      You can’t take your dog to England. If you did, it would be quarantined for 6 months in a kennel before you could go to the pup-pampering places. England has no rabies, so they are very strict about animals coming and going.
      When we immigrated back here, we brought our kitty, Ruby. We had to get a special vet’s certificate to bring her with us. She had to have a rabies shot which we had to get from Germany! We also had to buy her a plane ticket. All together it cost us about $700 to bring the kitty and this was 22 years ago. She was worth it though. Sweet Ruby lived to be 17 years old.

    Good morning all! Excitement in the neighborhood this morning. Was wakened by the sound of heavy equipment, so went outside to look. The street is blocked off and they are removing at least 3 large trees in a yard. At least one of them is in the backyard where the lot is narrow and the house is 2-story. They are using a cherry picker and a huge crane to accomplish the task. I hope they don’t drop anything. The first one in the front yard was very large – the trunk is about 2 feet thick. Another in the front yard yet to go. It’s quite a feat with houses, power lines etc.

      I know the feeling. We have a huge live oak in the backyard of the NOLA house, a magnolia tree that refuses ti die and a huge pine tree. It’s not a big lot, standard mid-to-late 50s size, but they fill the yard and make hot summers a bit cooler.

      Front yard has an old crepe myrtle on one side and a Japanese magnolia we planted over 30 years ago on the other side. It’s an old neighborhood with a lot of old trees so it doesn’t look like the new ‘green desert’ developments with grass with a few bushes.

      Here we have a huge number of trees, we lost between 11 and 14 thousand in Katrina and we’re back to forest between the ones we planted and the volunteers. I can’t envision a life without trees, living in some development where the neighborhood committee decides what type and how many trees you can have and where the can/can’t be placed. We have oaks over thirty feet high we grew from acorns in NOLA that we placed where we want them, we have about forty volunteer oaks we’ve babied growing on the west and north and about 50 long leaf we personally planted where we wanted, as sprouts, between the house and the lake. They’ve become members of the family, a life without trees is unimaginable.

      Biggest problem in planting mature trees is the tap root. If the tree was cut from the ground by one of those huge ice cream cone scoops the tap root’s usually lost. There’s a chance one might grow back but it won’t be the same as the one it originally had. The tree’s then stuck with the lateral roots for support and they weren’t designed for that, wet ground and a windstorm and you’ll be picking up a tree off of your house.

      Ahhhh…trees…

        I breathed a sigh of relief when my neighbor cut down his huge 3-branch maple that was held together by chains 30 feet up. If that sucker came down in a storm it could have wiped out his house – or mine.

          Yeah, I love maples, even grew a few dozen from seed in NOLA and brought them here but none are planted within 100 feet of the house.

          During Katrina our neighbor’s maple, parent to many of ours, split and fell, took out the corner of his house.

          Limbs don’t break on the oak, matter of fact I had to trim some of the low-hanging limbs so Czarina can mow under. The oak left untrimmed goes from ground to top, increasing the availability of food for the tree by shading out competition.

          The pines’ boughs that fall just get run over by the big mowers and ground in though the pine tree in NOLA is so large that limbs don’t fall much any more.

            I am going to have to have a talk with our oaks. Every time we have a little wind, twigs and limbs end up on the ground. I am always praying I won’t get hit by one of the larger ones.

                I think they are Live Oaks. I looked up oaks, and Live Oaks are the only ones that I noticed lose their leaves when the new ones come in. I have always wondered what was going on because the ground would be covered with brown leaves and the tree would still be covered with green leaves.

                  There’s a sand oak down there too, just bought one for here, it’s in the live oak family. If the 22-horse mower can’t chew it up then there’s always the brush hog or tractor-mounted chipper, we just let the detritus rot in.

      Lots of that happened after Katrina in New Orleans. Most houses are barely 3 feet apart and have small backyards, so no machines could go back there. My friend’s backyard tree was badly damaged but mostly still standing 40′ tall, so to have it removed she had to pay for a large crane to lean over her house to stabilize the top when it was cut off, then transfer the top and each subsequent piece to the truck in the street in front of her house. Cost a fortune, and the insurance only picked up a fraction.

        My parents once hired a local man near their Northern Michigan cottage to remove a very old tree, probably more than 50′ tall. He was a Christian & would pray about each cut before making it. He climbed the trunk with spiked boots & a very basic harness & would tie off each section before cutting it strategically & lowering it to the ground. Once started he’d taken down the whole tree in less than half an hour. Those that watched said it was truly an amazing (& economical) thing to see…

          I’ve seen that done too. Back in the 1960’s, a friend’s mother had a beautiful house on a wooded lot; unfortunately with several big elms – one huge one within two feet of the corner of the house.

          The brother in law of the guy I was dating at the time worked for a tree surgeon, and that’s exactly how he and some friends took down those big trees. It’s not exactly safe for the guy climbing the tree, though.

      How about a public school teacher from New Orleans? It’s a miserably performing system in a state that scores perpetually in the lowest three states, a city that’s had untold millions thrown at its school system since Katrina and the schools still suck and are rife with corruption. There’s yet another investigation going on to find out why after millions were thrown into the charter school system the students are still failing.

      Come ‘n git one…or two, we won’t miss ’em and they’re mostly Democrats so failure is an option to them.

    The New York Times editorial board is aghast. It editorialized, “Trump’s Tariffs Are a New Tax on Americans.”

    What? Has the board finally meet a tax it did not like?

    Of course, tariffs are not new. Tariffs were the nation’s first tax. George Washington signed the first one into law on July 4, 1789, on the 66th day of his presidency.

    Tariffs provided most of the national government’s revenue until the income tax came along. American industry flourished under tariffs, which Democrats opposed. The opposition to tariffs was almost as strong as Democrat support of slavery.

    Republicans were the party of abolition and tariffs — until the Bushes came along.

    President Donald Trump wants to end unfair trade agreements. The American-in-name-only companies that benefit from cheap unAmerican labor oppose him. They finance think tanks that churn out studies that show America benefits from consuming without producing…

      The other thing about tariffs is to encourage us to buy American made. I always consider this when shopping, and pick American made if available, even if it is more expensive.

    Woo Hoo…Trump asrriving in New Orleans right now. Gonna be shutting down Interstate and main roads in the busiest part of the day in NOLA’s busiest suburb. Gonna be some folks late to dinner tonite. He has a fundraiser in Metairie tonite, $2800 a plate (originally posted as $28,000 a plate by local press) so he has to land at the international airport instead of the air station in Belle Chasse.

    DIL is having her pinning ceremony – nursing students receive their nurse’s pin after graduating college – tomorrow night, and I’ve absolutely no idea what to get her, and cash is too impersonal.
    Any suggestions?

    Was thinking of a good wine or cooler (what is a cooler???), but, not being a drinker, have no idea where to even start. My memory has only Kahlua, Bailey’s Irish Creme, and Dos Equis, from L’il Bro (of course).
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
