Canadian government scientist under investigation trained staff at Level 4 lab in China

Well this interesting. I wonder if this has anything to do with the corona virus outbreak? The article is from last October.

A Canadian government scientist at the National Microbiology Lab in Winnipeg made at least five trips to China in 2017-18, including one to train scientists and technicians at China’s newly certified Level 4 lab, which does research with the most deadly pathogens, according to travel documents obtained by CBC News.

Xiangguo Qiu — who was escorted out of the Winnipeg lab in July amid an RCMP investigation into what’s being described by Public Health Agency of Canada as a possible “policy breach” — was invited to go to the Wuhan National Biosafety Laboratory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences twice a year for two years, for up to two weeks each time.

“This will be third-party funded, and therefore no cost to [the Public Health Agency of Canada],” say the documents, obtained through access to information requests. The identity of the third-party was redacted.

During a Sept. 19-30, 2017, trip, she also met with collaborators in Beijing, the documents say, but their names have also been blacked out.

Qiu, her husband Keding Cheng and her students from China were removed on July 5 from Canada’s only Level 4 lab — one equipped to work with the most serious and deadly human and animal diseases, such as Ebola. Security access for the couple and the Chinese students was revoked, sources who work at the lab previously told CBC News.

People working inside the lab told CBC News this week they have heard the couple may return to work soon.

Several of them, who asked not to be identified for fears of retribution, say there have always been questions about Qiu’s trips to China — and what information and technology she was sharing with researchers there.

“It’s not right that she’s a Canadian government employee providing details of top-secret work and know-how to set up a high-containment lab for a foreign nation,” one employee said.

The staff member claims RCMP officers have not yet interviewed key people at the lab, because senior management has not made them accessible to police or allowed staff to contact them with relevant information.

Meanwhile, there has been no change in Qiu and Cheng’s status at the University of Manitoba, which had severed ties with both of them and reassigned her students in July.

There’s a number of substances a military NBC unit could spray. Too long ago for me so I can’t say what the Chinese are using but I’d lean towards supertropical bleach, an old standard that still is in use or a close chlorine-based cousin. It works well and is less of a problem to use in a civilian environment. If they’ve brought a military unit in it could just mean that in their desperation to contain this as quickly as possible they need someone capable of washing down large areas as quickly and efficiently as possible and that would be a military NBC unit.

During the Cold War the official blurb was that the US and Russia held about a gallon each of the smallpox virus just in case of an outbreak, they’d have the stock to manufacture vaccine.

Truth was that Russia had brewed thousands of gallons of smallpox virus and was actively working on a bioengineered version that was much more virulent. Samples of the smallpox culture were found lying about in Russian labs well into the early 2000s when Western inspectors and visitors were banned from most Russian labs.

There’s what was Vozrozhdeniya island in the now mostly gone Aral Sea that for decades had been a Russian bioweapon test site. Then it was an island well offshore from the mainland but now is completely high and dry, the Aral Sea having been mostly destroyed due to Soviet meddling. Not only were there decades worth of bioweapons residue there but at the end of the USSR thousands of gallons of anthrax and smallpox cultures were taken there to be disposed of by burying them in large pits. The Soviets said they’d included enough chlorine bleach in the burial to kill the bioagents but when the US found out they sent teams funded by millions of your tax dollar$ to reexpose the trenches and put a few more tons of chlorine bleach in.

Problem is that we can’t be sure we got all of the disposal sites a records are a problem. There are also incomplete records of what was tested, stored and disposed of there and where. To this day people and livestock who’ve strayed into in the area still drop dead. Our biggest concern is that one or more of the jihadist groups would fund a group to go to the island and try to retrieve viable biowar goo, bring it back to their labs and cook up a witches brew…something not to hard to do as the island’s quite close to the Uzbek and Kazak borders.

China is one of those countries that puts a lot of funds and supplies into the UN and the UN also sees China not only displacing the US as the world’s most powerful (militarily and economically) nation in the world but not being as bend-over-backwards-to-please nations. The handwriting is on the Great Wall and they aren’t going to piss China off.

One out of every 5 people in the world is Chinese. There are some 1,4 billion people in China and over 90% live in the eastern 40% of the country. Cities like Shanghai have a population density of almost 10,000 people per square mile, Hong Kong over 68,000 people per square mile and Beijing over 14,000 per square mile. That’s going to make any outbreak of disease spread fast and difficult to control.

A little late but thought I’d put it here anyway – the Chinese have had their people coming here for decades, as far back (if not farther) as the 60s, working for US civilian and government concerns and stealing our technology wholesale. Their students turned grad students and professors learned, stole and returned to China. The Chinese call them Sea Turtles.

We open our arms to Chinese students and professionals hoping they find a new and acceptable life here with freedom and the ability to carve out their own futures and they stay here for sometimes decades only to one day up and go back to Mother China with everything they can steal. Are we a great nation or what?
