      LOL We put our chairs like that when not in immediate use as it helps keep the seats free of debris and the water drains off better. Then a small towel to dry completely just before sitting.

          When hand fourteen acres carpeted in that come fall. Trouble was, you HAD to blow those leaves off the driveway or it got slick and you couldn’t see the ditches. Also, the leaves killed most plants if you didn’t get them off.

          Worth every bit of it for a long time. I used to sit on the porch for hours. We still have an excellent view of a mountain of hardwoods here, and a slight ridge just across the road, but without all the work from the cabin.

      This is under five minutes from my house. I’m looking at Raccoon Mountain from my windows and patio. We drove up at sunset a few nights ago and were wowed at the view not only of the lake and the mountain, but in several spots the view of the Tennessee River canyon opens up. Still lots of late color to be seen.

      I wonder if they let people up there when they drain the lake and pump it back up. They used to let you tour the facility when it first came online and I am now quite sorry we didn’t go.

      Anyhow, I’ll be getting familiar with those walking trails, probably more so in the spring. Practically my own backyard. My only concern is the isolation and no carry rule.

        Oh yeah, close to where we were looking at retiring at Mentone. I love DeSoto Falls and the Manitou Cave – my good friend lived in Mentone and later lived down by the cave. Not the only cave in the area but a great one to visit.

        Fall was great up there, those hardwoods on Sand Mountain would change and the place would light up…what a place year-round. Y’all lucked out living upthere.

        The ‘no carry’ would bother me too, not only potential 2-footed problems but feral hogs. They’ll be out foraging for nuts and as the winter picks up they’ll be hungrier and meaner. Alabama was feeding the raccoons from the air with a bait that had rabies vaccine in it, trying to wipe the disease out in the state, but the hogs got smart in some areas and ate the bait. If one them big boys bites ya at least ya won’t get the rabies.

    Came across this today from the magnificent mind of St. Augustine, written in his book CITY OF GOD….

    “It is this Good which we are commanded to love with our whole heart, with our whole mind, and with all our strength. It is toward this Good that we should be led by those who love us, and toward this Good we should lead those whom we love.

    In this way, we fulfill the commandments on which depend the whole Law and the Prophets: ‘Thou shalt love the Lord Thy God with thy whole heart, and thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind’; and ‘Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.’

    For, in order that a man might learn how to love himself, a standard was set to regulate all his actions on which his happiness depends. For, to love one’s own self is nothing but to wish to be happy, and the standard is union with God.

    When, therefore, a person who knows how to love himself is bidden to love his neighbor as himself, is he not, in effect, commanded to persuade others, as far as he can, to love God?”

    A while back a man who put a certain amount of pressure on himself to live up to his ideals said that he seldom spoke of God to others but preferred to show what he believed by his actions. I cared a great deal for him and a long time afterwards thought his decision was really profound and admired him greatly for it. More recently, however, the thought came to me that this stand he took put undue pressure on him to always be an example because you never know when someone will be watching. No one can measure up to that. Give yourself a break!

    So perhaps it’s best to occasionally speak of God, as Augustine discovered, to persuade others AS FAR AS YOU CAN to love God. It doesn’t have to be big or drumrolling, maybe something as short as “May God bless you today” or giving a quote from Scripture to a friend who is having a hard time…and combine speech with showing others, occasionally, that you are doing AS WELL AS YOU CAN AS OFTEN AS YOU CAN to model love, compassion, friendliness, happiness and being charitable. But take the pressure off yourself to be a perfect example 24/7, for surely that is impossible.

      When the great St. Augustine, truly one of the finest thinkers of the world and not just Christianity, is mentioned I always think of his mother, St. Monica. We would not have had his contributions without her. She never gave up on her son and her pagan husband, suffered much, prayed for St. Augustine and her family for over ten years, if I remember correctly. She even followed him in his travels.

      St. Monica has long been the best example and patron saint for us mothers who pray for our grown children.

    3) Now that my little dog is an only I leave her food out so that she can graze all day. She has a dry food mix with different morsels in it. She has decided that she doesn’t like one particular morsel.

    So.

    She takes the pieces that don’t meet her standard of taste, puts a piece in her mouth and then flings it across the room.

    Yesterday when I came hoe there were about 25 morsels all over the floor.

      Thank you and good morning lovely. As a young girl I fell in love with Van Gogh’s masterful and wild use of color and the passionate love has never left me. Lately I have come to understand that I spent most of my life trying to tamp down that weird, wild, colorful side of myself, even in my own minimal artistic talents. Should have let ‘er rip, I’d have been the better for it.

      You’ve given me a reason to enjoy my all time favorite YouTube clip again. I must have watched this 25 times or so. The actors are everyone perfect in every scene.

        Time to bring out your colorful side! I like white walls, but just for myself, I like color in other people’s houses.

        I do have for the first time an Art Wall I’ll take a picture and post it one of these days.

        I love the Van Gogh clip always makes me weepy.

      Love your little dog story! Terrific group of Smiles, lovely! Be aware of evil and work toward its eradication as well as you can, but at the same time concentrate/dwell on the good because that’s how you gain the strength to go after the bad. Keep smiling!

    We have to have some of the mostest squirreliest animals around.

    I came home a few minutes ago, push the garage door remote and as it opened saw the garage cat walking out with a fat mouse in his mouth. He wasn’t holding it as prey, he was carrying it as a cat would a kitten. He trotted over to the lawn, put it down and watched it while it caught its breath. Soon the caty and the mouse were playing tag…mouse would run out a few feet, cat would wait then pounce and not put claw or tooth into cat but playing. At times the mouse would stop, sit up and stare at the cat. Other times the mouse would run at/under the cat who’d jump up as if in surprise but not come down on the mouse, just pat at it or run around. The two inside/outside cats were right there, grey cat just sitting and watching while B&W cat just yawned and went to the food bowl.

    I took the groceries inside, put the frozen food in the freezer and went back to get more groceries, but this time Chez the 40 pound chihuahua came with. I saw orange cat walking back into the garage and as I scanned the yard there was the mouse, about 100 feet away, bouncing thru the grass and heading for the weeds. If the mouse thought it had it made it was badly mistaken as Chez, who’s part terrior, saw it and shot over to it. She was bouncing up and down on and around it, making snapping feints but not hurting it. She finally picked it up and brought it over to me as if to share her toy.

    I had groceries, no interest in the mouse and just called her, telling her ‘lmside’. She dropped the mouse and hopped inside…last I saw of the cat and dog spit sotted mouse it was hopping off towards the weeds, most likely looking for a shower.
