      Thanks lucille. We once were in Charleston for their Christmas parade. It was such fun. There was an actual shrim post with Popey and Olive Oyl and Brutus manning it, among other wonderful things.

      At the time we had only been in the cabin in our little Georgia town a few years and we loved our very hokey little parade. When the fire truck, sports cars, and floats would pass by us my husband would say “We have that in our parade.” When the shrimp boat came along he said “We don’t have that!”

        The Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC does a hum-dinger of a Christmas every years! I’ve been just to see the decorations. I’ve always wanted to stay there. Maybe someday.

        I can’t even remember the last parade I was at. I do remember the first time attending the Pasadena Rose Parade on New Year’s Day, though. It was in 1961 and a dear guy named Patrick talked his folks into letting him use the family car to drive from Pomona out to San Bernardino County where I lived and then to a party on New Year’s Eve. Having stayed up all night, I was so sleepy sitting on the curb I kept falling asleep against his shoulder as the floats passed by. LOL!

      New Orleans Krewe of Jingle had its Christmas Parade this week. An old friend who does Santa opened the Canal Street shopping month, and the hotels are decorated

          She posted this because the Santa is a friend of ours. He and his wife live in one of the old mansions just off of Napoleon Ave and have a farm out here in the sticks. Yes, that’s his real beard.

        A stroll thru last year’s lobby but this years looks the same.

        Sigh…they used to have a Sunday brunch in the Blue Room – it was truly to die for. One of the chefs was a friend of mine and we got special treatment but that was just putting sprinkles on top of the whipped cream on top of the ice cream on top of the chocolate cake.

        The food serving area was huge, two sets of serving tables joined together end-to-end down the length of the loooooong dining room. There was every imaginable meat on one side, huge roasts, turkeys, hams, prime ribs, rib eyes…each attended to by a server who cuts the meat to your specs. The other side was largely chefs who freshly prepared your waffles, pancakes, lost bread (French toast), your eggs or the various other breads on display for your gourmand pleasure.

        The back wall was seafood – boiled shrimp, oysters, various Cajun/Creole-prepared local fish, crabs…it was all there.

        Finally there was the groaning board of desserts prepared by a classically-trained patissiers. The quantity and variety of desserts from torts to cakes was blinding, you could fill up on the desserts alone and never have everything on the table. It brought tears to the eyes of professional eaters who knew they’d been bested.

        There was a smaller table with teas and coffee, more coffees as that’s the area’s forte. Regular coffee, freshly roasted and ground at a plant on the river that receives beans from Latin America. There was also chicory coffee for the locals and enough teas to keep Mary happy. There were urns of fresh, hot whole milk for the cafe au lait crowd, cream, skim milk for those who’d just eaten more food in one sitting than an Asian village might in a day and who didn’t want to seem piggish. There was also a huge assortment of boozes (a wee bit extra) you could add…or drink straight.

        If I remember correctly the price was $30 a person but all considered (including the fact you were too stuffed to eat anything more until the next day) it was a bargain. Alas, the hotel changed hands and the classy pig-out ended, like other things it ain’t dere no more, it’s just tasty history.

          So beautiful – the floors fascinated me. Do they have the Huey lock box and the old phone screwed down so the riff-raff can’t abscond with same??

            Oh, you mean the ‘de-duct’ box. The hotel has really good security people and local police on detail – city doesn’t want the hi-rollers getting mugged in the expensive places.

    While I was traveling, I read two good books. One was Inside Trump’s White House by . I knew much of what he wrote, but there were enough details that I didn’t know to make it worthwhile. Actually, I had trouble putting the book down. His book was written with the blessing of the White House.

    The other book is Nerves of Steel, by Captain Tammy Jo Schultz. I had seen her on the Huckabee’ show. She is a small, soft spoken woman and she was the pilot on the flight that lost one of its engines which cut a lot of things like wiring and tubes and broke a window in the passenger cabin and pulled a woman almost out of the plane. This is her story of growing up very poor and wanting to fly against all the opposition she encountered. If you decide to read it, don’t be put off by all the stories about how many times men were in a position to stop her or make her life harder. It really isn’t a feminist view, it is just her experiences and how they came together to hone her into the kind of pilot who could land this damaged airp[lane. I loved it. Especially the chapter where she tells what happened that day on the crippled airplane.

        Both grandsons (and my daughter) helped with Thanksgiving dinner. The younger one took a culinary arts class last year, and is applying to work in a bakery.

          If GS has a culinary bent the New Orleans Delgado Junior College has a culinary program set up some 30+ years ago by Lee Barnes that has slots with some of the big local restaurants.

            Well, they are in the Chicago area, and he’s only 16. Actually, my daughter is hoping that he won’t choose food as his career path. She thinks that the atmosphere in restaurants and bars isn’t healthy.

              I’ve found the unhealthy atmosphere is the waitstaff mostly. I used to do details at some restaurants that went to closing and found a lot of college students were waitstaff to make ends meet but fell prey to the ‘after closing’ party ethic.

              Thing i like about the Delgado program is the access to restaurants like Commander’s, Paul Prudhomme’s, Susan Spicer’s, Emeril Legasse and the host of other chefs in town. I don’t think any other city has the collection, diversity and chef-food-culture that NOLA does.

                I’d shoot any son who let a grandkid go to NOLA for any reason, especially an extended stay for college. I’d feel about as good about the safety of that idea as I do about an idgit son going to Mexico next year. Oh, but he’s going to one of the “safe” states and I am an uninformed alarmist.

                You and czarina know where to go, what to look for, and if anyone could be safe, it’s y’all. I’d not see the value over the risk for us outsiders.

              From watching various cooking shows on tv it appears that many high schools nationwide are offering these classes and I think it’s brilliant. The noobs must be able to feed themselves – which begs the question why’d they get rid of home Ec. and Shop to begin with? Not to even go into Civics or how to balance yer dambankaccount……

                Mrs. T and I are still trying to pass on her culinary skills to the next generation with little success so far. She’s workin’ on the grandkids now. My concern is that I saw my bride making cinnamon candies last weekend and she rubbed her eyes, spit, sputtered, spun around several times, and I thought she was gonna go blind for a few minutes. Thank goodness that biscuits and gravy don’t need pepper until the end. 😉

    I just watched a Christmas movie, Noelle (used to be Mrs. Worthington’s Party). It was so touching about two priests, one in a small town, and another one who was sent to close the parish down. I thought it was so touching. And, it didn’t hurt that the lead was played by a man who looks like a young Robert Redford. I don’t know if Catholics will find it offensive but someone reviewed it and said he played the part of a priest as a real human being.

    Constitutionally backward is how we would describe the assertion by the Democrats that President Trump is being contemptuous of Congress by failing to mount in the House a defense against impeachment. The Times, in an editorial this afternoon, says that by signaling that he won’t “mount any defense,” the president is suggesting that “it is somehow beneath him to participate in a constitutional process.”
