Hydrangeas ❤️❤️❤️

I love hydrangeas but I have never had much luck with them. I had a plant I have nursed for a few years. It couldn’t stand the sun. I finally got some bushes grown up enough to shade it and it did a lot better, but last summer’s heat finally killed it. It is hard to watch a plant get smaller and smaller instead of bigger and bigger.

My neighbor has a huge hydrangea just like that white one in the picture. So beautiful, and I have a good view of it from my front porch. He’s an excellent gardener.

Being from the South, my paternal grandparents always had hydrangeas in their garden and were avid gardeners in both the front and back yards. Whenever I see a hydrangea I think of those dear people. Grandma put rusted iron nails in the soil which turned the blooms blue.

You probably can’t do CCW there so I suggest you carry a cheap laptop with a Google OS. When attacked throw it at your assailants and they’ll be confused and frustrated trying to get the $%#@& thing to work giving you time enough to escape…even using Amtrak. I’d suggest a speedier form of escape though as, as soon as their frustration at getting it to work reliably reaches the point that it boils over, they’re going to be REALLY pissed.

Au contraire about CCW. Michigan has reasonable gun laws for a supposedly liberal state. Lots of gun owners here and lots of hunters. By the way, it is a common misconception that Detroit has strict gun laws. They are the same as in the rest of the state; that’s the law here.

I was thinking in terms of reciprocity and local preemptions. There’s also now the increasing hurdles to jump in transporting a gun when you fly and, due to a current case and changing opinions, the pending ban by rental companies of carrying/transporting a firearm in their vehicles.
LikeLiked by 3 people
Michigan honors all other states Resident Permits/Licenses to carry concealed firearms. Gun laws are set by the state and cannot be preempted by local jurisdictions. Of course there is still the problem of flying with a firearm, and carrying one in a rental car. Most rental car companies won’t even let you take your pets in their vehicles.

I’m seeing Michigan as recognizing the CCW permits of 39 states. Those states that do not honor Michigan’s CCW or have CCW permits of their own are not honored in Michigan.
States like California and New York are really touchy with New York not recognizing any other stare’s CCW. NYC will even bust outside LEA and confiscate the weapons of off duty, never mind retired, LEA from other areas carrying in NYC under Federal law.

According to what I am reading (several sources) Michigan recognizes CCW permits from ALL states, Puerto Rico and DC.

It’s surprising as y’all recognize states like Alabama and Mississippi who don’t require any formal; training for a CCW. Though there are a few states who don’t recognize others, or any, outside CCWs most have agreements only with states who recognize theirs. I’m wondering if Michigan’s made a recent change as the CCW sites I usually use showed states you didn’t accept.

To top yesterday off, Walmart got me again.
My relationship with Walmart is akin to their being run by Hatfields and my being a descendant of the McCoys, there seems to be an almost genetic dislike of each other.
I’d decided I was going to make crab cakes and a whitefish poached in a cream-crab sauce. Discovering that I didn’t have any Old Bay seasoning was bad enough, I had to dig through the spice rack to find the constituent spices ti gin it up, but the storebrand half-and-half I’d bought at Walmart a couple of days before had turned solid. I usually check the drop-dead dates on the carton as stockers tend to rotate the older product to the front but as the store was looking rather picked-over with large voids on some shelves I assumed product was moving and things would be fresh. I don’t know how many times I used the ‘assumed’ idiom with my troops but…sound of steel trap snapping shut.
I managed to salvage the menu but the trick Walmart pulled still…irritated…me. The drop-dead date on the carton was August 6th, somehow it had mysteriously moved to the front of a sparsely populated row two weeks after it was supposed to have gone on Medicare. I would have taken it back but a 14+ mile trip for one carton sort of doesn’t seem productive and there’s always the possibility they’d have charged me the difference between 1/2&1/2 I’d bought and cream cheese I’d carried out. Will stick to my local Dollar General for fresh dairy, it’s only 7 miles away.

