And the fear mongering continues.
All day the local stations have been on covering the ‘flood’ in NOLA. The rain’s being caused by blips thrown at us by the developing tropical depression sliding off of the mainland into the Gulf and the depression’s projected to be a weakish Cat 1 hurricane by the time it lands somewhere west of Grand Isle sometime Saturday. They’ve slooooowly ratcheted up their panic coverage, skillfully using buzz words, pictures of previous floods and that neat way they change their voices to a higher register, talk faster and use grand body movements.
Weather Channel got into it, for a few they were using some total-rain guesstimate graphic showing 26 to over 30m inches of rain by the time this is over. Don’t know what bodily orifice
they pulled that out of but they dumped it, finally, and went back to the more believable estimates that everyone else was using. They also, at one point, took that rise to 20-feet figure on the Mississippi I’d mentioned earlier and started telling how the levees here were only built to a 20-foot water level, levee overtopping was expected and the Corps was sandbagging levees to prevent overtopping, sort of intimating that the Corps was afraid of levee collapses.
Truth is that the levees are built to 20 in being armored but will protect to 25 feet. The surge will only last a few hours and the only overtopping would be if the wind were strong enough to cause wakes and then it would be splashover only. Yes, the Corps is sandbagging but it’s sandbagging the levee right by its headquarters on the river where the levee was left a couple of feet lower for operations, that’s why they keep sandbags there.There could be some overtopping below NOLA as there are areas where the levees are lower but it won’t hurt the levees and the only thing on the other side is marshland…in all, no big deal.
The worst thing about the storm isn’t the wind and water, it’s the smoke being blown up our southern approaches by the media.

Lots of drama coming from the weather peeps. Sounds like wannabe actors are running the show.

And be sure to sign up for their weather apps so they can be in touch immediately if anything changes (yes, there are ads on the advertisements…).
Apparently one of the college courses for meterologists is Drama 401 (senior level). Poor things, their lives are soooo boring between these weather events, and they only get attention when they can ramp something up. Czar frequently recalls when local weathercaster Margaret Orr melted down begging people to evacuate in the face of Hurricane Georges in the early 2000’s. (Note, it changed direction suddenly and went to Mobile.)

LOL! Love y’all! Wish I could have seen Miss Orr’s meltdown. That would have been priceless.

An’ da whooooole clown cars of talking heads be unloadfin’ on the Tee Vee. We have every bureaucrat from the mayor to the Under Secretary for Clogged Sewers on Wednesdays coming on in an unending display of BS-speak.
Right now a HUGE trail of dty air from the NE is flooding into Barry, displacing the convection to the SE and SW quadrants and preventing it from forming. As long as that keeps up we’re more gooder than we’d be were it not there, less time to form a storm.
So far most of the storm damage has been the result of the unending line of bureaucrats who’ve been on telling us that, despite decades of evidence to the contrary, THIS TIME they won’t drop the ball, run and hide, steal the recovery funds and take personal credit for what WE did to recover.

My friend was all shook up, afraid that it would turn and come across Central FL. SMH Don’t know where she got that idea, but I think I might have convinced her that was unlikely.

Perhaps one of her local weathercasters was speculating…. Until he retired a few years ago, one local station had a guy who often went off script from the wisdom dispensed by NOAA, to give his personal opinions of what would happen. Not that he was always wrong in his forecasts, but the powers that be must have chafed and complained more than a little.

Maybe. She has lived in FL her whole life and been through many hurricanes. She had never even considered leaving until hurricaneHarvey, I think it was. That one scared her. And, back in the 2000’s there was one going up the Gulf which wasn’t expected to go across FL and turned at Tampa and crossed FL.

When we lived in NC folks were taking masking tape and making the equivalent of a huge asterisk in their large plate windows. The theory was that if the million mile an hour winds shattered the glass that the glass shards would dutifully attach themselves to the swinging strands of masking tape and therefore not cause any damage.
🙄

They’ve got so many people scared here that we had the unusual step of having folks from various agencies responsible for the levees parade thru on the the city emergency broadcasts explaining that the levees are strong, they don’t expect any overtopping and we aren’t going to drown screaming in fear.

10) I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud
(Daffodils)
By William Wordsworth
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

Near the border of Bavaria Germany and the Czech Republic lies the Waldsassen Abbey, a Catholic nunnery that was first established in the 12th century. In 1724 the nunnery added a library built in early Rococo style meaning that it’s incredibly ornate and theatrical. Honestly how else would you expect to present a library such as this?
The books are all bound in white pig skin, and in recent history its also played host to the International Ceramics Museum, which is a hard left turn if ever there were one. The library is maintained by the nuns of the Cistercian Sisterhood.

A plethora of greatness today lovely. The books, the birdie, the leaves, so much to appreciate. Thanks for an eye opening morning.
Sometimes on the internet, especially Pinterest, I look at objects people have made from stuff and wonder why. Maybe they took a lot of time to make something that can be bought for cheaper, or maybe it is just ugly and junky looking, but lots of stuff makes me go hmmm. The leaf art though, wow, I am in awe of the talent. And these days, the eye that see such minute detail and the hands capable of producing it.

Corps has adjusted its model to show a max possible river level of 19 instead of 20 feet. That removes one of the panic talking points – though some talking heads are saying: “IT COULD STILL HAPPEN!!!!”.
Interesting that the governor gave his planned ‘I’m in charge here!” speech and the Corps gave him its downward estimate to broadcast and not the city’s mayor. I also noted that the state’s Guard Adjutant General was about as out-of-shape looking as I am now…but then again he’s a flag officer and I learned long ago that if you wanted to be sure of passing an PT test you ran right beside or just a hair ahead of a flag officer.

Our lake has a floating island. About a year ago it came from the west for the first time to in back of our house! Stayed a few days, moved more east, then somewhat north then back to the west, where it apparently likes to stay. Yesteday the winds pushed in back of our house again. We presume whatever wind diection comes over the next few days will send it off wandering again.

The storm as media event: The governor shows up in Chalmette – directly across across the Mississippi from out house on the other side. Just prior to the gov’s arrival a flatbed with pallets of sandbags arrives. The Gov arrives, gives a speech to the assembled media on how worried he is about the levee being a bit lower there than elsewhere while Guardsmen lay sandbags by the crown of the levee. Gov leaves, Guard leaves, media videos the levee and a strrip of about 50 feet of standard sandbags from the top of the levee about 4 feet down are laid – the area’s totally bare of people, just a small, one-bag-deep layer of bags. Photo-op or did the Gov just find the only 50-footish section in the levee system that needs a teeny plug?
LikeLiked by 3 people
Oh, wait! Weatherman just informed the viewing public the low area of the levee is on THE EXACT OTHER SIDE of the river, near the house we own (but do not live in). Seems they had the GOVERNOR do the photo op and the guardsmen fortify THE WRONG SIDE OF THE RIVER!!!

Must have been great to see the interior. The article does the obligatory “they’re going to push us out and raise the prices of everything” bit…like housing. It occurred to me that if a person didn’t/couldn’t take advantage when the housing market plummeted years ago to a quoted $35,000 per, worrying about prices rising now is nonsensical.

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle;
be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do you, O prince of the heavenly host,
by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan and the other evil spirits
who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.
In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.
