    Posted this next door, had to share here too.

    MSM seems to have sorta let our Mississippiillegal raids drop except for the endless boo-hooing about their poor (but illegal) ninas y ninos. Some local papers have run the stories on how amongst those busted were many who were previously (some multiple times) arrested before for being here illegally AND some who were wearing court-ordered ankle bracelets, they’d just ignored the courts’ orders and di-di-maued out and got another job.

    This was the result of an investigation that went on over a year, the Feds have proof that the companies KNOWINGLY hired illegals and even FACILITATED their illegal hiring. I’m betting that more than a few company folks will be getting all-expense paid vacays to a Fed motel. This is too big to just slap a few wrists

      As for the poor children of the lawbreakers, deport them too. Problem solved.

        Let’s see. These businesses were fairly close to Jackson, the political center of the state. There most likely was a channel of money to Jackson from the plants. I’m waiting to see what the sentences for the businesses are.

    Good morning everyone. Hope you are off to a fantastic Tuesday. Time to get going and working and doing, for me. After my coffee that is. The little coffee shop that roasts the best beans ever flooded with the high waters in our little town about a month ago. If they can get opened back up before we leave it’ll save me my first trip back down here. I imagine my husband will never settle on coffee now.

    Since Katrina New Orleans has been on an ‘improvement’ jag. From building new tourist attractions to trying to shake that old image of the city into an adult Disney creation, it’s all about change. Thing is this takes money and, nearly 15 years later, as Congress balks at coughing up yet more money for reconstruction the City is looking inward. That means taxes and the assessor’s office has just started to ‘revalue’ NOLA property.

    Somebody just noticed that as the city’s posted these new rates the low income and elderly are getting hit heavily with tax increases of up to 100%. This is not because the city hasn’t previously upgraded assessments, it’s because the city’s decided to launch infrastructure upgrades and the pols need MONEY. Now those low income owners who were helped after Katrina to become home owners and those elderly who’ve worked all of their lives to pay for their retirement homes are right in the crosshairs.

    The city apologist team is saying that the effected should have logged onto the assessor’s site and checked their evaluations, no warnings about the new assessments but, like every other thing the city tries to get over on its residents, the excuse is to log onto some obscure city site and if you don’t well you deserve what happens to you. You are expected to block out a period of time where you crawl through the city’s IT labyrinth to see what’s planned for your personal screwing. No central point where the city posts all of its plans to roast you on a spit, that would defeat the ‘well it’s your fault for not looking’ rationalization.

    I looked at our assessment – the assessor decreased the value of our land by $9000 but increased the value of our almost 60 year old house by $9000. That’s projected to stay the same for at least the next two years…no guarantee…but I expect to see the land value creeeeeep back up to where that $9000 gets eaten up. With us it’s an irritation but with a lot of our neighbors it’s going to be a real problem.

    Ir’s almost as if the city is trying to force out the elderly and low income homeowners hoping their land and houses will be redeveloped into more tax-productive property. To do that they’ll have to fix a crumbled infrastructure that’s been ignored for decades and that will take a quick cash infusion from increased property taxes. Those who get caught in the jaws…well that’s too bad but their properties can be redeveloped and be more tax productive.

    The Old Guard was crooked..OK, so is the New Guard…but at least they were local, knew the plight of the largely low income population and didn’t try to tax them out of their properties. This new regime has set an agenda and a trap and the trap is being sprung. Those people effected by the tax increases have to download and fill out a multiple page form, fill them out justifying the challenge to the increased tax, personally submit them in four copies to the assessor’s office and do it all before August 22nd. Had it not been for a local news outlet this still wouldn’t be widely known but even with the broadcast there will still be a lot of people left in a lurch. So much for the Big Easy.

    Today as I was traveling cross town I saw an “announcement” type bumper sticker on the little car in front of me:

    “The speed of this car is monitored by GPS.”

    It didn’t appear to be a commercial or government-owned vehicle. Looked like an everyday driver.

    Since that is apparently a possible thing now – I expect it will be implemented by everything from police departments to insurance companies so they can instantly know how fast everyone is driving. Would make issuing speeding tickets easier? Or maybe they will just shut the engine off if the driver doesn’t correct the speed.

    My son bought a smart phone for me a couple of months back. First thing I did was disable the GPS. My old car (a 2006) certainly doesn’t have any embedded GPS stuff but I suppose they will be able to force it like they did catalytic converters back in the day – “You can’t register your vehicle without an active GPS tracker….”

      When I was travelling over the Fourth of July, I had to Google map my way to some of the places I went. Google Maps can now tell how fast you’re travelling. I happened to look down and see it doing this.

      I don’t have – or want – smart car, though, so they can’t turn mine off remotely.