My son was in line to return something to Walmart. There was a woman who was returning an almost completely eaten birthday cake. Wasn’t good, she said. Son said there could not have been more than a couple of pieces left.
I hate thieves, and I hate that companies cater to them, even blatant ones. Having worked retail, I can tell you, the thieves who slink in and shoplift are the “honest thieves” in my mind. There are an unbelievable number of little old church going ladies who don’t see a thing wrong with using something and returning it while their husbands are stealing screws or parts out of boxes in hardware. I used to hate the end of summer. Droves of people tried to return lawnmowers, weedeaters, etc, used all summer. People should by paint sprayers and return them clogged up after they used them. You name it, they also return grills after using them all summer.
I could go one, but no need. Bottom line is there are people out there, and lots of them who think of themselves as good people but they aren’t. And I bet they have a real judgemental eye looking at other people too.

I gave up with returns, except for a few large items, long ago. I just am very careful about what I buy, it takes longer but I dig thru the produce, check efey can or box for its drop-dead date, and have alternate plans in pl;ace for quickly ‘maturing’ things like breads.
I don’t buy meat/fish from WM unless it’s the big bags of frozen, not from China, for things like stews or bakes. I can get a far superior grade of meat, cut to my specs, for a bit more at my local; butcher shop. Same with fish, we’re the catfish capital of the US so why should I buy Chinese or Vietnamese from polluted waters when I can get fresh pond-raised for a few $ more?
LikeLiked by 2 people
I won’t buy “fresh” fish from the local store where I do most of my shopping. I do buy frozen occasionally. Their “fresh” stuff is awful. On the other hand, their produce, poultry and meat is pretty good.

I worked at WM for a while. Once when I was in customer service, somebody brought in a shower curtain rod to return and expected the full amount of money. The dang thing didn’t even come from WM! I suspect it came from K-Mart, but the boss said “Just give her the money”. She had no receipt, and I had to just give her what she asked for. Jeesh!
I didn’t work there for very long.

Until the rise of Al Gore rescinding his concession to George W., I’d never given much thought to the duplicitous nature of print or electronic media.
Due to a senior moment, I can’t remember the chain store, but I read an article about their policy of accepting unused returns bought elsewhere if the product was one they carried. So rather than going to the far away store where I originally purchased a costume jewelry item, I took it to the nearby store I read about.
Into Customer Service I went and told the woman about the return item. She asked for the receipt, which I gave to her. She looked at me and asked, “What’s this? It’s not for our store.” I explained the article info. She said she’d never heard of anything so ridiculous and asked if I had a copy of the article (this was before the Internet, so I couldn’t look it up on the spot). I didn’t, of course, have a copy. She proceeded to give me a little lecture on not believing everything I read, and I slunk outta there glad there was no one in line behind me to get wind of my humiliation. Hahahahaha!

Sorry czar, my point was meant to be that I’m sure you’d have gotten a refund. I’ve gotten some bad things at Walmart too, and I almost always look. My son who is the trucker used to like their grocery shopping service, but he kept getting bags of vegetables that had a day or two left on expiration date, so I think he quit that. You’re out of luck when you’re a thousand miles OTR and your food is bad. Not getting your money back and there you go eating fast food again.

Wasn’t meant as anything but a comment, didn’t even see your comment re: refund. I just have such a miserable shopping time with Walmart that I gird for consumer battler every time i have to go there. There are a couple of niche local markets that haven’t been destroyed by WM and I use them whenever I can – as do a LOT of locals – but there are times…
The practice of dumping nearly expired stuff on call-in shoppers by WM seems to be a big issue on line, then again it’s a way to get rid of product that otherwise might end up in the dumpster with bleach poured on it. If you’re so busy that you can’t shop I guess the thought that you’re too busy to fight their selections figures in.

