      The same as in Vietnam, sheer waste. We had a whole hospital made from mobile home trailer units, capable of supporting the whole base, delivered. Due to some bureaucratic screwup it wasn’t assembled and the personnel never arrived. The whole thing was picked up and dumped into the sea, bureaucratic/political stuff prevented it from being given to the Vietnamese where it could have brought much needed care.

      We had a Conex box incorrectly delivered, it was meant for the Coasties a few hundred miles south and no one wanted to transport it and the Coasties couldn’t come for it. The box contained a complete machine shop for small marine engines and wasn’t cheap, even then. It was looted, the remains dumped and the Conex box repurposed, the Coasties just ordered another one.

      We dumped tons of stuff into the ocean, it was just too much trouble to sort out and reissue and it was a bucks-down war with new stuff in the pipeline acomin’ your way whether ya needed it or not. It’s how bureaucrats spend our $$$$$.

        After Pearl Harbor, one of my uncles joined the USN and was first stationed on a yacht which had been donated to the Navy by a Hollywood mogul when war broke out. He’d left everything onboard.

        I remember my uncle telling me that many thousands of dollars worth of items…uber expensive sterling silverware, pots, pans, cookware, monogramed china, glassware of all types, binoculars, deck chairs, various brass items, storage containers of linens/towels/blankets, and anything not deemed useful to the navy was dumped at sea.

        Everything could easily have been donated to a charity to benefit sailors. But that was too much trouble. Of course they wouldn’t let any of the sailors onboard keep a thing. Thinking outside the box is just not in the regulations.

          You don’t have to be smart to be an officer and they make these decisions. That’s why one of the main functions of senior NCOs, aside from protecting their soldiers from stupid officer mistakes, is keeping junior to mid-level officers from killing themselves…at least not the ones who show promise.

      Menagerie, that was most informative. IMO, Justice Scalia had the right take. If it is allowed by the Constitution, then the Constitution takes precedence over personal faith beliefs. And I agree with Scalia’s and Thomas’ view that abortion is not covered under the Constitution.

      If a potential nominee cannot abide by the Constitution, then he should not take the position of Justice or be offered it. He can do a better job of bringing others to a faith position outside the confines of the judiciary where he can speak freely. But why put someone on the Court who has a list of subjects on which they would recuse themselves…and that list would change at the whim of a church leader whose philosophies are already anti-American. That is not serving America well.

        The Real ID Act of 2005, Pub.L. 109–13, 119 Stat. 302, enacted May 11, 2005, is an Act of Congress that modifies U.S. federal law pertaining to security, authentication, and issuance procedure standards for driver’s licenses and identity documents, as well as various immigration issues pertaining to terrorism. (Wikipedia)

        The Feds have demanded that all state’s DLs/IDs meet FZd criteria. If you don’t have one of these standard IDs (or a passport) you will not be allowed to pass any TSA stations to board transportation, inter or intrastate or enter any Federal facility that requires an ID to do so. Period.

        Right now it applies to plane/train/bus but it becomes a defacto standard Federal ID and the Feds will have access to all of the states’ databases. In theory you need to provide a bucket of ID to get it but I didn’t know I got mine until just a few days ago, apparently I got mine when I went in for a normal renewal just before my DL expired. They gave me that DL about 12 years ago when I turned in my Louisiana DL for a Mississippi one.

        The Soviets had an internal passport/ID, every citizen of the state had one. You needed it as a form of national ID and you couldn’t travel or conduct business without it. In many cases you needed it and permission to travel inside of Russia, get caught without it and you were in deep trouble. There were more than a few in the US Federal bureaucracy who wanted a standardized national ID for everyone in the US and for the longest time the idea was fought. Come 2001 and the groundwork for the destruction of privacy and state citizenship was laid.

        At some point I’m sure we’ll see the “Zhow me your paperz pleaze” where you can be randomly stopped on the streets and forced to show ID, maybe explain why you’re there, where you came from and where you’re going. Actually you can be today, it’s called a ‘Terry Stop’ but has some minimal requirements prior to a stop. You also have a police field interview as when you’re stopped for a ‘broken tail light’ or ‘broken licence plate light’. The clumsy cocktail party discussion about ‘where are you headed’, ‘where did you come from’, all of that chatter is about seeing if the officer can develop something out of the encounter while he’s got you stopped. Right now you are not required to answer and if you do and get jacked up into something you can’t claim Miranda.

        There’s a lot of people who want to mandate the answering of any and all questions by any LEA and the requirement to produce personal ID on demand…a practice now used on many highways by ICE/DHS/BP. That smell is the frog soup on the back boiler.

            That slight tickling you feel is the Feds blowing smoke…

            They have this BS about all of the ‘security’ built in, trying to make it seem as if illegals can’t get one but it’s up to the states to manage issuance and those illegals who already have a DL under existing laws I’ll bet are going to get one of these new whiz-bang ones.

            Czarina is dfue to get hers replaced so we’ll see if time has caused the procedures to change.
