivery Man Who Just Lost His Daughter

Good morning everyone. I have questions for the gardeners and green thumbs among you. I’ve never, not once, successfully kept a plant alive, but now I have a home with large front windows with a southern exposure.
My husband gave me this very tiny little miniature rose bush in a pot for Valentine’s Day. It’s only about three inches tall. I googled what to do, and I realize plants sold in drug stores probably aren’t meant to live, but I’d sure love to save it.
I’ve repotted it, fed it, keeping it watered just right, resisting the urge to over water since I have no idea what else to do. It gets sun every day for hours in a warm room. Still, it is rapidly dying. Any last minute life support tips?

I wish I did, but as a serial indoor plant killer, I don’t have much to add. 🙄

Haven’t gardened in a long time, but my mother once told me that roses are not house plants (I was given one that did the same thing.) As soon as it gets warm enough, plant it outside. You may need a little chicken wire cage over it to deter the rabbits, but my mom has planted the mini ones outside before and they’re fine. Just get the cage on them so the bunnies don’t eat them.

Thanks Rhea, I’ll get the little guy out if it survives!

They are outside plants and need lots of direct sunlight. When it gets HOT they need lots of water, don’t drown them but don’t let the dryout either so a goodly sized pot with plenty off area for their roots and good drainage and some mulch go a long way. If you’re going to leave it in a pot outside, putting it in a lighter colored pot goes a long way to making sure the roots don’t get overheated as the sun hits the pot.
You can find fertilizer and soil pH info all over the net but if you’re having to frequently water using tap water might pose a problem. If your water’s softened the salts in it can build up over time and cause problems as may the chlorine in it depending on how much your area puts in the water. If your water’s not softened then leaving it out for 24 hours before you put it on your plants helps but good old rainwater is still #1. We put a lot of plants under the roof’s drip line to catch the morning condensation runoff as an adjunct.

Thanks, I’ll get it outside ASAP, and I never thought about the water. I should have, I know not to use city water for all my ferments, like the kombucha, just brain dead on the plants I guess.
Do you think it would be warm enough to put the pot outside when it is in the fifties out? Maybe I can at least set it out during the day.

We have ones in the ground and one we’ve been nursing in a pot – they all live outside. Ours stay outside, especially the ones in the ground, 365. Some may not bloom if they don’t have enough winter chill. If you’re getting below 28 and you feel nervous then bring it in for the night but they can be grown all the way into zone 3 and if the bush ever does encounter cold that’s hard enough to freeze the top it will generally regenerate from the roots if it’s well mulched.

Roses grow in the ground here, and it gets plenty cold.

Sometimes it’s not as cold down here in Indiana, but the minis stay out with the big roses in the garden year round down here too. Full sun exposure, largely left to their own devices except for getting mulched.

And you’re a solid UDSA zone 6. When they die it’s frequently ownercide.

I was seeing Detroit as 6a but you, as we are, are probably in a transition zone. We were an 8b but they’re thinking of moving us to a 9a.

I double checked the charts. I am on the edge of 6a.
ADD: But not far from zone 5. Very swiss cheese in this area. Part of it has to do with lakes, and part with elevation.

Watch the chart, you may jump up in a few years. We’re not getting enough chill hours for a lot of fruits now so I’ve swapped to hybrids designed for our low-chill area.

When Yang bowed out I posted support for the YangGang, told them #StillVotingYang was honorable (and I do believe that this is true). Anyhow I got a bunch of likes and retweets and some YangGang followers. One of my new followers tweeted that her family needed Yang, (Think $1000.00 month so one can pursue their art “career”) .
Anyhow just recently she posted a list of needs with a thank you note in particular for those who sent cat food, then she listed all of her cats must have been at least 10 kitty names.

Yeah, I love his voice. I read that when he went into acting, a friend told him not to go to acting school because they would change his voice and make him speak different. So, he didn’t. Smart choice. He has some mannerisms that I think are really cute. One is, when he says goodbye, he kinda flings his hand in a wave. He doesn’t actually do a wave.

Didn’t know there was more than one photo with him and her. Can you post the other one? LOL! You can never get too many photos of attractive men…and the great thing about that is a man doesn’t have to be “handsome” to be attractive. The most attractive man I’ve ever known isn’t handsome in the least but there’s an aliveness in his eyes and both a funny and sweet aspect to his personality.

Congratulations on your smoking cessation! I was a heavy smoker, beginning at age 16 and stopping at age 41, 3 days after my older sister died of emphysema (she was just 60). I have been smoke free for 30 years now, and it was the best and most difficult thing I ever did.
It is good to have you here, Gary. We are a small but congenial group, and always glad to welcome new members.
You are right about education, and I try to do that here and everywhere I can on the internet. Sometimes it just becomes overwhelming, though.
I’m about to start making chicken fajitas, which sounds like a great dinner. I have a very ripe avocado that will be part of my dinner tonight too. Cooking should calm me down some.

The vegetables are marinating, and I’m going to use chunks of rotisserie chicken (never did that before) that I will add at the very end. I’ve always used raw chicken strips in the past (or steak, which is wonderful). I use a wet marinade that I make instead of the dry marinades. Mine is like the ones that I see used in the Mexican stores in Chicago. Mostly worcestershire and soy sauce with lots of black pepper, citrus juice, cumin, garlic, oregano and a bit of vinegar.
You can buy the marinated steak, onion and peppers by the pound at the Mexican store within walking distance of my daughter’s house. It’s on Roosevelt Rd. in Berwyn, IL. Fresh corn tortillas still warm from the factory can be purchased for pennies as well.
You can also buy a similar marinade from Jardine Foods, which is located in Buda, TX, if you are interested.