I use grocery delivery (not from Walmart). Occasionally I get something bad or not what I ordered. I always complain, and I ALWAYS get a credit for the item. Even when the item is just the wrong thing, not bad, and I use it.

I order from Walmart and they bring it out to the car. It works really well for me. I quit buying any vegies or meats from there long ago. But, I tried ordering a few vegies and have been pleasently surprised. They were very fresh. It could be that this is the store where they were trying out the delivery to the cars and they also teach the delivery people here.

WalMart, the bane of my shopping existence…Afternoon all…
Just checking in…the renovation is progressing, slowly, but it is progressing. This week saw the front of my home being upgraded with a new pour of concrete, new siding & the framework for a deck. I’m now in a ‘lull’ as I wait for the delivery of a window, and the decking materials.
Next week, hopefully, the painter will show up, the deck will be complete, the water lines will be buried beneath another foot and a half of earth and the front of my building will be done. Fingers crossed….

The good folks in NOLA government boxed in and covered most of the drainage canals in the city some years back. Right up to this summer’s flood the Sewer and Water folks have come up with a gaggle of bs excuses as to why the city flooded and have assured us that the city’s boxed-in canals are in great shape and regularly inspected. Well this week an automobile with a 2007 registration tag was found in a 3-mile long section of canal, right downtown, where we’d been heartily assured regular inspections had been performed. No punishments are in the future and we’re being promised that the inspection we were told were done will be done.
Along the same lines the eastern part of NOLA, which had a dicey rep before Katrina, still hasn’t recovered from the storm. It is largely black and a lot of pre-K black residents didn’t come back, many settled elsewhere in the city. The large stores that were there have only partially come back and large grocery stores, save a Walmart, aren’t ready to return.
The levee situation is still ‘iffy’ and many major stores just ain’t seeing the profits especially as grocery stores are working on a thin profit edge. There’s also the issue of a Walmart at basically the east and west ends of the NOLA East pocket, with them there competition is going to be tough at best. That’s led to a rise in Dollar Tree and Dollar General stores to meet the ‘immediate grocery’ needs of the East.
Many residents in the East are low income and tend to rely on others for shopping transport so they’ve complained again to the city that there aren’t enough ‘convenient’ grocery stores. The City Council, being mostly composed of folks who’ve never worked a day in their lives or, if they have, abandoned work for politics, is proposing limiting business licences for any new Dollar stores so that grocery stores looking to come in wouldn’t face competition. Of course the ideas that what they’ll do is deprive residents of easy access to ‘bread and milk’ kinds of transactions and that if grocery stores had seen possibilities before the Dollar stores they’d have come as they offer full-service shopping Dollar stores don’t doesn’t seem to have crossed their minds.
Did I mention NOLA’s city govrenment is Democratic?

Not lately, but I can kind of tell from the latest Zany Scheme. Perhaps they can look into why exactly the grocery stores don’t want to come in, but I have the sneaking suspicion that they wouldn’t like the answer they got.
LikeLiked by 1 person
It’s all profit margin and by the time you figure in losses over profits it’s a no-brainer. They’d have to stay open 24/7 and Walmart can afford the paid security while smaller stores that sell only groceries struggle to. I can remember getting off duty early in the morning and stopping by our local grocery for something and having the night manager do anything he could to delay my leaving including offering me coffee and donuts.

TMLC (Thomas More Legal Center) Uncovers Tax-Payer Funded Islamic Propaganda Forced On Teachers
A SPECIAL INVESTIGATIVE REPORT
August 22, 2019
Concerned about a two-day mandatory teacher-training seminar on Islam conducted by a Muslim consultant hired by Michigan’s Novi Community Schools District, TMLC filed a Freedom of Information Act request for documents related to the workshop.
Richard Thompson, president and chief counsel of the Law Center, commented on the results of their investigation, “We found that the teachers were subjected to two days of Islamic propaganda, where Islam was glorified, Christianity disparaged, and America bashed—all funded by Novi taxpayers.”
